I'm out in the suburbs, and with all the recent snowfalls, I've noticed that no one is shoveling the sidewalk in front of their house. Just their driveway and path to their front door. So, that means I'm cool to ignore it, right?

So the wife and I are at our favorite post-run burger joint yesterday (she the Green Flash IPA, me the Six Point IPA, and up on one of the TV screens they are showing overviews of earlier super-bowls.
I see a flash of purple on the screen, and suddenly a wave of nostalgia hits as Bud Grant with his steely blue eyes comes out of the team bus, followed by Marshall, Page, Eller, etc. Looking good, boys, like they just walked off the set of Soul Train. Suits with huge lapels, I'm talking Fro's, baby, you get the picture. This was the fun part of Minnesota vs. Miami.
Then the misery began. No first downs in the first 24 minutes for the good guys. The Dolphins are reading the minds of the Viking defense according to our chronicler, accompanied by charts showing where the Miami fox was able to outsmart the Queen defense. And Chuck Foreman can't get a seat on the Mega Bus. They keep playing the Dolphin completions and the Tarkenton sacks.
Luckily for us someone else in the bar requested the golf channel.
I've yet to have a Six Point that wasn't fantastic. Makes sense because the head brewer previously brewed at the now defunct Angelic in Madison along with the guy who is now head brewer at the amazing Ale Asylum.
fwiw, I was talking to a Sierra Nevada rep at Costco yesterday. Seems that SN is opening an East Coast brewery this summer. In celebration, they are holding beer fests all across the country AND releasing (in July) a special twelver of mashups with various breweries. Amongst the partners I can recall: Victory, Bell's, New Glarus. Several other notables that aren't coming to me at the moment.
That sounds like a good time. I'll have to be on the lookout for some of those.
I coached my son's basketball team yesterday. The opposing coach was Bud's son and two of his grandsons were on the team.
A friend of mine told me I should convince him the game is the Super Bowl and we'd win for sure.
When I was at UMD Bud's son Bruce was on the football team.
I can already tell the columnists in Minnesota are going to love tearing Sano down.
Holy crap, his quote about a desire to mash tasters and take walks made my heart swoon a bit.
Nothing wrong with having high goals, as long as you don't let it get you into bad habits.
Paging RhuRu.
Last night I found a deal that I just couldn't pass up. My wife and I were shopping at Goodwill, something we often like to do. At the checkout, I discovered that they had a full box of unopened 1990 Score brand baseball cards. For only 3 bucks. I have NO clue what's in them, in fact I'm a little afraid to open them. However, knowing that some people will pay good money for baseball cards, I couldn't pass up a whole box of them for only 3 bucks.
So, Rhu, I'm looking for some advice. Where's the best place to go to get the best deal? Should I leave them unopened. Hawk 'em on ebay? Other thoughts (besides giving them to you :-)). Never done anything like this before.
Thanks in advance
I was kind of curious about something like this too. I received about 15 or so unopened card packs from various brands and years for xmas, but haven't opened them yet. Certainly not expecting anything, but was unsure of what to do with them regardless.
They're little better than the paper they're printed on, sorry to say. Pretty much everything from 1984-1993 or so are from what's affectionately called "The Junk Wax Years." Still, the kids will enjoy the thrill of opening them.
My mother (now passed) said she had a cardboard box of my baseball cards in the attic (mostly from when I lived in the Canal Zone, 1968-71'ish timeframe). I had some good names (not many Twins, I was into the Orioles at the time), including an airborne Cookie Rojas.
Problem is we used those cards with clothespins on our bike spokes.
Yeah, I had lots of '71s and later, and a few had writing on the back, pin holes where they were tacked to the bulletin board, and edge wear from rubberbands. I've long since gotten over what they might have been worth otherwise; heck, we had fun with them, and that's what counts.
Just talked with my brother Coot about that Cookie Rojas card- had a good laugh.
He was just out snow-plowing in Oakdale, MN wearing the RCMP cross fox fur hat I had gotten for him in Quebec. He sent me a photo of him in his fur hat. I sent him the same picture of me snowplowing the driveway in my muskrat RCMP hat.
everyone and their uncle (including my uncle, with 12 mint condition Warren Spahn rookie cards thrown away) has a story about losing or not taking care of their pre junk wax years cards. I imagine if everyone and their uncle took perfect care of them, they wouldn't be worth much more than the paper they're printed on either.
The LCS* owner here has a theory that BB cards picked up steam due to the Vietnam War; when guys either were drafted, went to college, or headed to Canada, their box of cards were left at home at the mercies of others.

"mercy of others" == Mom
My uncle joined the Navy, lost all his cards.
so, the Runner got left in the Stink Hole. Literally.

Of course I get four 4's on the last hand, and of course it leaves me short.
mwahahaha. Pegging two points saves my bacon.
an oldie, but a goodie. From a friend's bookface wall today:
To make a long story short, we bought a car yesterday. The clutch on the truck is nearly dead and we needed another dependable vehicle. We ended up getting a 2008 Toyota Camry, 69,000 miles. Just the 2.4L four cylinder, but it should get decent mileage and make for a good commuter car. Mrs. Twayn and Younger Daughter will share the van for a few months, and when it warms up I'll replace the clutch on the truck and get it back on the road.
Your last sentence saved my faith in humanity, and in the Twayn Signal.
What this amateur mechanic wrote in his LTE will restore your faith in humanity by the fifth sentence!
i think i've seen that on my feed before.
