FMD 9-15-17: False, Etto

So I'm listening to some Mika the other day, and the I turn off that and turn on the radio and Leo Sayer's "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing" comes on, and I'm thinking "this is a lot of falsetto all at once", but I was cool with it. So for today, nominate your favorite falsetto songs.

    *Notes:
    1. A self-cover of her own, the title track of her album featuring Pharaoh Sanders. I don't know if I would know about Alice Coltrane without her having married John, but wow did she create her own unique discography. I need to get further into her music.
Just learned that she and Carlos Santana did a collab album in 1974. I'll listen to the youtube cuts after I finish this list.

    9. Track 7 on the album.

    B. "This must be the darkest town this side of the world.
One road leads to Hell, the other one goes out of this town."
After walking away from this compilation and a half, I'm drawn back by the modern cuts on 1.5. Sounds like the American West, much more than songs from the Southeast about beer, fishing, pickups, and pick-ups.

    1. One mostly-background listen to the Santana/Alice album and...
I could tell almost immediately when the song Alice wrote began... I started liking the music for about 5 minutes.
The other 4 tracks... not my CoT.

  2. I can't think of the particular songs, (or were they just bits for effect?), but I really enjoyed the Beck falsettos on Mellow Gold, Stereopathetic Soul Manure, and One Foot in the Grave.

    * There's a free browser RPG that was released this week to accompany the album titled... Japanese Breakquest. Michelle is the very best.
** It's too early for this, but this is pretty killer. Are you into her, AMR?

    1. I fixed the URL. We can't use the httpv:// anymore, but can just enter the https youtube URL.
I knew before fixing it was some Ween.

    2. I have not heard of Pharmakon before, although her previous two album covers look familiar... Pitchfork lists?
Sounds like Pan_Sonic x Black Dice x early Zola Jesus.
Oh cripes, I just heard the first Diamanda Galas wail. F--- . I can't think of many situations in which I would want to listen to this.
Well... new music for the "Halloween" Playlist. MLWT Thrill Kill Kult needed some company.
If I were like the neighbors that played spooky sound effects in their yard for trick-or-treating, but played this... I'd have kids involuntarily voiding themselves. I don't know how much more I can take right now.
      End of song 1.

      1. This got a literal "lol" from me. I was into the track that came up, and it made me want to see her live, but sheesh... yeah, not a ton of times I'm going to pull this one out.

    3. I don't remember which radio station did it, but way back in day, one of them had a show somewhere in the UHF band on Saturday nights (maybe it was Friday) that played music videos. That show basically got me into Ween as they played "Push Th' Little Daisies", "Voodoo Lady", and this video here.

      1. There was an article in the Fargo Forum when I was in the 7th grade that talked about smaller radio stations. There were two that caught my eye: KNDS at NDSU, and a nightly show broadcast from Arthur, ND called Manchester Avenue. I called into KNDS and asked if they'd play a Ween song the first time I listened to it. I was familiar with "Push th' Little Daises" because Beavis & Butt-Head, but my parents wouldn't let me buy records with the Explicit Lyrics sticker on them, so I couldn't hear more. The woman seemed kind of shocked such a young kid was calling in; she played "Voodoo Lady" and then dedicated "Tricky Kid" by Tricky to me haha. I loved "Voodoo Lady" I eventually went out and snuck home a copy of Chocolate & Cheese a few years later. I listened to it on headphones at night when I was on IRC, over and over.

I ended up listening to Manchester Avenue a lot more, though. Primarily because a friend and I would party line and call the guy all the time. We asked him to play "Hobo Humpin' Slobo Babe" every night. He was a champ and complied. He also played "Pepper" by Butthole Surfers long before it got huge on radio, and talked me into buying Independent Worm Saloon which was a pretty formational album for me.

        1. Here comes a Nazarene
          Looked good in that magazine
          Halie Selassie I
          They look after I
          God will receive us
          Got me like Jesus
          Mary Magdalene
          That'd be my first sin
          Being with this temptress

    4. Yes to Gene & Deaner!
Didn't get introduced Ween until much later(Mollusk, maybe White Pepper?), but I loved being able to step into a 'new' band, still touring & releasing albums, who also had a book of work to catch up on.

  5. How could I forget Prince's falsetto on "Beautiful Ones"?
Because I sang along with Beck but didn't even try with Prince?

Probably other good candidates from Prince, but that one stands out to me.
It was one of the songs I remember my Dad made me turn off. (Another: "Screaming Slave" Nine Inch Nails "remix" from Fixed)

  6. Vampire Weekend (Ezra Koenig).

And, on behalf of nibbish, I nominate Sigur Rós (Jónsi Birgisson).

  7. 1. The RelayThe Who
