We finish our set with the Brewers today after a couple of rough games (I think; I typed this in the middle of yesterday's game and just assumed we weren't coming back. I'm cynical like that).
Alright, let's get excited about...
Greinke versus Blackburn?! Okay, so let's get excited about something that's not baseball-related. Suggestions: Beer, the NBA Finals, Turbo Survivor at CdL, stamp collecting, classic episodes of "Mama's Family," Sid and Marty Krofft puppets, smokeless tobacco and Christmas.
I'll actually get to see one of my Sunday games since I'm closing today, but I'll keep my optimism in check on this one. Still, there's always the threat of Trevor Plouffe hanging over opposing pitchers.
Go Twins.
sigh
contact play doesnt work for the other team either.
boooooooooo
Mr. Watts seems lonely. So I'll jump in with a very important opinion:
I like Joe Mauer.

the rain is coming down harder
I can't stay, but I just stopped by to say that I really have nothing to say.
This game thread would have had 11 comments if I hadn't put three of them in the CoC.
And now it would have had 12.
13.
74.
Really just N+3 (though realistically, probably none of these comments, so N+3-X, where X is the number of comments in this particular string).
You failed to account for stealth comments placed on hidden boards.
Free game of the day? NOW I'm excited....
I've got 30 minutes until I get to take the girl to her violin lesson. I expect some Twins offense.
Tiger Dad!
Alright, I'm just waiting for the end of this My Little Pony episode, and then I get my TV back. It's certainly better than I expected a Greinke-Blackburn score to be.
I'm not sure how much I'll help with the sparse posting problem. My girls created activity books for me to do with them today. Those li'l honeydrippers.
Activity books? Lucky. My daughter just crapped herself during church for me. Or is that one of the activities?
It is called a pew.
+ (number) 2
Bravo.
My daughters don't crap themselves anymore and I don't go to church anymore, so I'm hoping not.
I think the most surprising part of this response is the "anymore". You used to go to church?
does Judas Priest count?
Nice.
I got a discount massage (the Boy's karate instructor is teaching him massage techniques, with me as the "subject", which is teh Awesome).
Some strike outs would come in handy RIGHT NOW.
Is that legal?
infield fly balls also accepted.
adorable pictures of Perk and his short stacks
Hi everybody!
Carne.
w00t! a K!
Glen Perkins wife dropped a 'pmki' on tv. sweet.
??
Yeah, I'm not hip either.
I hope that's a bad word.
pretty much killing it
Blackburn?
shitfuck.
ACK
And that's how you do it.
I'd be OK if Blackburn was no longer a Twin.
I've been saying that for a very long time.
I'm wondering if any other team would be dumb enough to use him as a starter, or if he'll immediately find himself in a bullpen when he moves on because no other team has invested so much in him that they feel required to start him.
Mop up reliever. No other team would see the upside in starting someone who is almost guaranteed to give up 6 runs over 5 innings.
Yep, he'd be fine if he was our...ugh, I can't remember his name. Guy who only came in during early garbage time. Initials are B.B.
Brian Bass. There it is.
I would say Blackburn is a good version of Bass.
The official WGOM term is Groundskeeper, named after Willie Eyre, i.e., Groundskeeper Willie.
Yeah, missed opportunity to use the lingo there.
trade Blackburn, Butera, and Doumit for Braun and Greinke
GIT R DUN WILD BILLY RYAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Come on Terry Ryan. Pull the trigger on this thing.
Sorry that this game has taken a decidedly Blackburnian twist to it.
I'M NOW A DUAL-MONITOR DAD! This is so cool, "working" on the widescreen and the game and Gameday on the second monitor. HFD dads, btw
Ploufffe!
That fits for both plays.
It has the extra 'f' for the second one.
boo
I thought I heard some on tv
Stupid Weeks slamming into Mauer at home @*%@(%)!
booooo he doesnt play through injuries
boooo, he is playing through injuries and doesnt take an extra base
saw Corey Hart last year at Busch Stadium -- that dude is a tall drink of water
I've stood next to him while selling him video games. He is enormous.
Hilariously, his...girlfriend? (she was with him both times)...is tiny. I'd say 5'3".
cool. coolcoolcool.
w00t!
And Hart's height saves a run.
I don't think I've seen a first baseman dive quite like that.
It was really awkward-looking, but for him I'm sure it's an everyday sort of move.
BENNY!!!
Reversie!
BOO!!!
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Brewers color guy: "And that's what the Twins do, they'll dink ya and doink ya to death. They're not going to drive the ball much..."
Eh, they're right in the middle for team slugging.
can't blame 'em, Braun is slugging better than the Twins this series
aw, hopefully it's just a tweeked hammy
It was sore yesterday, so I think it's just sorer now. Probably shouldn't have played anyway.
