I'm trying out two new albums this week:
1. Cymbals Eat Guitars, Lose. Based on several folk's recommendation. Or maybe just Zack over 3 platforms. I'm not fully into it yet, but it definitely seems like something Zack and Nibbish would be into. One song always makes me think it's by Jane's Addiction.
2. The Bug, Angels & Devils. Based on the awesomeness that is Kevin Martin (The Bug, half of Techno Animal, part of Ice), and in particular the singles from the prior album from the Bug, London Zoo. The new album's highs aren't quite as high as the prior album's highs, and it's lows are so low. Gonjasufi's vocals on "Save Me" might be the worst thing from Martin, until three tracks later when the Death Grips are featured on "F--- a B----". Now I've never listened to Death Grips, and they've got good press, so maybe there's some schtick I'm missing. But their vox here make the vocal versions from Two Fingers (a similar project from Amon Tobin) sound good. I can't even tell if Martin's beat is any good. It's too bad, because "This One" ft. Flowdan is pretty great (though it sounds less like Martin and more like Two Fingers), and some of the other tracks are intriguing, with featured vox from Liz Harris (Grouper) and Warrior Queen. I just need to delete this Death Grips collab from my iPod.

    Last night saw the Buzzcocks as the first night of my "Aging Hipster Triple Crown." It was a little weird seeing guys in their mid-50s singing teenage I'm-awkward-at-love songs but they did absolutely rock. Fun night. Tonight is the Dandy Warhols who I'm not a huge fan but have heard good stuff about their live shows. I will definitely need a nap tomorrow before the Replacements.

    1. I saw Megadeth in Washington, D.C. the summer of 1986. It was a wildly fun show. Unbeknownst to me a woman I had designs on waitressed at the place where Megadeth played. She lost any of the little interest she had in me when she saw me at that show.

      1. Doesn't sound like a woman worth getting to know, then.

        Also, all instances of the national anthem at sporting events should be done by Dave Mustaine.

    1. I think that was the first Pumpkins song I heard.
      Youth ministry director at the Cathedral had a tape that someone had made for him at his previous gig, with like 4 songs each from 4 different bands.
      I liked the name of the band and was curious. The four songs were "I Am One", "Rhinoceros", "Siva" and "Crush".

    6. "Nnnaaammm" is both onomatopœia and an acronym of "New No New Age Advanced Ambient Motor Music Machine".
    9. Breaking up the run of German artists. Forgettable R&B single that I sampled for my summer mix that was never finished.

    1. Frozen

      The boy started singing "Let It Go". I have absolutely no idea where he would have picked it up (he's only a bit over 3 now). It's like an enterovirus or something.

      1. Oh man, I didn't fully grasp the power of Disney until recently. The jalapeno saw a bit of Frozen over at a neighbor boy's house and came back talking about "the Let It Go song." Just one listen, and he was hooked. We'd listen to it on YouTube every so often, and over Labor Day weekend decided to just by the darn movie already. (But we're pretty strict on his screen time, so what he sees is still limited.)

        And now . . . he brings up Elsa daily. The other day he was styling my hair so that I would look "pretty like Elsa." Thanks, kid.

        All of which to say, AMR if I get the Frozen frozen soundtrack for my kid, will it be okay or will I regret it? (I don't mean to denigrate music for kids generally, it's just that I'm intimidated by the Disney-industrial complex.)

        1. My mini experiment in allowing unlimited access to playing "Everything is Awesome" was a huge success. I heard that song over and over and over for about three days. Now it has been more than a month since I last heard it.

          1. I should try that. The trinket has unlimited endurance when it comes to repeating songs/movies over and over and "Everything is Awesome" would be better for me than any Disney song.

            1. Yeah, I admit I was tired of it but there are worse songs they could wear out. I may even want to listen to it in a year or two.

              BTW, I tried unlimited access to screen time, but that was a miserable failure. I had to walk that one back a little when they started trying to skip meals to play on the IPad.

            2. You are absolutely wrong.
              I know from experience.

              The songs from Frozen were actual songs.
              "Everything is Awesome" is just like two lines over and over and over.
              It's like that George Harrison song.

        2. It's OK. I dislike the unpopular songs "Love Is an Open Door" and "Fixer Upper", but the kids aren't that into them, either.
          So really, it's like 7 songs + 1 radio-single re-recording + Like 2 pieces of score that stand out.

          But, the mix you get from those seven songs vs "Everything is awesome! Everything is cool when you're part of a team!" ad infinitum, is probably worth it.
          Plus, by getting the CD, we were able to break the connection with the youtube videos, and reduce screen time.
          The girls still sing "Let It Go" from time to time, but it's when they're off away in their own thoughts.

      2. This discussion reminded me of a mix-tape project I needed to finish for Kernel. See list...not so sure I actually want to burn it now, seeing it all together like that.

  9. I have spent the last three days with Karen O’s “Crush Songs” on repeat. I almost can’t handle it. I feel like a junkie who was just given the most sublimely pure narcotic ever devised. I’ve already bought it once but I’m probably going to spend $50 to get it on vinyl and I don’t even own a record player.

    1. I hear ya. I find myself going on these deep musical binges. GBV is an obvious one that I have to watch myself. In July I discovered The Bevis Frond and spent like 5 days listening to anything I could get my hands on.
