December 19, 2018: Make List, Check Twice

I really should make a list as I have so much crap to take care of in the next few days. I'd be easier if the last three or so weeks hadn't all been at the same pace.

        1. sounds like you are not a big fan of McAfee, sean. What are your recommendations for desktop (and mobile) security?

(disclaimer: I use the free versions of AVG on both, but not because I have any credible or meaningful insight)

          1. My opinion is based on what browser makers say. The short version is all AV is terrible because the browsers have to deliberately limit what they can do for security to not break AV. My opinion is to use Windows Defender. That is of limited help when the IT department forces a particular AV choice on you, but personally*, I wouldn't use anything but Windows Defender.

            * Caveat: I don't use Windows (or Mac).

              1. I forgot to add on to what I said originally. In order to scan for malware, AV has to reach deep into the OS to inspect everything before it's loaded. This of course will slow down your computer even when done well. And they do it poorly. It's common to see security problems directly from the code that is injected. Areas where browsers have multiple levels of protection suddenly reduced to nothing. Windows Defender isn't an exception to this, but it's the best of bad choices and improving.

                  1. Get an iPhone. The number one thing you can do is keep software updated. iPhones are easy for that plus they have excellent security. Android phones are extremely bad about this, unless you get a Google-branded phone. Anything else is you taking risks. Most Android phones don't get any updates whatsoever or possibly a few token updates and that's it. You could pay me to use them, but it would be a high enough price that I could buy many Pixel phones.

iPhones are Mike Trout. The Pixel phones are Mookie Betts. Some very strong points but not the same history of security.

  1. I know it’s a bit forbidden but can we talk about why anyone other than Tim’s mom would buy and display his signed helmet?

So many jokes, so little time.
