1979, Newport Jazz Festival. I couldn't do a bS week this soon after Brubeck's passing without at least a nod in his direction. Plus, you know, trombone solo!

I don't know if this jam has a name. And I don't care.

And now for some drummer jokes after the jump.

I loves me some classical guitar. I've mentioned this before, but one of the formative cultural experiences of my childhood was going to the then-pretty-new Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis to see Julian Bream (it had to have been 1974 or 1975). brotherS and I sat in the nosebleed seats, separate from our parents, as they were unable to get four tickets together. We dressed up in our Sunday best for the show and were warned on pain-of-death not to so much as cough. And we went out to a real Chinese restaurant (i.e., silverwear and china dishes, not plastic and styrofoam) beforehand. Also, Julian Bream and I share a birthdate, so that's cool too.

Short and sweet. I'm more of a Neil guy, but this song is one of my favorites.
Yea, baby, I'm back. And you're asking for it.

This song takes me back to my youth. I can remember singing along to the chorus while my folks drove us to Itasca state park one summer. I had no idea how sad this song really was.

that said, dave brubeck, in all his incarnations, is (not was) one of my favorite jazz musicians. he seemed to have this mad scientist approach to jazz; this strange mathematical deconstruction of the music. an innovator in key structure and time signatures (i'm still not 100% sure which time this is in... 6/8?), he deserves all the credit he received and will receive in the coming days.
here's a cut from the quintessential brubeck album time out. you will be missed.
