I got a nice check yesterday for a freelance gig I picked up recently, so last night we watched the first three episodes of Sex Education, Season 2 and sipped way too much Jameson whiskey (neat, with beer chaser). It was fun, but today my brain feels too big for my skull.
drunker than a poet on payday.
Pro bowl may be lame, but the skills competition can evidently be fun. And what do you know, NFL wide receivers have the same skill set it takes to be really good at dodgeball.
NHL all-star game in StL, and the skills compo looks pretty cool. Plus spotlighting the women, too
Reports saying Kobe died in a helicopter crash.
My brother just texted me about this. Kobe was younger than I am. Has any athlete bigger in his sport died this young since Dale Earnhardt?
I don't think so? A few years before Dale was Payne Stewart, though he wasn't quite as iconic.
Washington pro football player Sean Taylor comes to mind.
Junior Seau. Steve McNair, too.
Darryl Kile also comes to mind, but of course he was not anywhere near as big in his sport as Kobe Bryant.
A couple of others would be Roy Halladay and Cory Lidle.
Thurman Munson. Len Bias
If we're going back that far, then of course Roberto Clemente.
If we want to go really far back, then Lou Gehrig, who was younger than Kobe when he died. Of course, Gehrig's passing wasn't as sudden and unexpected.
Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, J.P. Richardson
Halladay came to mind for me. Not quite Kobe level but still Hall of Fame player, recent retiree that died in a crash of a plane that he was piloting. Kobe wasn't the pilot, but it sounds like he owned the plane.
Jose Fernandez was another one. He was still playing and was a young star on the rise and died in a crash of a boat he was piloting.
Pat Tillman anyone?
Oh god. The other four victims are his four daughters.
My brother saw this on ABC News but I haven’t seen it anywhere.
I think Kobe only has three daughters.
Fourth daughter was born in June 2019.
That would be truly awful.
ABC retracted that, but TMZ is now reporting his 13-year old daughter was one of the victims. No word on the others.
Wow.
Also killed in the crash was Orange Coast College baseball coach John Altobelli. The reports I've seen don't say that he's related to former Rochester Red Wings manager Joe Altobelli, so I assume he's not, but I don't actually know.

It’s Royal Rumble day, Joe. Get that Pro Bowl crap out of here!
Gophers basketball on the FOX mothership right now. Good time to check out Daniel Oturu.
Work on your free throw shooting, son.
