Off-Season’s Greetings: Games of November 3

Some good pitching by Twins in the AFL.

ARIZONA FALL LEAGUE

Twins:  Sean Miller was 1-for-4.  LaMonte Wade was 1-for-4.  Ryan Eades pitched two shutout innings, giving up two hits and a walk.  Tom Hackimer pitched a perfect inning, striking out one.  Andrew Vasquez pitched a scoreless inning despite giving up two walks.

SURPRISE 4, SALT RIVER 1 IN SURPRISE

Oscar Mercado (St. Louis) had a two-run single in a three-run fifth that put Surprise up 3-1.  They added a run in the eighth on Andrew Knizner's (St. Louis) homer, his third.  Monte Harrison (Milwaukee) hit a home run for Salt River, his third.  Jon Perrin (Milwaukee) pitched three shutout innings for Salt River, giving up two hits and a walk while striking out one.

GLENDALE 7, PEORIA 2 IN PEORIA

Will Smith (Dodgers) hit a two-run double in a four-run first.  Glendale eventually built a 7-0 lead before Peoria got on the board.  Francisco Mejia (Cleveland) was 3-for-5 with a double.  Smith was 2-for-4 with a double and four RBIs.  D. J. Peters (Dodgers) hit a home run.  Brandon Waddell (Pittsburgh) pitched three shutout innings, giving up one hit and no walks while striking out two.  Lourdes Gurriel (Toronto) was 2-for-3 with a home run, his third, for Peoria.

SCOTTSDALE 3, MESA 0 IN SCOTTSDALE

Scottsdale scored single runs in the first, sixth, and eighth.  Mesa had only one hit.  Mickey Jannis struck out five in five shutout innings, giving up one hit and one walk.  Alec Mills struck out four in four innings for Mesa, giving up one run on four hits and two walks.

VENEZUELAN LEAGUE

Twins:  Yohan Pino (Aragua) pitched two innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits.  Leonardo Reginatto (Margarita) was 1-for-2 with two walks.

LA GUAIRA 14, ANZOATEGUI 4 IN LA GUAIRA

La Guaira scored four in the second and seven in the third to take an 11-1 lead.  Jose Castillo was 4-for-6 with two doubles.  Heiker Meneses was 3-for-4 with a double.  Arivcent Perez was 3-for-5 with a double.  Jose Martinez was 2-for-4 with two doubles and a walk, scoring three times.

ZULIA 8, ARAGUA 4 IN ARAGUA

Aragua led 3-0 through six, but Zulia scored three in the seventh, to tie it.  Aragua went up 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh, but Zulia scored five in the ninth to put the game out of reach.  Hector Gimenez hit a two-run homer, his second.  For Aragua, Luis Villegas was 3-for-4 with two homers, his fourth and fifth.  Guillermo Moscoso pitched six innings, giving up two runs on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

MAGALLANES 19, LARA 2 IN MAGALLANES

Magallanes scored three in the first, three in the second, one in the third, five in the fourth, three in the sixth, and four in the seventh.  Mario Lisson was 5-for-6 with two doubles, scoring three times and driving in three.  Jesus Valdez was 4-for-5 with a walk and four runs.  Ronny Cedeno was 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs.  Luis Torrens was 3-for-4 with two walks.  Raydar Ascanio was 3-for-4 with two walks and scored four times.  Samir Duenez was 1-for-3 with two walks and three RBIs.  Jenrry Mejia pitched four shutout innings, giving up two hits and five walks while striking out three.

CARACAS 3, MARGARITA 1 IN MARGARITA

Ramon Cabrera singled home a run in the fourth to break a 1-1 tie and Gregorio Petit homered in the fifth to provide an insurance run.  Wilfredo Tovar was 3-for-4.  Trayvon Robinson hit a home run.  Luke Irvine pitched 3.1 innings, giving up one run on two hits and three walks while striking out one.

MEXICAN LEAGUE

Twins:  Andy Wilkins (Culiacan) was 0-for-3 with a walk.

NAVOJOA 10, JALISCO 4 IN JALISCO

Navojoa scored two each in the third, fifth, and seventh and got four in the ninth to put an exclamation mark on it.  Randy Arozarena was 4-for-5 with a two-run homer, his third.  Jesus Castillo was 3-for-5.  Quincy Latimore was 2-for-5 with a grand slam, his second home run.  Zack Dodson pitched 7.1 innings, giving up three runs on eleven hits and no walks while striking out five.  Carlos Figueroa was 3-for-5 with a double for Jalisco.

CULIACAN 3, OBREGON 2 IN OBREGON

Obregon scored two in the eight to cut the lead to 3-2 and had men on first and third with one out, but a pair of strikeouts ended the inning and they never came as close again. D'Arby Myers was 3-for-4 with a double for Culiacan.  Daniel Rodriguez pitched 7.1 innings, giving up one run on three hits and two walks while striking out five.  For Obregon, Pablo Ortega pitched seven innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits and three walks while striking out three.

HERMOSILLO 9, MEXICALI 7 IN HERMOSILLO

Hermosillo led 9-2 through seven, with a five-run eighth getting Mexicali back into the game.  Jorge Flores was 3-for-5.  Fernando Perez hit a three-run homer, his third.  Jose Amador was 2-for-4 with a home run (his second) and a double.  Joshua Smith pitched five innings, giving up two runs on five hits and no walks while striking out two.  Daniel Castro was 3-for-4 for Mexicali.

DOMINICAN LEAGUE

Twins:  Carlos Paulino (Gigantes) was 0-for-3 with a walk.

TOROS 11, ESCOGIDO 3 IN ESCOGIDO

Carlos Franco's two-run double in the seventh put the Toros up 4-3 and they scored seven in the eighth to put the game out of reach.  Steven Moya was 3-for-3 with a home run.  Jorge Mateo was 3-for-5 with a double.  Mike Mayers struck out seven in six innings for Escogido, giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits and no walks.

LICEY 6, ESTRELLAS 3 AT ESTRELLAS

Licey scored five in the second and led all the way.  The Estrellas did not get on the board until the eighth.  Esmil Rogers pitched five shutout innings, giving up three hits and no walks while striking out three.

AGUILAS 2, GIGANTES 1 AT AGUILAS

A bases-loaded walk brought home the winning run with two out in the ninth.  Yunesky Maya pitched five innings, giving up an unearned run on five hits and no walks with two strikeouts.  For the Gigantes, Alfredo Simon pitched three shutout innings, giving up one hit and four walks while striking out two.
