As not necessarily predicted, USA Men's Hoops lost their first game in pool play, to a very good France team (Gobert, Batum, Fournier, some decent bigs to back up Gobert, a couple of other shooters).
Team USA will not have a cake walk to the gold medal. They have more than enough talent to win every game, but the margin is not wide. Given that the international game is only 40 minutes, you have to come ready to play every quarter. It's hard to recover from a sloppy or cold start, and a cold/sloppy spell can doom you in a hurry.
I'm having a hard time getting into the Olympics this go-round. Maybe they just haven't hyped the games enough yet.

NBC's atrocious coverage is not helping.
Had a board meeting for my charity tonight - one of the guys is an ESPN ops dude. He said NBC is getting killed on Tokyo ratings.
If they'd focus on the Spain basketball team (and by that I mean Ricky) on the free stuff, they'd get those ratings back.
As I said at the outset, the two things I was going to watch was 7s and Simone Biles.
Going great on that front so far.
I watched the mixed doubles table tennis gold medal match last night. That was pretty much amazing.
Those folks are so good at table tennis that it doesn't even scan as the same thing that my friend and i used to play in his family's garage. They're SO good that extended volleys obviously don't happen very often, but when they do, they're incredible.
A lot the stuff I like to watch is on when I sleep or when I'm at work. A lot of stuff seems to be on Peacock and USA basketball is on the pay service. Im just not that dedicated to add another streaming service to my lineup.
USA and NBCSN seems to have 24 hour coverage of events, blended live and taped coverage, which is nice and I've had on in the background when I'm at home. I really do miss having all the Universal channels air things and I just flip back and forth between the channels. I really dont like watching tv using my laptop and I find using the apps on my FireStick tedious when I want to flip around.
I dunno, watching K/ Ledecky smoke the competition in the 1500 free was awesome. I was winded just watching.
b-bu-but she's a FAILURE because she hasn't won ALL THE GOLDS.
Surgery went smoothly today and I'm home resting. My parents took the peperoncino to his baseball game tonight (machine pitch), and we've gotten word that he got multiple hits (on the first pitch!) and has made multiple stops in the outfield!

This is an incredibly bad take, and I need the make sure it is recognized as such. I know that there are cranky white guys who have never been one thousandth as good at ANYTHING as Simone Biles is at gymnastics are pretty cranky with her right now, but.....they are wrong and dumb and their opinions are immediately discounted as without merit.
Like, Charlie Kirk is apparently pretty cranky, but Charlie Kirk is one of the dumbest people alive today, so...I'll take Simone Biles over Charlie Kirk in a heartbeat
I'd like us to respond with more empathy to both of these women. Especially considering how easy and pervasive mental health stigmatization is.
