2019 Game 94: New York Mets at Minnesota Twins

Jason Vargas
vs
Martín Pérez

Day game after a clunker last night. This is the final game against the Mets. The Twins split the series in New York so need to win today to salvage a .500 record against a bad team.

    1. For reals: why does Garver keep calling for 0-2 curveballs within the strike zone? May is throwing to the target; maybe they should explore trying to get the batter to chase

      1. Maybe he's sandbagging in that area to give himself something to improve on for next year?

      2. How do you set up a target in the dirt? There are times when catchers will gesture to emphasize put it in the dirt, but I don't think Garver should have to do that in that situation. May has to know not to leave it in the zone, especially up as high as it was.

    1. I think they need one of those meetings where everyone yells at each other then they come out and win, like, 12 in a row. Or whatever.

      1. To some degree, I had a feeling that the team was headed for an actual, honest-to-god slump. How quickly and how decisively they're able to pull out of it will tell us a lot about them.

Also, good heavens, but Buxton (all the team, really, but ESPECIALLY Buxton) needs to get healthy.

          1. Buxton plays: 52-23
            Buxton does not play: 6-12

(in fairness, four of those "Buxton Plays" wins were games in which Buxton did not start)

              1. Sure.

On the one hand, that's a huge variance. On the other hand, he's been hurt during a part of the year where a lot of the rest of the team has been lagging in one way or the other.

Still, if you look at his last fifteen games, they've gone 10-5. In that same period (since June 9th), the team has gone 6-9 in games where he hasn't played.

Long story short, they really need Buxton on the field and healthy.

      2. On the postgame show, Attaboy and Dazzle were talking about how there's no need to panic. I agree with that, but I do think there needs to be some sense of urgency, a sense that the way the team has been playing is not acceptable and that something needs to change. I don't think they need to panic, but they shouldn't put their heads in the sand and pretend all is well when it clearly isn't.

  1. 🎵🎶MEET THE METS,

where did they go? To MEET THE METS!
Oh, they're hollerin' and cheerin' and they're jumpin' in their seats,
where did they go? To MEET THE METS!
All the fans are true to the orange and blue,
so hurry up and come on down -
'cause we've got ourselves a ball club,
The Mets of New York town!

    Give 'em a hand!
And let 'em know your rootin' in the stand!🎶🎵

  2. Looks like I didn't miss much today. Got here just in time to hear Adrianza make his pitching debut. I see we made our now-standard two errors again today. What happened to that great defensive team we had at the start of the season?

  3. Dropping these two games to this Mets team might look even worse in September than it does now. This was an opportunity to maintain or extend the lead over Cleveland, pushing their deadline strategy into Sell mode. With the Athletics and Yankees coming to town, the next weak opponent the Twins face will be the White Sox on 25–28 July. As it is, if I’m Mark Shapiro, I’d be thinking I might as well simply try to shoot the moon one last time and get a rental bat and some pitching depth in case Carrasco doesn’t return.

The timing of this tailspin isn’t catastrophic, but it’s way, way less than ideal.

  4. My kids are willing to take the blame for this one. When I was sitting in the stands, the Twins outscored the Mets 3-1 (and I missed the error that led to the one Met run). When I was taking kids to the bathroom/getting food for kids/leaving early because of kids' dance class the Twins were outscored 13-1. But hey, I only got to see the good Twins today, so that was nice.

      1. Honestly, the worst part was parking (all ramps full. Including a few not advertising that fact.). The kids had a blast. Dollar dogs helped too.
