Over the last year, due almost entirely to the podcast Cocaine and Rhinestones, I have found myself revisiting county music.

If you haven't listened, you should. I would start with the  three part series on "Harper Valley PTA" or the episode on the Kershaw Brothers, especially if you love Neil Young (E-6 signal).

I preface with that as a way of saying for the best of 2021 I would have liked to post any number of the songs I discovered from that podcast. Maybe one day I can get a month to share some of these things. Then again I may get booed out by jobu if I try that.

Instead here is something from 2021 that makes me think of the best parts of classic country music with the best parts of today's music. This song is tragic and funny in a way that only country music can be. It feels like John Prine or Bobby Braddock could have written this song and no one would question it

  1. Hope everyone enjoys. This song was a real gut punch for me the first time I heard it.

  2. I read that as Brittney Spears and not Spencer. I was really wondering how you were going to tie that in with that podcast.

    1. I have a feeling Mr. Coe would be able to find some parallels between Ms. Spears and his episode about the Judds.

      1. I looked into Spencer's music after she opened for Isbell at the Ryman. I'm waiting on a full album. I assume that must be coming soon.

  3. I've really enjoyed the Cocaine and Rhinestones Podcast as well. This season is amazing although the episodes are getting into the 2 hour plus length which is hard for me to stay with. I think I'm two maybe three episodes behind.

    1. I should warn you, those episodes are HEAVY. When we think about addiction in artists we too often romanticize it. He does an incredible job showing how dark it really can be. Just haunting stuff.

      1. I follow TMC on Twitter and he's been giving warnings. That episode last season about the 30's country star Spade Cooley was absolutely frightening as well.
