Minor Details: Games of July 2

Josh Winder is in impressive in his AAA debut.  A grand slam stops the Wind Surge.  One big inning pops the Kernels.  Fort Myers muscles up for a sweep.

ST. PAUL 7, OMAHA 3 IN ST. PAUL

The Saints scored four in the second to take a 5-0 lead.

Batting stars:  Drew Maggi was 3-for-4 with a home run (his fourth), two doubles, and two RBIs.  Jimmy Kerrigan was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs.  Jose Miranda was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.  Keon Broxton, spurred on by comments made in Minor Details yesterday, was 2-for-4 with a home run (his second), two runs, and three RBIs.

Pitching stars:  Josh Winder struck out eight in 5.2 innings, giving up one run on one hit and two walks in his AAA debut.  Yennier Cano struck out three in 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit.  Andrew Vasquez pitched a perfect inning and struck out one.

Opposition stars:  Erick Mejia was 2-for-4.  Gabriel Cancel was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer (his thirteenth) and a walk.

Good stats:  Miranda is batting .474.  Winder has an ERA of 1.59.

Bad stats:  Broxton is batting .158.  Robinson Leyer allowed two runs (one earned) in one inning and has an ERA of 6.00.

Record:  The Saints are 24-27, tied for fourth with Columbus in the AAA East/Midwest, nine games behind Omaha.

AMARILLO 9, WICHITA 5 IN AMARILLO

Leading 2-1, the Sod Poodles scored seven in the seventh to put the game out of reach.  Mikey Reynolds hit a grand slam in the inning.  The Wind Surge scored four in the ninth to make the final score look better.

Batting stars:  Leobaldo Cabrera was 1-for-3 with a home run and a walk.  Trey Cabbage was 1-for-4 with a three-run homer.

Pitching stars:  Chris Vallimont struck out six in 3.1 innings, giving up one run on three hits with five walks.  Jordan Milbrath pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up three hits.

Opposition stars:  Stone Garrett was 2-for-5 with a home run, his eleventh.  Reynolds was 1-for-2 with a grand slam (his fourth homer) and two walks.  Tommy Henry pitched 4.2 innings, giving up one run on three hits and five walks and striking out four.

Good stats:  Chris Williams was 1-for-3 and is batting .300.

Bad stats:  Calvin Faucher allowed two runs in 2.2 innings and has an ERA of 7.99.  Adam Lau surrendered six runs in two-thirds of an inning and has an ERA of 13.50.  Milbrath has an ERA of 13.50.

Record:  The Wind Surge is 30-22, in first place in the AA Central/North, a half game ahead of Tulsa.

QUAD CITIES 3, CEDAR RAPIDS 1 IN QUAD CITIES

All the runs were scored in the fourth inning.

Batting stars:  Alex Isola was 2-for-3 with a home run (his sixth), a double, and a walk.  Max Smith was 2-for-4.

Pitching stars:  Tyler Beck pitched 4.2 innings, giving up three runs (one earned) on four hits and a walk and striking out three.  Erik Manoah, Jr. pitched two shutout innings, giving up two hits in his Cedar Rapids debut.  Zach Featherstone struck out three in 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up a walk.

Opposition stars:  A. J. Block struck out seven in 5.1 innings, giving up one run on three hits and no walks.  Peyton Grey struck out four in 2.2 scoreless innings, giving up one hit and two walks.

Good stats:  Manoah, Jr. has an ERA of zero.  Featherstone has an ERA of 1.57.  Beck has an ERA of 2.20.

Bad stats:  Kyle Schmidt was 0-for-2 in his high-A debut and is batting zero.  Edouard Julien was 0-for-3 and is batting .143.  Michael Helman was 0-for-3 and is batting .190.  Jair Camargo was 0-for-1 and is batting .198.

Record:  The Kernels are 27-25, in second place in the High-A Central/West, eight games behind Quad Cities.

FORT MYERS 7, BRADENTON 4 IN FORT MYERS (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

Yunior Severino hit a three-run homer in a four-run second to give the Mighty Mussels a 6-0 lead.

Batting stars:  Severino was 1-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs.  Misael Urbina was 1-for-1 with two walks.

Pitching stars:  Zarion Sharpe pitched 3.2 innings, giving up two unearned runs on two hits and two walks and striking out three.  Matthew Swain pitched two shutout innings, giving up two hits.

Opposition stars:  Daniel Lopez was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.  Jase Bowen was 2-for-3.  Eddy Yean struck out four in four innings of relief, giving up one run on one hit and two walks.

Good stats:  Juan Pichardo allowed two runs in 1.1 innings and has an ERA of 2.96.

Bad stats:  Will Holland was 0-for-3 and is batting .161.  Willie Joe Garry, Jr. was 0-for-3 and is batting .168.  Charles Mack was 0-for-3 and is batting .180.  Aaron Sabato was 1-for-2 and is batting .192.  Urbina is batting .196.  Justin Washington was 1-for-3 and is batting .197.  Sharpe has an ERA of 5.29.

FORT MYERS 5, BRADENTON 4 IN FORT MYERS (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

Jeferson Morales singled home the deciding run in the seventh.

Batting stars:  Morales was 2-for-4 with a double.  Will Holland was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer, his third.

Pitching star:  Sawyer Gipson-Long struck out nine in six innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits and no walks.

Opposition stars:  Yoyner Fajardo was 2-for-3.  Endy Rodriguez was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer, his seventh.  Sergio Urmana pitched 3.1 innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits and striking out one.

Good stats:  None.

Bad stats:  Nick Anderson was 1-for-2 and is batting .125.  Holland is batting .169.  Wander Valdez was 0-for-3 and is batting .171.  Willie Joe Garry, Jr. was 1-for-1 and is batting .174.  Aaron Sabato was 0-for-3 and is batting .188.  Justin Washington was 0-for-3 and is batting .189,  Misael Urbina was 0-for-2 and is batting .194.  Bradley Hanner allowed two runs in one inning and has an ERA of 7.40.

    1. He has a South Dakota connection, too, as he went to Augustana in Sioux Falls. Unfortunately, his track record is not particularly promising.
