Minor Details: Games of May 29

The Saints hold on in the ninth.  The Wind Surge comes back in the ninth.  The Kernels get two hits in fourteen innings.  The Mighty Mussels lose by a run.

ST. PAUL 6, IOWA 5 IN ST. PAUL

Ben Rortvedt's two-run homer in the fourth gave the Saints a 3-2 lead.  They led 6-2 going to the bottom of the ninth, then held on as the Cubs scored three on four walks and a single.

Batting stars:  Damek Tomscha was 4-for-4 with two home runs (his second and third) and a double.  J. T. Riddle was 2-for-4.  Drew Maggi was 2-for-5 with a triple

Pitching stars:  Robinson Leyer struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.  Danny Coulombe struck out four in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.  Tom Hackimer pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Abiatal Avelino was 3-for-5.  Andrew Romine was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk.  Taylor Gushue was 2-for-5 with three RBIs.

Starter:  Chandler Shepherd struck out three in three innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on seven hits.

Good stats:  None.

Bad stats:  Mark Contreras was 0-for-4 and is batting .125.  Keon Broxton was 0-for-4 and is batting .169.  Shepherd has an ERA of 5.06.  Derek Law did not give up a run in two-thirds of an inning and has an ERA of 7.20.  Hackimer lowered his ERA to 16.20.

Record:  The Saints are 12-11, in second place in the AAA East-Midwest, 3.5 games behind Omaha.

WICHITA 10, SPRINGFIELD 9 IN WICHITA

The Wind Surge led 7-0 through four but trailed 9-7 going to the bottom of the ninth.  Jose Miranda hit a two-run homer to tie it and Gilberto Celestino hit a walkoff homer.

Batting stars:  B. J. Boyd was 4-for-4 with two doubles, three runs, and three RBIs.  Miranda was 2-for-5 with a home run (his sixth) and four RBIs.  Celestino was 1-for-5 with a home run, his second.

Pitching star:  Josh Winder struck out seven in five innings, giving up two runs on two hits and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Alec Burleson was 3-for-5 with a home run (his third) and three RBIs.  Justin Toerner was 2-for-4.  Nolan Gorman was 2-for-5.

Good stats:  Boyd played his first game of the season and is batting 1.000.  Aaron Whitefield was 1-for-3 and is batting .317.  Miranda is batting .311.  Jermaine Palacios was 0-for-2 and is batting .302.  Brandon Koch gave up a run in 1.2 innings and has an ERA of 1.35.  Winder has an ERA of 1.48.  Yennier Cano gave up three unearned runs in two innings and has an ERA of 1.50.

Bad stats:  David Banuelos was 0-for-2 and is batting .088.  Sherman Johnson was 0-for-1 and is batting .115.  Calvin Faucher allowed three runs in a third of an inning an has an ERA of 10.00

Record:  The Wind Surge is 13-10, tied for first with Tulsa in the AA Central-North.

WISCONSIN 8, CEDAR RAPIDS 1 IN CEDAR RAPIDS (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

The Kernels were no-hit.  Their run scored on a walk, a stolen base, and two ground outs.

Batting stars:  None.

Pitching star:  Zach Featherstone struck out two in 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up a hit and two walks.

Opposition stars:  Freisis Adams pitched five no-hit innings, giving up a run on three walks and striking out one.  Korry Howell was 2-for-3 with a walk and three RBIs.  David Hamilton was 2-for-4 with a triple, two runs, and four RBIs.

Starter:  Andrew Cabezas struck out six in 4.2 innings but allowed three runs on five hits and three walks.

Good stats:  Daniel Ozoria was 0-for-2 and is batting .400.

Bad stats:  Max Smith was 0-for-2 and is batting zero.  Chris Williams was 0-for-3 and is batting .080.  Wander Javier was 0-for-3 and is batting .187.  Featherstone lowered his ERA to 5.40.  Derek Molina allowed five runs in an inning and has an ERA of 6.00.

WISCONSIN 6, CEDAR RAPIDS 1 IN CEDAR RAPIDS (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

The Kernels did not get a hit in this game until the sixth.  Their lone run scored on a Trey Cabbage homer in the seventh.

Batting star:  Cabbage was 1-for-3 with a home run, his third.

Pitching stars:  None.

Opposition stars:  Cristian Sierra pitched four hitless innings, giving up two walks and striking out three.  David Hamilton was 2-for-4 with a double.  Carlos Rodriguez was 2-for-4.

Starter:  Jon Olsen struck out five in 3.2 innings, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks.

Good stats:  Daniel Ozoria retired the only man he faced and has an ERA of zero.  Unfortunately, he's a shortstop.

Bad stats:  Wander Javier was 0-for-3 and is batting .179.  Leobaldo Cabrera was 0-for-2 and is batting .190.  Michael Helman was 0-for-3 and is batting .190.

Record:  The Kernels are 9-14, tied for fifth (last) in the High-A Central-West, 6.5 games behind Quad Cities.

LAKELAND 2, FORT MYERS 1 IN LAKELAND

Andrew Navigato hit a two-run double in the fourth, and that was all the Flying Tigers needed.

Batting star:  Yunior Severino was 1-for-2 with a double and a walk.

Pitching stars:  Casey Legumina struck out four in four innings, giving up two runs on seven hits and a walk.  Peter Mooney struck out six in three shutout innings, giving up one hit.  Matthew Swain pitched a perfect inning and struck out one.

Opposition stars:  Andrew Navigato was 3-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs.  Cooper Johnson was 2-for-4.  Carlos Guzman pitched 5.2 innings, giving up one run on two hits and three walks and striking out five.

Good stats:  Kyle Schmidt was 0-for-2 and is batting .347.  Edouard Julien was 0-for-4 and is batting .307.  Mooney has an ERA of 1.17.

Bad stats:  Justin Washington was 1-for-4 and is batting .133.  Aaron Sabato was 0-for-4 and is batting .138.  Willie Joe Garry, Jr. was 1-for-4 and is batting .174.  Charles Mack was 0-for-3 and is batting .178.  Legumina has an ERA of 5.02.  Swain has an ERA of 9.26.

Record:  The Mighty Mussels are 11-13, tied for fourth in the Low-A Southeast-West, six games behind Tampa.

    Rough game to watch. I hope it wasn't a split doubleheader so the home fans from the first game got to eventually witness a hit.
