NWS predicts 35 degrees and dropping temperatures tonight. The Twins might be able to break the coldest game record two weeks into the season. They also predict the precipitation potential as holding at around 50% through the night, so this may be one of the few (only?) games where it actively snows.
Except for the freezing temperatures part compounded by lack of sun, some slight flurries might be preferable to rain. I am sure the players will take solace in that.
Jon "I'm from Ohio and snow is no big deal" Niese
vs
Vance "Sacramento doesn't get snow" Worley
I was very confused as to why this wasn't on TV yet, then I realized the sidebar is Central Time.
Yeah, this is going to be cold.
Worley in short sleeves again. I really like the cut of his jib.
I'd like it even more if he'd get an out or two.
Vance 'Brad Radke' Worley
We get SNY here at the rink, but it looks like I'm fortunate to be in a place where I can't see a TV.
Vance Worley? More like Joanne Worley so far.
I was looking forward to watching this one, but I might changing channels soon.
Ah, forget this. I'm gonna go try to see Jurassic Park in 3D.
//only movie time is at 9:40? [redacted].
The Mets are a snow team, it appears.
What the @%#^ is this bull&$%#?
NBBW just found it on the big screen, it's snowing!!
And Worley in short-sleeves, w00t!
Mets announcer: "How cold does it have to be before you cancel the game? Below freezing? Below 30?"
10 run rule
Meow.
Really cold.
That can't be right.
Probably more right than this game.
Snowing, but not accumulating, I think.
Maybe the game started at 71 and got cold fast? There are a few that have temps listed in the low 80s with snow.
So the answer is...13 degrees?
Looking through the cold games, according to Retrosheet, and some of them also don't make sense. Looking at the plausible games, I think upper 20s degrees is the limit, and that's rare.
CF is wearing a balaclava, that's a first!
If this game was a movie, I'd be sneaking into the neighboring theater now.
I'd let the home team bat first. I'm thinking neither pitcher will be particularly sharp.
But the next movie is starting!!
(actually, I'm watching Life of Pi right now)
Yeah, might be time to catch up on some TV.
LOP was a great read - and good watch - I killed several hours on my return flight from Argentina with it.
A Hicks Base-on!
Don't call it a comeback.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
The key question is, does Willingham also hit a double now?
Doumit now beardless. With Robertson gone, must have figured there was no point.
Well, good to see I should be able to get some reading in tonight.
Mets TV showing Harmon clips...
Woah. I barely recognize Doumit.
Did he slip on the snow/ice?
The so-called "green ice" can be deadly this time of year.
NBBW opines pity for the Points-South players who have to deal with this (D.R., P.R., Venez., etc.)
I think Punto was having flashbacks of getting socked by FOTF when he was standing behind Kemp's tirade.
At this rate we'll finish at 45-18 (Gurl's basketball).
with Drew Butera not on the roster, who will pitch the 9th inning of this blowout?
Escobar is the third catcher now, right?
So Correia is pitching like we thought Worley might, and Worley is pitching like Gleeman thought Correia might. Interesting.
I think we'll see both be crappy, along with Pelfrey.
And Hendriks, and DeVries, and Deduno, and...
But so much better than last year!
Worley's career numbers: 3.59 ERA, 3.54 FIP, 3.83 xFIP. He'll be fine, assuming good health (which is assuming a lot given the way things have gone the last couple years).
Now Bert wishing for strikeout pitchers.
Met sqwaukers musing on Worley's (lack of) work ethic.
Starting to wonder if he should have worn long sleeves?
What a disappointing night for Worley.
At least he has someone else to be disappointing with.
Ruh-roh.
The Buffalo Buffaloes could not have, in its wildest dreams, imagined the kind of season John Buck is having this season.
I could have.
bandbox
Provus with the un-Gordo.
John Buck, future MVP.
Mauer with Power.
That ball must have stung when it got out there. Being cold and all. Also and it was a rocket.
Plenty of time for a comeback...
