April 11, 2018: Scenarios

Here's how the scenarios for tonight's basketball game break down:

To quote Dumbledore, "I've got a bad feeling about this."

  1. So last nights game and puppy party got me thinking. How did the puppies images at the end of a Twins victory originate? Was it on the old site?

I tried searching for it, but honestly I am pretty bad at that sort of thing. Might make for a good series of articles. "Origins"

      1. Yup, the puppies came from the Old Basement.

I love the idea of “Origins” posts. A good time to revisit the genesis of the lexicon.

        1. Agreed. I ask every six months where Rifding Hokme (sp?) came from, because I always forget.

              1. I've always attributed the puppies to bootsy as well.

RE: Mark's Towing, my wife and daughter returned from a spring break trip to AZ to find their battery dead ... at midnight on a Friday. I get a call, wake the sleeping 3-year-old, drive down to the airport and am unable to jump the thing. Arranged for a tow truck to meet us at the parking ramp the following morning (9 am). The young man is early, professional, helpful and patient. I have to pay for her parking, his parking and mine in order to get out of the ramp/lot, and he knows more about the process than the cashier. Again, he's patient and polite. Drive all the way back to the WBL/Maplewood area - me following him - to the dealership. He drives competently and responsibly, is courteous to other drivers and makes sure not to lose me along the way.

My only complaint is on me ... I didn't have cash to tip him for the great work. I called the service that afternoon and complimented his performance.

                1. I actually did use MTIE several years after they left me stranded on Highway 62 in sub-zero temperatures ON MY BIRTHDAY. They did a fine job.

                  1. I'm glad to see this. Your birthday experience comes to mind whenever I see roadside assistance. Ugh.

              2. That was mine. It was actually a random spur of the moment edit from something I'd already posted. I'd found a photo of some fireworks rather tastelessly named after an act the Russians may or may not have video of the 45th POTUS witnessing, but as soon as I posted it, I regretted it. Family site, and all. Panicking, I saw that puppy picture on my desktop and quickly loaded the image to a picture hosting site. I then used the newly implemented editing tool and swapped out the images. I believe cheaptoy called me on the switch but I played dumb--something that comes naturally for me. The rest, as they say, is history.

                1. and now you know... the rest of the story.

Thanks for the origin story on our puppies!

                2. ahh, damn, i totally should have remembered that. you'll have to have an extensive interview on the upcoming "Behind The Jargon" series.

        2. I thought it was probably the Old Basement, as I have vivid memories of sitting at my desk in our master bedroom on my PC leaning back on my chair to watch the game and then periodically comment on game logs. I think it was 7-8 years ago that I retired the PC and switched totally to lap tops.

Also, in my pathetic search effort, I read through some 2012 posts and just about everyone who commented back then is still around. I truly do cherish this place. Such a healthy distraction from the grind of "real life".

  2. Dumbledore?

    Hahahahaha!

That clearly was Captain James T. Kirk on the bridge of the USS Serenity, trying to make the Kessel Run!

      1. I think Gandalf said, “Sometimes you have to roll the hard six.” before entering the Temple of the Sun to retrieve the humpback whales smuggling schematics for the Death Star.

  3. Don't feel like creating a poll. So just curious if people want the Wolves to win or lose tonight. Because I'm ambivalent, though admittedly not a huge basketball fan. I just know Thibs annoys me and don't want him ruining KAT's career.

      1. And will a loss even lead to pitching Thibs...or will Taylor double down and throw the players under the bus

        1. Considering how long Thibs contract is, there's zero chance he gets fired this year. Glen ain't paying that much for a fired coach (and you know he'll take the "Butler was injured down the stretch" excuse anyway).

That said, there is a very real possibility they could play the Jazz in the first round. I would almost certainly be rooting for the Jazz in that scenario.

            1. I want Rubio to hit, like, 8 threes right in Teague's face, and another 4 from the corner with Thibs right next to him.

