For some reason, the Twins merit one of the two late games tonight, so here's hoping we can enjoy three innings of Twins baseball before we all inevitably switch over to the much more important and intriguing Yankees-Red Sox game. Cole DeVries, who has a last name that is pronounced annoyingly, faces Roy Oswalt, who also has a last name that's pronounced annoyingly. And the similarities don't stop there! Actually, they probably do.
It hasn't been much of a first half, but I'll agree with other Citizens of late...it isn't like last year, where the team looked directionless and pathetic in the second half, and it hasn't become a chore to watch my favorite team play my favorite sport. Though they're behind last year's pace by a game or two, this team isn't likely to once again put up a historically awful final couple of months leading into a 99-loss campaign.
Thanks for another enjoyable half-season of game logs, Citizens, and SBG: as always, thanks for making this community possible. Bring this one home, gents. I have a night shift that will rob me of my rightful Sunday ballgame.
Go Twins.
I'm so sick of this Shinedown song.
FSN needs to consult with the EA Sports people to get a decent playlist going.
I didn't things could get much worse after the GB Leighton fiasco, but alas...
The Twins earn it because day games just don't happen in Texas.
coming into the game, Joe Mauer (.452) had a higher slugging percentage than Justin Morneau (.445)
is the game blacked out for those who live out of market?
For some reason the game is blacked out here in Nebraska on mlb.com.
Legends Territory, and with the Yankmes on national tv, it is no surprise.
blacked out on mlb.tv for me, but it's on my local fsn.
Oswalt at 49 pitches already- going to be a lot of pitching changes in this one, I think.
email question: what do the non-All Star player do during the All Star break?
answer: dont get arrested
Someone should explain to Adrian Peterson that it's the same principle that should be applied in the off-season.
that was some loud thunder! looks like rain?
I'm not watching, but as loud as that thunderclap sounded, I think they need to get people off the field for a while.
The close up of DeVries showed the wind really tugging at his jersey.
De Vries doing his part for that.
Im guessing the 30 mph wind kept that ball in the ballpark
morneau destroyed that ball
WHOA
Wow, that was very loud.
that might be the fastest Ryan Doumit has run since he was 10 years old
Doumit and Napoli ran to their dugouts while Oswalt casually strolled off the field.
Holy. Pete.
of the 7 games on this road trip, 4 of them have been delayed.
I'd like to request the Twins to visit South Dakota over the All-Star break and bring their rainmaker with them.
Second.
its probably not a good idea to be holding an umbrella while sitting out in the grandstands with lightning in the area.
oh look, the 50 Greatest Twins program is on AGAIN
okay, is this really "Delayed Lightning" or is it "Delayed Mauer Is Really Good"?
youtube video of the lightning
httpv://youtu.be/1uYXSS3N3wk
Wuss-ball. Stand there and take the lightning in your shoulder like a man.
the twitter machine says 7:55 central time for resumption of the game
didn't delay quite long enough.
I am a bit surprised that both starting pitchers remained in the game after the rain delay. Not saying it's wrong, and granted it was not a lengthy delay, but it still seems like that isn't done very often these days.
I think I remember hearing somewhere the general rule is 45 minutes, maybe a little longer if they only pitched an inning or less.
My favorite kind of double play.
I really like Cole DeNotblackburn.
on the board!
the Twins have turned quite a few 1-6-3 double plays this series
Cole DeNotpavano is tossing a gem here. Time for some more Allstate, though.
When the radio crew started talking about where Pavano was at in his rehab, I realized that I haven't missed Carl at all since he got hurt.
Teeth of the beastly Tejas order due up. This is where The Legend of Cole DeVries is born.
is Josh Hamilton chewing on a toothpick while he hits?
Shades of UL Washington.
I had to look that name up. wiki says "U L" is has legal first name. awesome.
he was a little before my time
Willie Kirkland was the first dude I remember rockin' a toothpick.
(An older brother had a card of his with the Senators.)
this one
did Dusty Baker have a toothpick in his mouth when he played?
He might have, but I don't remember him with one on his baseball cards. He definitely manages with one.
According to Atteberry, yes. Seems strange to me, too.
I noticed it last night.
I recall him saying he was giving up chewing tobacco, so the toothpick might be his substitute.
I temporarily substituted toothpicks for cigarettes back when I quit, so I'll assume this is true.
I picked this trait up from my dad. Neither of us have ever been smokers. I could be anything.
