Busy, busy work week for me. I think I've got my summer mix done; I just need to cut one or two tracks and sequence it. But I haven't had time for that yet, and my new "hip hop for my 8-year-old daughter" project is taking a lot of my listening time. What is that human instinct that makes us add more projects when we're already swamped?
One track that sure as heck is going to make the cut for my summer mix is "Dirt" by WU LYF. I caught the video on pitchfork (mostly just listened to it) and really, really dug it. Tribal drums, electric organ drones, and post-comprehensible barked vocals. It reminds me a lot of the good songs on the first and third Animal Collective albums. But where the "other" tracks on the Animal Collective albums were noisy and impenetrable, I find that the other tracks by Wu LYF err in the other direction: it sounds like mid-90's shoegaze, but with those same guttural vocals. The results on 90% of the album are disappointing, but the mix on this one song is just perfect, and I hope to hear more songs like that on any future releases. Give it a listen.
If you search for the video, it flashes they lyrics above B&W images of riots. Avoid it, and imagine your own lyrics. I've got "No matter what they said, Ja Rule is not your friend"* at 2:20.

no list, but i had a hankering for some new music. after not hearing a single song, i decided to grab something by the decemberists. wasn't sure where to start, and i usually to start earlier in a band's career if i start listening to them. then, i saw "o valencia!" and thought that's the one. i'm really digging on the crane wife now. it gets a richardson from me (two thumbs up). now that they've had their #1 record, have they lost their hipster cool status? i'm always late to these things...
also, on that topic, i've had a real problem lately listening to stuff in my library i used to listen to. for example, i'm sure some of you have a few songs here and there that take you back to a time and place that at certain moments you think, "ah man, i can't listen to this now, it's too depressing". pretty much my whole library's been doing that lately. even stuff i listened to a few years back in college. life isn't terrible now or even close to it, but i just can't listen to anything from back in the day, hence, i keep having to run out and get new music like the decemberists. what the hell is wrong with me?
There is a huge chunk of music I can't really listen to because it reminds me too much of Ireland. I hear My Maudlin Career and I'm walking through Ballsbridge on an absolutely perfect early June morning on the way to a rugby tournament. It was an awesome day, and I wish my life was more like that. Not that things are terrible now, just that that summer was probably the best time of my life.

Okay, good. I've heard the R.E.M. comparisons, and a number of them have been framed rather negatively. I enjoy the idea of a "they're back" album from R.E.M., and the idea of The Decemberists doing that album doesn't really bother me.

Just make sure you listen to The Tain. This is absolutely my favorite thing the Decemberists have done, I was giddy when they played it live.
"The Perfect Crime #2" is my personal fave. Saw them do that on Austin City Limits
Most of my library I can't listen to anymore, either. I think that at this point I'd rather be looking forward than looking back, and most of the music I have is deeply associated to past success and failures. Most of the music I listened to at the printshop now grates my ears, Dr. Dog excepted, but I don't think I'll want to hear the black key's rubber factory anytime soon.

The summer that I enlisted I was performing my internship and working in a bar. I went to the internship around 5am, and usually didn't get home from the bar until 11pm. I wasn't making much money, so I only had three CDs for my summer music - the 2CD Hank Williams The Ultimate Collection, and The Patsy Cline Story. Bombing around in a beat-up '81 Volvo, I listened to Hank in the morning and Patsy at night. Apart from one summer's mix I made for life in Southern California, I haven't made a summer mix since. Might be time to revisit that task.
Tying threads: if you do this and listen to it a lot, those songs start to get to hungry joe's situation where the sounds bring up the mood. The Streets' "Fit But You Know It" was on the 2004 mix, and we listened to that on our first vacation with a child. The song now stresses me out.

I get a little skeezed out by it. It's really good music, but it's soulless. Not that it doesn't have character, because it has a ton of that, it's just... wrong. Really really good music, but wrong.

Speaking of songs I can't listen to, that came out right about the time mo chailín and I broke up back after college.
I saw Yo La Tengo last night at the 400 Club and even have a video of one of their slower songs to prove it. Unfortunately my work computer won't let me upload videos to YouTube. They were great. One minute they are playing this real soft song and you can actually hear a pin drop in the bar, then they go into a 20 minute(!) guitar feedback jam that practically rips your face off. Two sets, each set ended with a 20 minute guitar jam (plus another 10 minute jam in the second set). One would think that 20 minutes of face shredding guitar feedback would be self-indulgent, but it was a glorious rock and roll moment. They play again tonight at the 400 and if anyone wants to go (AMR, Hungry Joe, Can of Corn?) I think there are still tickets and could be talked into it (even though I'm still feeling the affects of the vodka).

I've been listening to this Frank Ocean you tipped me to, after I praised the Weeknd. Then I read this review in Pitchfork that draws a comparison between the two:
Not perfect, but yeah, the Weeknd has given up on being redeemable or even human, while Ocean maintains his humanity and wants to improve (sometime). And their instrumentals reflect this.
I actually like The Weeknd better than Frank Ocean, but this is a good parallel.
I would agree. The Weeknd floored me within 30 seconds (to the point where I had to post on "Wicked Games" here), while Ocean is growing on me. But I like what he's doing, too.
