  1. Looks like we're getting new neighbors. No, really, just ½ mile away down in the industrial park flood plains.

So, you know how you have work to be done on the home, and the contractor keeps pushing back the schedule? Well, we're having hardwood floor added to the dining room and upstairs hallway, new (hardwood) stair rails, new stairs carpet (that won't show traffic as badly), and restaining/refinishing the existing hardwood floors. We contacted the bid we decided to go with, he came by the next evening and took a down payment, is dropping off wood so it can acclimatize to the house, and will begin the prep work Friday. Aaagghh, it's happening! Anyone have a place were we can camp out for a couple days?

  2. The Twins make their first roster cuts. Pitchers Dietrich Enns, Felix Jorge, Zack Littell, and Lewis Thorpe go down, along with catchers Brian Navaretto and Wynston Sawyer. No surprises there, but I also wouldn't be surprised to see one or more of the pitchers in the majors at some point this season.

        1. Speaking of Ervin, I was recently notified that he followed McAuley Culkin on Twitter. I don't know what this means.

  3. Sour Cream told me last night that one of her friends isn’t allowed to watch Bob’s Burgers, but watches both 9-1-1 and The Bachelor with her parents. I don’t get people sometimes.

    1. I'm not in 100% agreement with you on language but it is ridiculous how ratings (and parents) treat language vs. violence.

I watched the edited version of Forrest Gump with the kids. Edited out a$$ but showed a guy with a gut shot on the battle field.

      1. In eighth grade history we watched Glory. The school had gone to the trouble of seeking out the clean version for class. About two minutes into the movie, a dude’s head explodes graphically and one girl was so traumatized she went home. But hey, Denzel didn’t say “shit” at least!

    2. Sometimes it's weird values. Sometimes it's the parent's mood at the time.

I was allowed to watch The Shining when I was six, and Basic Instinct when I was 11. But when I was 12 my parents wouldn't let me see Naked Gun 2 1/2. There wasn't a lot of consistency and I think it was just based on how they felt about what they heard other people say about the movie at the time.

      1. Were your parents watching Naked Gun 2 1/2? A lot of times what kids are allowed to see that maybe is questionable is based purely on what the parents want to see and aren't willing to wait until the kids aren't around.

        1. They were not. But they were watching the other two. So you may be onto something there.

  4. Dennis Lin of The Athletic's Padres coverage wrote about thoracic outlet surgery (paywalled). Seems like it could be the "new" Tommy John.

Thoracic outlet syndrome is a silent disrupter of careers, affecting the passageway from the lower neck to the armpit—critical real estate for anyone who hurls baseballs for a living. Even with the latest medical advancements, early detection has proven elusive.

“It’s kind of a diagnosis you’ve got to get through exclusion,” Ross said. “You’ve just got to check off all the boxes. Like, it’s not this, it’s not that. It’s not A, B, C, D or E.”

I wonder how many pitchers had unsolved pain in their shoulder that was actually from this. Like Tommy John, it seems that pitchers are able to return to their previous form once rehab finishes.

Last February, Thompson published a study of TOS in established major league pitchers. At the time, 13 were to known to have undergone corrective surgery since 2001. Ten achieved a sustained return to the majors. Overall, there was little difference in pre- and post-operation statistics.

        1. He had a blood clot, similar to what happened to Carter Capps. No mention of thoracic. Twins were ahead of the trend though!

          1. If blood flow was hindered, that could increase the chances for blood clots, I would think. I'm no doctor, but to me it sounds like basically the same problem with just different symptoms.

            1. I meant no mention of procedure (back) then, in 2013. To me, it's clearly the same procedure.

      1. It should be noted that ch was able to work Pelfrey into a curling discussion this weekend.

  5. There is much rejoicing in the SBG family today. My niece got accepted into medical school. w00t!

    1. Congratulations! I mean, too bad about the SDSU part, but other than that, awesome!

      1. IKR! My brother lives in Brookings, so she stayed in her hometown and went to that loser school (ha!). She's going to go to your alma mater, though, for med school.

  6. Late night poll: Do you add ice cube to your orange juice?

Until tonight, I didnt now that this is a "weird" thing. I've been doing this all my life.

    1. I don't, but then I'm not a big fan of ice water or ice in soda pop, either. If you like it, I don't see anything wrong with it.

    1. Clearly the first picture is before he could afford tailored suits and had to borrow clothes from that guy walking with him.

      1. I can't believe how many XL shirts my parents bought for me in high school despite how ridiculous they must have looked. My favorite one (that might be in my house in a box somewhere) is from the 1997 Final Four in Indy, it proves Minnesota was there!!!

      1. They clobbered Hutchinson tonight. Play West for Sectional Championship on Sat at Gustavus. Without Austin and Owatonna in their Region, they have a good chance to make State.

I've really enjoyed watching this young man's progress. He should make some noise next year as a junior.

        1. /Checks record ("Hutchinson: 2-27 Overall, 0-10 Conference") thinks back to high school days, remembers nothing about the boys basketball team, only girls (Whalen).../
          Seems not much has changed.
Bootsy - what relation to Joe (if any)?

          1. East coach Joe is my younger brother. (That was the Joe in question, right?)

And dude, things have really changed. These kids are just so much better than the varsity HS BB I played back in 78-80. It's a different game.

            1. That was the one in question. Very cool.
Re: ‘different game ‘, I begin to see that. I loved to ball, but 5’5” as a sophomore and a trash shot were my undoing. I couldn’t sniff the B Squad in one of these schools.

    1. We had just one guy who could dunk in our small school, and the ladies flocked to him. So, congratulations in advance to the nephew.

      1. Right? Apparently he jumps better off two. Odd.

It does lend itself to a higher possibly of in-game dunks, however.
