April 27, 2020: Grizzly

Both today's video and a recent BoF anniversary reminder made me remember I used to have some mean side chops. Don't have the same look currently, but I am going for the full 'Rona beard (for now). Admittedly, this site skews male, so I'll ask: What kind of facial hair are you maintaining/aspiring to?

  1. For the first time ever (not counting that one no-shave November experiment) I'm trying for facial hair. I do not have the ability to do anything other than a goatee, so that's what I'm going for. I don't love it, but I don't hate it. I guess you could say... it's growing on me!

/ No need to give me the negative dollar. I'll show myself out.

    1. I had a friend tell me years ago that the trick to growing a beard is shaping it based on where it grows well and where it doesn't. Who knows -- someday you could be mistaken for DPWY!

    2. I realized last night after the call that the game I was describing where the Twins hit a home run in each of the first seven innings was a game that you also attended and where we had a brief meeting in the concourse!

      1. I missed the part of the hangout where that was discussed - would that I had been there, we might have made the connection. That was a fun game.

    1. During the 2018 playoffs, he was reversed in three of four video reviews when he worked first base in Game 3 between Boston and the New York Yankees.

      I mean...

  2. I haven't been clean-shaven since my brother's wedding summer of 2015. TLO has never seen me without a beard.

I keep the cheeks and chins clean, but otherwise I prefer to just let it go for the Crazed Woodsman look. TPR prefers it shorter and neater, so I eventually acquiesce since she's the one who's gotta look at it. If not for her intervention, it'd probably be between my Adam's Apple and collarbone in length.

    1. I let mine go for about 3 weeks until Mrs Lysistrata S laid down the law. Back to shaving periodically.

    2. I haven’t been clean-shaven since October 31, 2006, and quit wearing a short beard around 2013. I suspect I’d have to average more than six hours of sleep a night* to get it to grow substantially longer, along with reducing my stress significantly, so I don’t think I’m going to reach the Billy Gibbons stage at this rate. The main change I get to observe now is the accelerating spread of white.

      * I haven’t been above 5:45 per night since mid-2017.

  3. Not a complaint, since I adore the work that is done with the daily images, just a genuine question: is there a coffee connection that I'm unaware of for today's COC image?

    1. The image has "hpstr" in its file name, so I assume it that they drink coffee with facial hair.

  4. I keep thinking about jokes I could potentially make in response to the CoC and every time end up deciding it's best not to.

    1. Can't decide if the right response to this is:
      a) I mean, it's the thought that counts. Thanks for trying!
      or
      b) Man, if I had a nickel for every time I've had that thought!
      or
      c) I sympathize. My spouse won't let me grow a beard, either!

  5. Pepper, we had the King Arthur pizza for supper on Saturday night. Mrs. Hayes & the Poissonnière made the dough on Friday, and I handled the dimpling/rising/baking (with an assembly assist from the Poissonnière). It was so good that I realized I need a better pizza sauce to do it justice! Thank you for sharing it here.

    1. Nice! I'm going to make it again in another couple of days (still have lots of leftover sauce and cheese) and am thinking I'll try using about 1/3 white whole wheat flour for the crust.

      1. Oooh, let us know how it goes. We have some KA whole wheat here, and I don’t think there would be any arguments about revisiting the pie to tweak the sauce component.

    2. Funny, we always buy the King Arthur flour, until recently when for some reason people have gone primitive/native. NBBW bought almond flour.

      1. Costco had King Arthur AP on Saturday, but no bread flour. Supermarkets around here have had very constrained supplies of bread flour the last few weeks; I snagged a five pound sack of Gold Medal and felt lucky.

With bakeries closed, I sure would like to know what the deal is; supply can’t have jumped that much, can it?

  6. Another successful virtual meet up last night, although the dude in the basement (AKA the World Headquarters) talks too much. And what's with the hats.

In a sense these meet ups are like the epitome of what I envisioned in the first place: a website as a virtual bar where the citizens could assemble and chat about all things of interest. Except no typing (well, there is to look up box scores).

    1. I think I'm going to make "last call" 10PM. We're pretty good about wrapping up when things run down, but we've gone past 10 a couple times now (including last night) and 6AM arrives much too soon.

Is 7:30 PM an okay start time? I tried to make it post-supper for Central and pre-supper for West Coast, although I know there is no optimal time what with youngun's bedtimes etc.

      1. If you ever do a one-time gathering starting at 9pm or so, I'd likely be able to drop by.

            1. I didn't know ya'll have been running that long. I may try to join in the later parts one of these weeks, then, if I can get dinner done a bit early.

      2. 10am to 6pm sounds magical. Amirite, working/homeschooling parents of multiple school-aged feisty-type children? Sleeping adequately is on my bucket list. Someday...

      1. Heehee!

Wish I knew how to embed a GIF. I used to be semi-web-literate. Guess I’ve lost more than a step.

  7. The little ghost and I picked a 2019 game at random, so now we're watching Fiers v. Gibson in Oakland (7/3).

Twins have one hit through 5. Gibson is nibbling. It's just nice to watch baseball.

    1. First time I read that I thought you were predicting "undead." Zombie dictators, here we come!

I'm morbidly fascinated by this turn of events. If there has been a similar situation with a major dead/not dead world leader in my lifetime, I certainly don't remember it.

      1. Heh, I totally read it as undead as well. I think today's poll needs a third option...

      2. But haven't we done this before with the Kims? I feel like we have and so I'm not anticipating anything major to be happening.
He's probably riding his snowpiercer train around the country until all the Covid blows over.

        1. He's probably not sipping Café Vienna in the dining car. Japanese whiskey. Neat.
