April 12, 2024: Clomp Clomp Clomp

I realized a while ago there's a(n annoying?) trope of bands/artists ending their albums by getting up, walking to and through a door, and closing it behind them. The Replacements, Neutral Milk Hotel, Julien Baker, and a few more I'm forgetting. What are your annoying music cliches? Also, while we're here, drop a list why not?

  1. Wilco did it on Being There.

The story was that Tweedy's son was being fussy and his wife carried to ask him when he'd be home. I think you can hear him say something about it being the last take at the start of the song and he literally got up and walked out while they left the tape running.

After hearing the story, I kind of like it. Adds a little context.

  3. Not necessarily a cliche, but the lyrics on Train's Soul Sister ".....untrimmed chest" annoys the crap out of me. If I hear the beginning of that song, I leave whatever building I am in. The dumbest sentence in any song ever written. (Yes, I realize that I am exaggerating)

    1. I didn't read, but generally understand the Doctorow enshittification idea. My hope is this continued drum-banging leads to the upcoming, more-online-capable generations considering putting their money toward non-shitty products and services. Of course, I have personal reasons to want this, but also I really believe there can be lots of good niche products that can both be profitable (to pay 10-20 people to work on them) and useful (to the people that want to use them).

The current super-enshittified area I'm thinking about: streaming omg.

          1. To be fair, the early internet was not built for commercial transactions so sharing was a common paradigm. When e-commerce entered the picture that all changed, but it didn't happen overnight and without resistance. What e-commerce reinforced is that when the commons and capitalism clash, capital usually wins.

          2. People usually shop based on price and not service. And then they complain when they don't get service for the lowest price.

I'm also likely to do that but I'm trying to be more aware of it and be willing to pay when service is better.

      1. Smart TVs can really tick me off sometimes. If they're so damn smart, how come they're so damn slow? I thought waiting for the TV to warm up went out with vacuum tubes.

  6. On the other side, loved how the album Glass Houses shows a picture of Billy throwing a rock at a glass house and the opening sound of the album is the glass breaking.

The one thing I really friggin hated when I was a kid were hidden tracks. Usually it wasn't a very good song anyway. The only time I didn't hate it was on Under the Table and Dreaming where the album ends with the song #34 and tracks #12 through #33 are all blank. The extra pause then before you get to that song appeals to me. Not sure if Her Majesty was ever a hidden track or if it was always listed; I like that one, too, and it's location. I've tried fitting the song in where it was originally supposed to go and it felt awkward to me.

Into the Great Wide Open -- Tom Petty
    What I Don't Know -- Dwight Yoakam
Nice Guys Finish Last -- Green Day
I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song -- Jim Croce
    The Change -- Garth Brooks
Ne Me Quitte Pas -- Regina Spektor
When Cowboys Didn't Dance -- Lonestar
Creeque Alley -- The Mamas and the Papas
    Cups -- Anna Kendrick
The Execution of All Things -- Rilo Kiley

    1. Here to second the hidden track deal. I hated espcially a song that was 20 minutes long with 13 minutes of silence between the two songs. Not only a pain on a CD, but the song name, etc usually wasn't listed.

  7. I can't think of a single song I would listen to that has a door closing at the end. I think in my realm you're more likely to hear the door opening at the start.
