2012 Game 157: Detroit Tigers at Minnesota Twins

Some other dude that's probably worse

Six games left. Another bad year. Since the season is all but over, let's take a look at how the team performed versus the league.

Batting: 9th (4.38 runs/game)
Pitching: 14th (5.19 runs/game)
Starters: 14th (5.94 runs/game)
Relievers: 8th (4.19 runs/game)
Fielding: 11th (.688 DefEff)

Compared to last year:
Batting: 13th (3.82 runs/game)
Pitching: 13th (4.96 runs/game)
Starters: 12th (5.16 runs/game)
Relievers: 14th (4.94 runs/game)
Fielding: 14th (.677 DefEff)

I don't think the numbers for this season are describing anything we don't already know: the starters have been awful. I do think the improvement in the offense and relief pitching from bad to below average makes this season not a complete loss. I am very curious what the Twins will do this offseason.

  1. Dick: We tend to think of a couple runs and a couple runners left on as a bad inning.
Me: Uh, because it is a bad inning?

  2. If a tree falls in WGOM and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound?

Cabrera, 0-1; Mauer 0-0 with a BB. So the batting race tightens a little bit more.

  3. .003 points between Mauer and Cabrera. For some reason, Cabrera was referred to as a "teddy bear" by Dick.

  4. I wonder if there's ever been a 9-6 force out on a grounder. I know 9-3 has certainly happened plenty of times.

        1. I just found out it was happening!!!

With one out, Bailey almost hit the batter in the head and the crowd booed. Yeah, he's really looking to hit a guy there, Pittsburgh.

  5. Ooooh... how awesome would it be if the Tigers miss out on the playoffs because they don't score a run here and lose the game by one and miss the playoffs by one game??

    Pretty awesome, right??

    1. the only problem in that equation is that the White Sox actually have to win a game or two down the stretch

  6. Is that the first time Revere has thrown someone out at home? I honestly can't remember if he's done it before.

He should hit a home run when he comes up to bat this inning. I know he's never done that.

  7. since 2000, there have only been 3 Twins to get 84 walks in a season: Matt Lawton's 91 in 2000, and Joe Mauer 84 in 2008 and this year.

  8. Ryan Doumit makes his push for MVP! Scott Diamond makes his push for Cy Young! We're still on track for 71-91.
