Let's have some fun this week, shall we? I'm coming off of a week of PTO spent at the kids' big dance shindig in Chicago, so I'm playing songs that get us grooving and moving, or feeling, or are just plain fun. I have a couple links to dances done by the kids' studio so I'll add some of those just to show the fun and phenomenal stuff they can do. Helping the little one practice at home, we always needed some warmup music. Mr. Blue Sky is a go-to for grooving in the basement. Enjoy!

Some of my most favorite things in a song: Jeff Lynne, and "Mr. Blue Sky"
Agreed. I’d be thrilled to see Jeff Lynne & ELO live.
One thing I love about this performance is Tandy singing “Please turn me over…” at the end. I don’t know precisely what this artifact would be called, but it’s amusing that something intended to signal the end of side three of the double LP is preserved in a live performance.
It's part of the "Concerto for a Rainy Day" suite with other Out of the Blue tracks ("Summer and Lightning", etc)
The Poissonnière & I just danced to this yesterday morning. I put Out of the Blue on the stereo while we cleaned up the living room. (“Jungle” was another excellent dance number.) Trying to transfer the ELO love to the next generation.
Anyone digging “Mr. Blue Sky” will definitely enjoy the Strong Songs podcast episode on the tune’s composition, performance, & production. I know what I’m re-listening to today.
The Scottish band Delgados did a swell cover of this on The Beeb’s John Peel Show. In fact, when the BBC did a radio special on the man after the legendary DJ’s death, they closed the broadcast with this cover.
I won't bore you with my curmudgeonly takes on why I gave this a 7 but needless to say I would have given the Delgados nine stars.