I don't like pinch-running with Mastroianni. Not the go-ahead run and using Butera instead saves Mastroianni for something more important.
I agree.
Like being designated for assignment?
Eh, he's a fourth outfielder. He has 0.3 rWAR, so that's good enough for me.
That's a bit better than what I expected.
Just sticking with Greinke, are we? I guess Consuela's a righty, but he's throwing eggshells out there.
He had struck out three (now four) times already. Seemed likely Greinke would hand him the Sombrero
Ah, I missed those ABs, mostly.
Hammer gets on, and you know a lefty reliever comes in against Morneau
And the Bullseye faithful find in their hearts to boo Willingham, too. Honestly, I'm comforted by the fact that it isn't just a Joe thing, but a "What have you done for me lately?" thing. They're still idiots, but at least they're idiots across the board.
Ben Revere has a monster sized glove.
It would be big even if Hart was using it.
I can guess who taught him that trick.
I am warming up to this Revere kid.
Dick, "splange" rhymes with "strange", not with "flange"
Dick knowing the word period is a bit of a surprise.
ouch!
The cut off line for making the throw is the 5th best throwing catcher in the game.
Brewers feed has taken to calling Maldonado "Mr. Clutch." They prove it with a 5-for-17 sample from the 7th inning on. This is of course just in time for him to ground into an uno.
I love the chance to prove announcers wrong when they proclaim someone to be clutch, but it's so much better when they prove it themselves by pointing out a solid but completely unspectacular BA in a tiny sample.
So a 1 AB sample was large enough to prove an 17 AB sample was too small?
boy, we really could use a proven closer to pitch in this tied ballgame in the ninth...
You just don't get the point of rigid bullpen roles, do you?
Anytime I see Carlos Gomez do well I am pleased. Even against the Twins.
Me too, although I wonder if, in his goofy little head, he even fully understands what's going on.
He was insanely nice to my nephew (who was 2 at the time) at a game once. I liked him before that, but I've loved him ever since.
The logical part of me is annoyed that the Twins got away with IBBing a right-handed power hitter for the privilege of facing two slightly lesser right-handed power hitters, but the Twins fan part of me doesn't mind so much.
Brewers score one in the first, Twins score one in the third. Brewers score three in the fifth, Twins score three in the seventh. I'm sensing a trend.
Dick Bremer begging for a bunt.
why am I not surprised Dick's itching for the bunt?
Forget robot umps...I'm thinking robot commentators could fill in for the Twins and the average fan wouldn't even notice the difference.
if they show the stats on-screen, ballpark noise is enough for me
I love ballpark noise broadcasts.
Carroll for President!
A well-placed bunt could have done that.
Maybe the reason Span didn't bunt is because he has a .351 OBP this year.
Brewers color: "Span's not having a great game, why not just have him bunt?"
Brewers PBP: "Well, it doesn't seem to be the Ron Gardenhire way."
Where to start with this?
Only the Yankees, Indians and Blue Jays have had more successful sacrifice bunts this year and I seem to remember several times when players bunted on their own.
nice take out by Carroll
Drew Butera is going to hit a home run!
Butera is going to do something awesome
This seems like it would be a good situation for Mauer to be batting.
Bruised quadriceps from the collision at home was what Dict said.
More liked bruised lady parts.
SEND HIM!!!!
Brewers color guy now wondering why Revere isn't running on someone with such a high leg kick. Yep, I'll give him this one.
Because Butera is batting. It isn't going to matter.
And if Mauer had been batting, he probably would have just drawn a walk, so it wouldn't have mattered then either. Boooooo.
Butera's definitely had pretty good ABs lately. Even with a backwards K there.
🙁
damn. nasty pitch.
That's a lot of hits for only eight runs.
This is only the third extra inning game for the Twins all season? Is that possible?
Crappy teams usually don't need more than nine innings to lose.
Our staff isn't good enough for those 0-0 tie games
Josh WillinghamJustin Morneau is going to hit a home run!Nah it's going to be Plouffe.
Only if the bases are empty though. Take one for the team Morneau.
Hmm that seemed unnecessary. Twins baseball.
BEN EFFIN REVERE
Big glove made all the difference.
REVERE GOT ON HIS HORSE!
That was a nice catch by Revere.
That catch was enough for me to get this bacon beer out.
Let me know what you think. I dug it a lot, but drinking it with my best friend while hanging out for the first time in a few years probably colors that experience.
I opened the fridge and saw so many things that I knew would be delicious so I changed my mind. I will share with the nation when I do try it though.
Interestingly, there's even a category for those kinds of posts.
Dick wants everyone to bunt.
Maybe Dozier's bunt will satiate him.
Bremer suggests Doumit bunt, then Doumit laces one to RF for a single.
Ugh. I'm not even going to be able to see the end of my Father's Day game. Work in half an hour.
