  1. Taxes done. I'd been a little concerned I'd have to pay in now that my wife is working and we've jumped a bracket, but we got our witholdings just right so, without credits, we'd have owed like $4. So, thanks having kids!

    1. Finished our taxes on Sunday, too. Looks like paying ahead most of our 2018 charitable giving last year (because no itemizing next year) is paying for our new TV. Good plan, Mrs. Runner!

      1. Dayum!

I mostly finished FAFSA (for the last time! w00t!!!111one111!!!), then realized I did not have a copy of the girl's 2016 w-2.

  2. at the missus' behest, strolled outside just now to check out the Super Blood Moon. Pretty cool.

      1. The 4yo was excited for it last night but when it came to waking up (15 minutes!) early, that excitement disappeared. I got to watch it briefly before moonset.

I saw mention of streaming curling in yesterday’s Cup. Mrs. Hayes asked me on Sunday night if there’s a good way to watch it during the Olympics. What’s a cordcutter’s best option?

      1. The CurlingZone links go to TSN, which isn't available 'round these parts. The only way I know of to watch live is through ESPN3, but that's only available if you have someone's cable username/password.

I do know that the Curling Canada youtube channel is showing replays of the draws, so if you don't mind not watching live that's a good option.

        1. I remember finding a way around that sort of a thing in 2014. Like a VPN to Canada or something.

      1. Red & green is such a singular combination, though – it’s pretty rare in the Big 4. The Devils haven’t worn that combo in 25 seasons, and I’m trying to think if there’s another team out there that currently uses both equally.

Honestly, though, shouldn’t all Minnesota teams feature sky blue?

        1. though the combo is rare, that doesn't change that it looks pretty awful. the whole wild aesthetic (and name) have never been a big hit with me.

          cosign on the sky blue.

          1. I think ditching the gold they wore early on and going with “wheat” (cream) as the neutral color keeps the red/green combo from going off the rails, especially with green as the primary color. The red home sweaters with the roundel they had for almost a decade never looked right to me, but the new threads this year look really sharp. The green/wheat alternate sweater they had with the Minnesota script based on the old Minneapolis Millers “M” logo remains my favorite, but I thought it deemphasized the red too much. The new sweater does does a good job of bringing just enough back.

Have the Wild ever done a suspender giveaway? Because they should.

          2. I'm the opposite. I adore the Wild name, I love the logo with the wilderness, the colors work for me (even though sometimes they can be awful in combination, the actual execution tends to work really well for the Wild), etc.

        2. But its Iron Range Red and Forest Green and Minnesota Wheat , so they are not adding blue unless you make its One of Us Blue. (surprised they dint grab some of that sweet Kasota Gold the Twins push)

      1. Where do you think the Vikings got their color combination from? I'm just very glad the Twins didn't go that way as well. If I wear purple and gold or maroon and gold around here without team logos, I don't look out of place at all.

        1. Actually, no — the purple & gold were taken from the University of Washington (aka Purple UW):

It was Hubenthal -- not a Vikings employee, not a Minnesota design firm, not the NFL Properties office -- who designed the Norseman logo and the team's original uniform set, including the distinctive horned helmet. Per Rose's instruction, Hubenthal executed the designs in purple and gold. Why those colors? Because those are the colors of the University of Washington, where Rose had attended college. So with the L.A. and Washington connections, the look of this quintessentially midwestern team had strong West Coast roots.

We know all of this because Hubenthal saved his original sketches of the uniform and logo, had them framed, and hung them on his office wall for many years. On the back of the frame he inscribed a note: "I designed the [Vikings'] uniform, helmet, and trademark logo at the request of Bert Rose, the first general manager of the new franchise, and Norm Van Brocklin, their first coach. I had known them when they were with the L.A. Rams. Rose was a U. of Washington grad, hence the purple and gold colors."

          1. Perhaps, in part. The follow-up has this story as an alternate explanation:

[Ole] Haugsrud originally owned the Duluth Eskimos and later became one of the Vikings' founding owners, holding a 10 percent stake in the team. He grew up in Superior, Wisconsin, and attended Superior Central High School, where the football team was called the Vikings and wore purple and white.
