Twins: Kennys Vargas (Mayaguez) was 1-for-3 with a walk. Eddie Rosario (Mayaguez) was 0-for-3. Daniel Ortiz (Mayaguez) was 0-for-3.
Ponce: Jesmuel Valentin (Dodgers) was 2-for-4 with a run. Jon Garcia (Dodgers) was 1-for-1 with a two-run homer. Giancarlo Alvarado pitched six innings, giving up one run on two hits and two walks with three strikeouts.
Mayaguez: Hiram Burgos (Milwaukee) struck out four in three shutout innings, allowing one hit and one walk.
The game: Mayaguez scored in the first on a sacrifice fly. It looked for a while as if that run might hold up. In the eighth, however, Garcia hit a pinch-hit two-run homer to give Mayaguez the lead. Jordan Lennerton (Detroit) made it back-to-back homers with a solo shot. Mayaguez did not get a man past first base after that.
CAROLINA 8, CAGUAS 2 IN CAROLINA
Caguas: Luis Atilano pitched 3.1 innings, giving up one run on two hits and one walk with three strikeouts.
Carolina: Enrique Hernandez (Houston) was 2-for-5 with a home run (his second) and three RBIs. Shuhei Fukuda was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs. Orlando Alfonso pitched six innings, allowing one run on five hits and three walks with five strikeouts.
The game: Hernandez hit a two-run homer in the third to give Carolina a 2-1 lead. Hernandez singled in an insurance run in the fifth. Carolina put the game away with five in the eighth, Fukuda capping the rally with a two-run double.