It will be awesome when the Twins win this game.
Time to switch to the Wolves?
I would if I could, but Comcast once again is not showing the FSN+ channel for the 2nd time this week, and the other day they cut the Wolves game off at 11pm.
Watching the Jazz feed on League Pass. Do I root for the Wolves because it is the right thing to do or do root for the Jazz as it is essentially rooting against the Lakers?
I'm watching. I think our chances are slim, so no sense in worrying about it.
I'm rooting against Stern.
Top of the second. A new record,
who invoked the 10 run rule above? only a matter of time
John Buck has an interesting trade history. Parts of trade including Carlos Beltran, Mark Buerhle, and RA Dickey
Eephus wail helps Florimania.
with his walk earlier this game, Aaron Hick now has more walks (3) than hits (2)
If only he didn't have as many strikeouts as other outs.
I just have to figure out what to do till the Mad Men replay starts in an hour.
Nephew just signed up with National Guard. Proud of him, but also watching CNN posts on DPRK.
will the Mets score 5 runs this inning?
FSN running a Twitter poll: who was the better pitcher the Twins got in the Viola trade: Aggy or Tapani
not a fair question because Aggy's beard is worth like 25 percentage points.
So the Mrs. and I were thinking of going to this game but given the weather we decided against it. We did decide to have a nice evening at home watching the game with popcorn, beer, candy etc. Thank God we stayed home, but still not as nice an evening as he had hoped.
Not-InkyMinky is looking like the best pickup of the offseason so far.
I don't know who this refers to. My pick for best pickup of the offseason is Jamie Hersch.
...wait, I think you're saying the same thing here.
Mets broadcast doing a poll for how many games Quentin should be suspended.
4th option: same number of weeks that Greinke is out.
Mine: break Quentin's collarbone.
Picking on a guy that's a fraction of your size is not cool.
I want Neck Tat to hit him next.
My problem with same number of weeks that Greinke is out is that 1) Greinke put his shoulder in a bad spot and is at least in small part to blame. He didn't have to taken on Quentin. He wouldn't be the first pitcher to chuck his glove at the batter and hope his 1B gets there quickly (Of course that's easy to say from behind a keyboard, I know. But I also know from experience that you can actually think quite a bit in a small time frame about how, or even if, to respond to someone bearing down on you like that) and 2) I think you punish the action, not the result. Charging the mound should have a standard ban (10 games or whatever [unless the batter takes his bat with him, then it's obviously more serious).
It's unfortunate that Greinke got hurt, but I don't think that you punish a batter depending on the injury to the pitcher.
You would have not liked Torts class.
Greinke's an eggshell, Dude, an eggshell.
Im surprised Quentin didnt get injured too. 131 is his highest games played season.
Much speculation on the next time these teams meet.
8 games.
Twins hit a hard fly ball and it falls into the OF glove. Mets hit a hard fly ball and it ends up in the second deck.
The Yankees just turned one of the weirdest triple plays in the history of baseball.
dang, that was crazy, and some awful baserunning by Machado
It was, but deep down, we all know that it was Casilla's fault.
'Myron Byrd' - Bert
Is that a 70s rock band?
I'm thinking buckets and accordion.
Pink Floyd meets James Taylor.
I've seen fire and I've seen MAGMA.
SEND HIM!!!!!
Wee, first pitch swinging for Hicks! Good for him.
It's as good as a hit.
Okay, next TV show.
Switched back to TIBN. Some flappage about M11. Vas?
It looked like the refs should have at least considered a flagrant on that and-one for Rubio. It wasn't a hard push, but shoving a dude in the back while he's in the air is extremely dangerous.
Clearly Canadian!
Okay, Provus Gordo'd that one big time.
Agreed. I thot we had people kayaking in the Mississipi River for the ball.
A dangerous hitter up to a point once said
to be fair, Morneau crushed that ball and it hit the very top of the right field power alley wall
STUPID TALL WALL
EIGHT RUN INNING HERE WE COME.
