  1. It sounds like a broken record... but it's another FCS title for NDSU. And actually, it just ties a record for most FCS championships with 6. This club is primed for a 7th next year with 16 starters returning.

  2. On the latest episode of Effectively Wild, Ben Lindbergh talks with Daniel Adler (hired last August by the Twins as their new Director of Baseball Operations) about his perspective on differences between football & baseball. (If you don’t remember, Adler was hired from a position with the Jacksonville Jaguars.) Joining Lindbergh & Adler on the call are Meg Rowley (the new Editor-in-Chief of The Hardball Times) and Bill Barnwell (4ltr). It’s an interesting conversation that doesn’t skirt topics like concussions & complicity, toxic work culture*, the differing perspectives on the utility of analytics, and more.

*I was pleased to hear Adler’s comments about Falvey & Levine’s guidance to front office staff & coaches (in Minnesota & the minors) regarding taking time off during the season for major life events.

    1. While Tillman’s FIP last season was almost a run lower than his frightful ERA, that’s actually the inverse of his career line (4.66 FIP vs 4.43 ERA). His two best seasons (2013 & 2014) had marked differences, with differences of -0.71 and -0.67 between FIP & ERA. Go figure — he was pitching in front of infields featuring Manny Machado, J.J. Hardy, and Brian Roberts/Johnathan Schoop. Given the eye-watering BABIP (.334) and HR/FB rate (20%) last year, I’m not sure I’d want Tillman to be taking away innings from any of the Twins’ young guys.

        1. After the Sanó ugliness broke, I did find myself wondering what it would take for the Twins to acquire Machado. I know he’s said he wants to return to shortstop (and he probably could), and I know he’d be a rental, but Machado/Polanco/Dozier/Mauer would be pretty sweet if Sanó’s out of the picture for a significant portion of the season.

  3. Is anyone else on Nextdoor?

There is some redevelopment planned near my neighborhood and following that topic and the replies has been very entertaining over the last week.

    1. I am on next door, and I, too, sometimes find some folk’s response to what I consider trivial hilarious.

      1. Me too. I'm in a new development, and the privilege and first world problems that come through can be grating. On the other hand, it has been nice for neighborhood watch stuff, recommendations for plumbers, and selling crap we don't want.

        1. My wife follows along intermittently, just to see what’s up in the hood.

Pros: she finds out about break-ins, etc. in the area and she knows what new stores are moving in.

Con: Lots of subtle (and not so subtle...) racism.

    1. LeBron James has been in basketball for just about a generation and he is only 33 years old. Still playing 37 minutes a game, and still a Top 3 player in the league.

    2. Great first half for the Wolves. I have to admit I got pumped on Jimmy Buckets' 3 at the buzzer. Now let's see them massage that lead in the second half while giving the starters some extra rest.

    1. I don’t know much about basketball, but I did recently learn the phrase “Pyrrhic Victory,” and I am going to recklessly assert that this has something to do with the Cavs playing a strategy of the really, really long game against the Timberwolves.

      1. All of the Wolves starters played more minutes than all of the Cavs starters. I feel justified in my baseless claims. If

    1. Yeah. That was sweet.
Alright, who’s going to finance my trips to Target Center for the remainder of their games?

  4. Just noticed some wet spots on my ceiling tonight, definitely weren't there yesterday. They're all along the same side of the roof, thinking an ice dam must have formed with the warm-up.

This is the first time this has happened in a house, does anyone have a company they've worked with before for removal? Wondering if it is going to solve itself over the next two days with mid-30s and sun or if there's a chance it just gets a lot worse as more of the melt gets stuck behind ice.

From an energy inspection last spring, I know the insulation levels are acceptable but on the low side. Guess it is time to improve that, add that to what is becoming a never-ending list of necessary repairs/improvements in the 2.5+ years we've owned this place.

    1. I have extensive experience with ice dams, but have not paid for professional removal of ice buildup. I have used roof rakes, heat cables/tape, salt ‘pucks’ and (a few times) ladder and shovel after heavy snowfall. All of these can damage shingles in some fashion, but the combination of snow removal, melting large sections ice buildup (and most importantly) the creation of “drainage troughs*” with the electric cables along the eaves and valleys has had good results - i.e., no ice dams in three consecutive winters. Now let me go find some wood to knock on.

*melt snow and ice down to exposed shingles, in ‘V’s’ from about 24” up the roof, down to the drip edge.
