Trade Season!

With the trading deadline this coming Friday at 3:00p local time the Twins front office has finally seen the light and all indications are that they are open for business. Berrios? Buxton? Mitch Garver? Josh Donaldson? And those are just the high profile names. The possibilities are endless.

Put your trade predictions in the Spoilers (the half baked the better) and let's check again next week on who should be the next MLB Insider at ESPN.

    1. I wonder to what degree the looming CBA is on minds in the Twins' front office. If they hold onto Berríos, Buxton, & Rogers (uffda, what injury timing) and try to contend in 2022 (or even trade in the off-season), they run the risk of losing nearly all value that's close to MLB-ready if there's a lockout. Sure, they might get compensation draft picks if the players reject tendered qualifying offers and sign elsewhere for more than $50 million...if the QO system still exists in 2022. Assuming they intend to maximize the serf years of Arráez, Kirilloff, Larnach, & the prospects behind them, trading Berríos, Buxton, & Rogers now would give them control over the type of return (pre-arb MLBers & high-level prospects), and a guaranteed degree of influence over the exact players.

        1. First Padres and now Dodgers expected to trade for Scherzer. This is feeling a bit like rabbit/duck season.

Padres one-upped and feeling desperate for a trade can only go well for the Twins.

          1. Preller will be desperate to bolster the Padres' rotation, which hasn't looked great over the last month. And Falvey & Levine can use interest from the AL East teams to increase leverage over the Padres & all three of those teams simultaneously.

  6. The upside to falling well short of preseason expectations is you have some actually good players to deal.

    1. I’m fine with any of those except the obvious. There was some talk about whether the Twins would be willing to take a pitcher — Dustin May or Adrián Morejón — who is currently recovering from Tommy John. Sounds like multiple players would be coming back; I’m hoping they acquire at least one pitcher and position player in some arrangement of pre-arb serf & high-minors prospect.

      1. I’d prefer to not see Jose pitch in pinstripes but it would be fun to watch the players the get in return destroy the Yankees in the future.

  7. Former Twin JT Chargois headed to Tampa.

  8. Gleeman saying Berrios, Pineda, probably Garver likely to be traded. Donaldson not so much. Apparently could be a pretty decent haul for Berrios.

        1. I'd be pretty surprised if they moved Garver. He's with the team until 2024, and he's been the third best hitting catcher in baseball this year.

      1. I saw some Garver talk last week, but it was in a" just throwing names out there and they might fetch something decent" way

    1. Ack! Garver=Kepler. Half-baked, got caught up in the common -er ending of last name.

      1. Bleacher Report:

Martin and Woods Richardson were two of Toronto's best prospects, and they rank at No. 16 and No. 68, respectively, in MLB.com's top 100. Martin has been especially impressive this year after going No. 5 overall in the 2020 draft, posting a .424 OBP at Double-A.

Though it isn't guaranteed that either Martin or Woods Richardson will be seen in the Twin Cities this year, Twins fans should expect to see plenty of them in 2022. Hopefully, they'll help the team recover from its lost 2021 season.

    1. Reading last night about how the Twins were being blown away by offers, this certainly seems to check out. Notwitstanding Lewis' injury, these might now be the 2 best prospects in the Twins' system. (FWIW, all my analysis today is based on text thread I've got going with Matt Trueblood - who hated the idea of trading Berrios but reveresed course upon seeing the return.).

    2. Amazing return. Austin Martin is THE young player that Bowman collectors are chasing this year. Business is gonna pick up at the card shop tomorrow.

    1. I wonder how far the front office will go. I can think of Pineda and Robles as probably traded with Kepler and Duffey as maybes. Kepler is under contract for a couple years so keeping for later makes sense.

      1. If both Martin and Lewis end up in the outfield, that's a lot of young outfielders.

  9. does Terry Ryan work for the Mets? Used to see this got of info leaked to Sid or Doogie when Ryan was running the show

    1. Heh. When I read Doogie’s tweet that no team made the Twins an offer for Simmons, I observed to my brother that Doogie seems to be working his way into Sid’s career path.

      1. He certainly took the mantle of " scoop master with a slant of homerism" after Sid passed.