LET'S DO THIS!
Mets wait four innings before giving up their give-back runs. Is that allowed?
Doh!mit!
SAFE
WOOO!!
Looked out.
he was very out
This is the beginning of the end of John Buck's hot streak.
Ladies and gentlemen, we have a ballgame! Oh, who am I trying to kid.
gotta love the dudebros fighting over the bat that flew into the stands.
oh great. pitcher injury
Rest for three months, TJ surgery in July.
That's good advice for all of us.
after the grand slam, Hernandez pitched pretty good
Agreed.
Right now, I'm hearing Blyrt Blyleven say that in my head.
Not talking bullpen. Weird.
Huh, Morneau tags out Buck an inning after Buck 'doesn't' tag out Morneau.
just saw a replay of that Yankee triple play. crazy! and Alexi Casilla was involved
Yep. It was clearly all his fault.
This guy pitching for the Mets looks like he's about 50.
That's what I was thinking. Actually I'm over 50 and he looks a lot older than me. Also where are Topeka and Santa Fe.
Craigslist is dangerous boys. Naked lover ends up with road rash.
ugh
Did they finally stop deciding to call that stupid "transferring the ball" rule? Or is this ump just a poopy face?
Florimon never caught it.
I've seen them give the call for less. It was in his glove.
I don't think it was. Well, maybe for a few milliseconds.
Bert: Twins have a lot of long relievers in their bullpen.
We call them groundskeepers, Bert.
The question is: Can they pitch?
Hernandez was really good tonight*.
*After he got tattooed by John Buck.
Is it possible to cite errors to suggest a player is not good and mock errors as a useless stat? Seems inconsistent.
Possibly, given how hard it is to actually be called for an error.
There's that, too.
Yeah, I caught that.
I didnt want to say anything, but yeah
OK, how about he has a career -12.7 UZR/150. But at least he has the best K/BB rate on the team. I'm sure he'll keep that up.
That is--to use the parlance of our times--not good.
Elvis needs to leave the building.
Yeah, this wasn't fun before, certainly isn't now.
So the wife asks, "is this what's going to be like the whole season?" I said, Yeah, the pitching is really bad. She then asks "why, why can't we get good pitchers?" To be frank, I didn't have a good answer.
by the time the Twins get a good pitcher, they'll need Tommy John.
Pitch to impact.
Mrs. Buffalo just said "14 is a lot of runs to score in a baseball game".
A touchdown and a field goal and we're back in the lead.
Tragically, my 8-run inning is insufficient for this game.
You could see that hanger and anticipate Mauer lacing it for a hit even before he did it.
Hernandez with a calf strain. Day to day. {insert tired Joak here.}
It's gonna be hard to figure out why he needs TJ surgery for that.
I reallllllly wish I could watch the Wolves game on FSN+ like promised because judging by twitter its a real slobberknocker
At one point or another, they've tried to murder each and every one of our point guards.
so, a normal Timberwolves game.
This did not end well.
this Mets pitcher throws like Pat Neshek
This may be Hicks' first game to not record a strikeout. One more plate appearance guaranteed to keep the streak going.
Happy now?
No.
I'm going to bed. Here's to hoping the Twins don't waste their 8-run inning here.
Let's go Warriors?
I'm going to bed now, I'll listen on my iPod. This comeback is gonna be awesome.
burns the closer
Not looking good for the Twins right now.
Hicks with a K. :/
The strikeout streak continues.
The ump officially entered the "I want to go home" phase.
yeah. that 9th inning strikezone was this big [_____________]
with 2 hits tonight Joe Mauer is now at batting .302
also, Vance Worley's WHIP now stand at 2.42
Hicks has two hits and has three runs scored and three RBIs. So, he might be hitting.051, but it's an impactful .051.
He's very RISPy.
That weather was fit for neither men nor Vanimals. They really shouldn't count a game played in those conditions, but I guess they're going to. So, we'll just have to settle for 156-6!
