      1. I think his argument for taking the card but not ejecting the pitcher is good. Ejecting him would have been over the top, but a cheat sheet is a foreign object, so against the letter of the law. And baseball generally loves the letter of the law.

        1. I think that's a very strained reading of the rule. You can argue that it's not technically wrong, but there's no way the rule was written with something like that in mind.

          1. Also, if Joe West is so concerned with the letter of the law, he needs to go back and read the definition of the "strike zone".

          2. I mean, sure it’s strained but there also isn’t anything that says pitchers are allowed to have cheat sheets. In the absence of a specific provision allowing it, I think it’s not unreasonable to disallow as a foreign object.

Also, as much as I am for analytics, I am also for rewarding smart players and I personally hate the idea that they are out there with cheat sheets. Study your opponent, know your opponent, but get out of here with cheat sheets.

            1. Apparently, MLB says it's okay. I wouldn't necessarily be opposed to a rule banning them. But I think it's more reasonable to say "If they're not specifically prohibited they're okay" rather than to say, "If they're not specifically allowed they're banned", especially when we're not talking about a foreign substance that's applied to the ball. The rule makers can't think of everything.

            2. I agree - this is penalizing the smart pitchers that do their homework and rewarding Yankees pitchers who have 100 years of analytics printed on a microdot glued to the logo on their glove.

This isn't all that different than QBs with plays on their armbands, which makes me dislike it even more.

    1. Cubs manager Joe Maddon seemed to get a kick out of the situation.

"I think the scouting report may have been written on the back of an emery board," Maddon said, before pausing.

      😆

  1. I won't have time to get Minor Details done this morning, but Fort Myers' game starts at 11:00 a.m. Central. If they win, they make the playoffs. If they lose and Charlotte also loses, they make the playoffs. It's Sunday--what better day to pray for a Miracle?

Elizabethton's game with Kingsport--the deciding game of their best-of-three series--starts at 5:00 Central.

    1. Sorry, that's wrong. Fort Myers is a game back. They need to win and have Charlotte lose to make the playoffs.

  2. A lady that I work with said that her high schooler son said that the Hooters by them was closing down because Millenials aren't into
    boobs.

  3. Did B-ref just do some big park adjustment or something? All the Twins hitters seem to have increased their OPS+ by 15-20 points today and pitchers have gone the opposite way on ERA+. Suddenly even Berrios and Gibson have ERA+s under 100 and suddenly Mauer/Kepler/Garver are up 15-20% above average hitters. WAR changed quite a bit as well with this jump. I think Mauer was .8 yesterday and is now at 1.7

    1. Yep.

  4. Fort Myers leads Clearwater 2-1 going to the bottom of the seventh. Unfortunately, Charlotte has just taken a 1-0 lead over Florida and is still batting in the bottom of the sixth.

    1. Fort Myers still leads 2-1 going to the bottom of the eighth. It may not matter, though, as Charlotte leads Florida 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh.

  5. Fort Myers defeats Clearwater 2-1, so they've done their part. Jordan Rogers hit a two-run homer in the eighth for Florida, so the Fire Frogs lead Charlotte 3-2 going to the ninth. If that holds, the Miracle goes to the playoffs.

    1. Florida has scored two more in the ninth and is still batting. The Fire Frogs now lead Charlotte 5-2.

  6. Fourth day post-surgery. You develop a new appreciation for all of the things your lower abdominal muscles do for you when it really, really hurts to use them. This is why Milk of Magnesia is my new best friend. I'm weaning off of the Percocet since I only have four of five left, and at this point Advil and ice seem to be just as effective anyway, although I worry about taking so much Advil for so long. On the bright side, Elder Daughter took pity on me and brought her boyfriend over yesterday to mow the yard. I'm hoping to parley that into having them rake up all of the acorns next weekend, but we'll see how it goes.

      1. Still 1-1 in the fifth. I have to leave now, and probably won't be back until it's over. I'll provide an update then. Or, you can find out for yourself. You don't, after all, have to wait for me.

        1. I'm back, and the game's not over. Gilberto Celestino delivered a two-run single in the fifth to put the Twins up 3-1. The Mets got one back in the sixth on a Domingo Martinez single to make it 3-2. The Twins scored on a sacrifice fly in the seventh to make it 4-2 and Yunior Severino singled home a run in the eighth to make it 5-2. Kingsport is batting in the ninth.

            1. And a fly out ends the game. Elizabethton wins 5-2 and takes the series 2-1!

In the other playoff series, Princeton defeated Bluefield to win that series 2-1. So, Elizabethton will take on Princeton for the league title in a best-of-three series. I'm not sure when it starts. The Appalachian League schedule says it starts Wednesday, but the E-Twins broadcaster says it starts Tuesday. I guess we'll find out eventually. Certainly by Wednesday.
