10. As far as scoring goes, I think a lowest score wins system like golf is obvious, but how to treat those that miss a day? Should that count as a 7?

    1. Mark it an 8, dude.

    2. Maybe some sort of weighted scoring for participation, and the leaderboard is the average adjusted score. Or just average score with minimum plate appearances and number of entries is noted.
       We could be responsible for our own entries if we trust collective sheet management. (Not in a trustworthiness sense, but a "too-many-hands-make-a-mess" sense.

       "Score" is unused guesses (7 minus your score for the day - that way getting it in 6 is 1 point, not doing it or not getting the word is 0)

             1. Go to settings (the gear icon) to enable hard mode. There's also dark mode and high contrast for colorblind people. With hard mode enabled, your Wordle pastes will include an asterisk next to the guess count to indicate you're better than the rest.

       The game does do the right thing with multiple letters. If a word does not include duplicate letters, it will mark one letter green/yellow and the other grey. For instance, guessing BOMBS marks both Bs as yellow. Guessing BUBBY gives me one yellow B, one green B, and a grey B.

          This is the kind of thing that irritates me. Being "strategic" about commonality of letters leads people to start with similar words, which leads to more similar results, which is just less fun overall. It comes off more like "you should choose the easy path" not like "you should be strategic about the game". It'd be like if everyone always played chess the exact same way to start, instead of there being multiple competitive openings - that would make chess a lesser game. So, too, here, I feel like Wordle is improved by people having different starting spots, and not caring about letter commonality so much. There should be a random starting word generator.

             I decided to mix it up. I’m sure the creators know there are common starting words, so they go for words that aren’t completely spoiled by common first guesses. Based on that assumption, I decided to start each day with a random word that has a few common letters and a couple less common ones and just see how it goes.

             1. The word for each day is fixed ahead of time. I could tell you tomorrow's right now. That's why I didn't answer yesterday because I inadvertently spoiled it on Wednesday. There are around 2300 available words so we're set until the list runs out.

             I think it's exactly the same as chess. There are literally books about openers that are studied. Go may be a better example where again, there are books about openers and despite the huge opportunity space of openings (a full 19x19 grid!) it's pretty common to see the same moves. You start with something to explore the space and go from there. For me, it's super frustrating to have my first guess be blank so I want something that gives me the best opportunity to get something.

                My point is that it is unlike chess in terms of variety. Yes, there are whole books about opening moves in chess. In this case you couldn't write a whole book about it - as it's just a question of letter frequency the amount to be said about it is, at best, a pamphlet. It's a quick little word game, so whatever, it doesn't need to be complicated. But a better version is one where your starting spot isn't the same frequent letters day after day. Thus, I appreciate Rhu's use of the word "first" and HJ's (among others) mixing it up.

       2. Yeah, and when playing Wheel of Fortune I always do that. With this game I’m always expecting “gotcha” words for some reason, most likely because I played the app for years and had gotten to a level where words were almost predictable in their unpredictability.

    RACES TRASH WOULD SOLAR This is the first time I didn’t play in self-imposed hard mode, meaning I didn’t use the yellow letters I had from the first two guesses. It certainly helped get me out of an incorrect line of thinking. After WOULD I knew all 5 letters, and just needed to get them in order. I now understand better how beneficial it can be to not force yourself to use all the letters you have guessed right.