This is my first Sunday closing shift in months. I'M THE ONLY FATHER IN THE DEPARTMENT! BAHHHHHHH
Drew Butera is unavailable for pitching. Could we see Lexi Casilla?
rain delay.
Nice job Twins. Rain wins the game.
Hey fellas. I heard the last two innings in the car and got home just in time to see the rain delay.
I guess this give me time to watch the Euro matches I missed. If anyone tells me the results, I set Omar on you to slobber all over your keyboard and ruin it.
rain delay music: Stevie Ray Vaughan
httpv://youtu.be/ix3inTQps20
I'm going to have to mozy...good luck, whomever is here when the rain lets up.
Jeff Gray warming up as the game is close to starting again
Scoreless innning.
Butters' walk-up choice still highly amuses me when I hear it in the background of the broadcast.
On the brink!
Come on Plouffe
I thought that ball was going to the wall.
Alright then. Come on Doumit.
Well crap.
ARGH
Even more free baseball!
the pitcher looked hurt there
you know its getting late in a ballgame when the announcers are referencing 2500 year old books.
Even money now as to whether the Twins game will end before the Fire game I'm watching(it began at 4.20).
I started the Euro matches I missed at 4:45. I'm in the 65th-ish minute of both. I might be in the same boat as you.
I watched those live and this Twins game started 35 minutes before them. They ended almost 2 and a half hours ago.
Heat/OKC starts in an hour.
I wonder if the Twins are playing in an hour whether they'll get blacked out.
I went to target and saw prometheus and this thing is still going on.
LOL.
I drove the girl to Davisville (10 miles each way) for a one-hour violin lesson plus a trip to the coop for beer supplies, then went to Costco (prime Ribeyes) for dinner, then BACK to Costco (to return an item and get the correct one). and still.
Holy crap! This game is still going on? Freeeeeee baseball on Father's day! I am here for Revere to end it now.
or not.
Still, I have a St. Peter's IPA for the 14th. #winning
OF COURSE Jeff Gray is in the game.
this is his 3rd inning.
so, his win is just a matter of time.
If this game goes on any longer Butera is going to get his second relief appearance of the year.
No, because then Doumit goes behind the plate and Gardy loses his DH.
If we're out of pitchers, then we don't need a DH.
looks like the last time a Twins game went at least 14 was July 3, 2009. All Star RA Dickey took the loss.
And the Chicago Fire games comes to an end. It started 3 hours 10 minutes after the Twins game.
And my games are over now as well.
On the grill: Carnitas pizza, one white, one franks red hot.
Time for the helicopter, Jason Morneau.
WTP. Boo.
Why is TC the Bear wearing his hat backwards?
he is trying to be extreme!
Because Poochie did.
Yeah, that comment is a winner.
Dick now slamming our old friend Slowey without mentioning his name. About how he "refused" to pitch out of the bullpen. Ugh.
Where's that horse gif?
Hate "no doubles" defense. Feels like "prevent" defense to me.
Man, Carlos Gomez hates the Twins.
Oy, this doesn't look good.
That wasn't the outcome I spooked.
Is bert taking time away to prep for retirement?
Plouffe single!
Bunt the everloving crap out of it Doumit!
Kill?Dozier.
So Twins...
LIDDLE~!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
f-ing Liddled. Or Plouffed?
Plouffe would've been nailed at home. He just ran too far beyond third.
less the former, more the latter.
It was Ploufffed. And dangit, I want this extra-'f' thing to stick! Perfect opportunity for it. C'mon people. He's not that good!
Browbeating won't sway the populace, pally.
I assure you, something was lost in the translation.
When did the Twins rehire Ulger?
Balls.
I guess Plouffe ran through the stop sign.
Drag bunt it, Span.
SPANTASTIC!
You'll notice who Gardy is talking to here.
WINNER
SWEET SHIT!
I love how the entire team chased Span into the OF
Dude doesn't want to risk a celebration related concussion relapse.
DSPAN does his best Laddie impersonation!
d-nard.
35 hits between the 2 teams, only 6 extra base hits.
Twins with 20 hits, and Span had the only extra base hit with a double.
Twins relievers pitched 9 shutout innings.
Twins pitchers walked 5 and struck out only 7.
Philosofette: "5 and a half-hour game? That's like a Yankees'-Red Sox game. Or maybe just a Jeter at bat." ::Pantomimes Jeter at the plate, fiddling with gloves, holding up the pitcher, calling time, fiddling with gloves, etc.::
Not only is she a Twins fan, not only is she a baseball fan, but she knows the game well enough to accurately make fun of Jeter. I love her.
Next time, let's just start with the bullpen and end it in 9.
I love extra-inning games, especially when the good guys win. I wish I could've been around for it. We're still on track for 123-39!