              1. I don't blame Teague for anything. He's a quality NBA player with real strengths (and weaknesses). I just wouldn't have traded Ricky and then signed Teague for more.

                1. I don't blame Teague, either, I just want Ricky to rub it in Thib's face as much as possible. Doing it over his "scoring PG" would be amazing to watch.

          1. I agree 100% with this take, the Butler injury provides enough cover for Thibs and it is unlikely Taylor is willing to spend the money anyway.

    1. I gotta be honest, there's a certain amount of schadenfreude to be had just from this site if the Wolves lose...

That said, I want all 4 of the major men's teams to make the playoffs within the same sports year. That'd be pretty cool, especially when coupled with the Super Bowl and Lynx championship. A real good sportsing year.

      1. I wonder if all three/four teams have made the playoffs in the same season. It hasn't happened while the Wolves were around. Looks like the 1969(-1970) and 1970(-1971) seasons had all three teams make the playoffs. I can't find any other years that match, but I haven't been rigorous about it.

    2. I want the Wolves to win, and I'm hoping the Spurs win so they get the 7th (or 6th) seed. I love Jimmy, but Thibs basically pitched the two most fun players (imo; LaVine & Rubio) to "win now." So not getting to the playoffs would be a huge disappointment. Having two draft picks would be okay, but I don't trust GM Thibs to draft quality players, and I don't trust coach Thibs to play them anyway. I just hope that they can find a way to keep Butler and KAT and not keep Thibs long term. I can't stand him.

      1. I'm with wattsy.

My fear (bordering on prognostication) is that the Wolves make the playoffs, ensuring Thibs stays, but get trounced and the young players are blamed. Bjelica opts for free agency, & another year under Thibs results in little progress so Teague & Butler (2019-20 are player option years, I think) roll, followed by Tyus & KAT as soon as they can (... 2019 & 2020?) leaving the Wolves with Wiggins on a max deal and a roster filled out with mid-round selections and veterans who couldn't get jobs elsewhere.

        1. leaving the Wolves with Wiggins on a max deal and a roster filled out with mid-round selections and veterans who couldn't get jobs elsewhere.

          Mark it down.

      2. I agree but it would also be pretty great to lose a hard-fought last game of the season and then improbably win the lottery, just to stick it to all the teams purposely tanking.

    3. I want them to win and make the playoffs. I'd like them to avoid the Rockets. I fear that they will lose.

    4. Tough for me to get too down on Thibs yet... yet. I definitely have issues with some of the personnel moves and with the under utilization of KAT. However, I remember the incredible level of suckiness we just suffered through. I give him one more year before I break out my own pitchfork and torch. I want them to make the playoffs. I want them to have a good showing. My hope is that we don't stand pat in the off season and continue to make some moves. This comes from a distant observer who just hasn't been able to get into the NBA for a long, long time.

    1. Wish I could take you up on this. Joe had 3+ hits in ~10% of his games last year ... would be awesome to be on hand for career hit # 2000.

  4. I think I know why the winter feels so long. So yeah, we get March and April snows, but on a normal year the temps bounce back and the snow melts and life goes on. This year, its snow and then temps barely make it to 40 degrees until the next snow so all the drifts and snow mountains are still mostly there, and have been added on since the last snow. Give me some 50 degree days!

    1. My yard gets quite a bit of sun and it has been clear only a couple days, and that was after we did a lot of work to break up ice to speed up the melt.

The stretch of below-normal temps (some way below) is driving me crazy.

Once all the snow finally melts, we could really use a 50 degree day with some rain to wash off the roads. Really noticed how dirty the highway is heading downtown this morning.

      1. I didnt see that tweet until now. Glad the cool temp thing is an actual thing and not my mind playing tricks on me.

  5. I have a ton of snow yet (house faces North). I left the state this AM. I'm in B-Town and the temperature was 38 this morning. Felt warm. Sigh.