Hamilton has well-known addiction problems, apparently just quit chewing tobacco and it coincided with chewing toothpicks. It could be anything, but why wouldn't it be this?
Casey Fien sighting!
This counts as the longest outing for De Vries.
that was a dandy curve from Cozy Cole DeVries
I'll be pissed if Fien pitches worse than Parmelee would have.
is Fien the Chuck James of 2012?
Does AMR have a huge crush on Fien?
And therein lies the rub...
Yikes, that was a loud out.
BandboxTarget Field!I was hoping Gardenhire didn't get cute with bullpen management. This is way too stressful.
We have to use Burton and Perkins to protect four-run leads and now we have to go to Fien to protect a one-run lead. Sheesh. It worked out, but it would have been nice to try to use other relievers with a four-run lead. If they start to blow it, then you bring in the top relievers to clean up the mess.
I'd have rather left Fien in another inning...
Nathan pitched 40ish pitches last night, and he is back out there tonight
Not looking like a great decision!
oh my!
Geckos
The Rangers almost never have day games during the hottest months. I think July counts.
this ballpark is playing huge tonight. wow.
That's what she said.
Dick still hasn't learned, and Gordo's Span's fly out.
Awesome.
E-6.
Punk.
Dozier Plouffe'd that throw.
That was my immediate thought as well. He has to eat that ball.
I think a Plouffe would be more apt if he didn't bobble it at first.
Dozier Ploufffe'd that throw.
FTFY
Yeah, that would work since we're referring to last year's Ploufffe.
I'm so glad Hamilton is not the tying run.
Now I'm glad Beltre is not the tying run.
How about Cruz though?
How about walking off?
How about shutting up.
Woah.
Bad Panda.
Frustrated Panda.
I'm glad he was the tying run and Beltre wasn't.
Crap.
NOOOOOOOO
I probably shouldn't be caring nearly as much as I am about a midseason game for a team with one of the worst records, but man, I really really do.
I'm very angry at Dozier right now.
OMG,
ColeI deserve better than this.Perkins' misadventures finally cost us.
Lord, it had to be Michael Young didn't it?
all these 2 strike hits are frustrating
All these 0-2 offspeed pitches when you got to 0-2 on fastballs are frustrating.
That last one was a terrible swing at a good pitch.
NBB found that one, threw it away, and the rangers found it.
I knew he should have kept it. Stuck it in the missus purse, or something.
Well, they've already used Ross, Adams and Nathan, so we just need a big inning against their middle relievers.
How about shutting up. π
We want this to come true.
My point still stands. π
And a not-so-big inning against our ... pitchers.
I wonder if Duensing would be available tonight.
I would predict a HR. But the way the things are going tonight, one has to super destroy a ball to reach the bleachers.
I predict one, too. But not by a Twin.
evening, all. did i miss anything?
you missed a couple playing crapping their pants because lightning struck about 2 blocks from the stadium
A bit of shutting up was had by all.
httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CyVFv7AdJ-0
My avatar looking awesome grilling.
We discussed toothpicks at the Major League Level.
I see Nick Punto is trending on twitter. I guess he is the clean up batter for the BoSox, and he also slid into first base for a hit
Oy, Stainedsassy.
Twins aren't losing on my watch. I'm off to bed. Early day at the UP Mothership. Good luck, Citizens.
Dozier pretty much sucks, right?
The bloom is off that
rosepansy.Yep, he sucks.
actually, i thought that was established long ago. what he's still doing here, i'm not sure.
Limited options I guess. Carrol, Casilla, or Nishi? Yikes.
it was established awhile ago, but your point is still valid.
Man, I'd like this one to be over sooner than later as I have to pack my TV, but I'd like our team to win. I may go to bed disappointed.
Pack it up, baby.
And miss the opportunity to see Joe Mauer become a hero? Naw.
I'll be packing my TV now.
Did Carroll have a chance at getting Cruz?
Nope, he was two steps beyond first when the throw went past.
That might have been even worse than Dozier's throw. Ugggggh.
Time for a 2 for 1.
Fire Alex Burnett.
Into the sun.
Don't these players realize that it's their last day before vacation?
Burnett picks up Swizzlestack.
And now the Twins game is the last one going.
Not a good start to this half inning.
So much for having packed up your TV, huh?
Nope.
The umps want this game over too, I see.
Ploufffe?
I'm ok with it being done. I guess. Twins offense didn't do a single thing in extras.
It's not that it was a bad road trip; it's just that it could have been substantially better. Still, that's baseball. We'll just have to settle for 113-49!
