1. In Boston, Bosok Josh Reddick hits a one-out triple. Ortiz comes to bat and takes offense to Kevin Gregg pitching him way inside. After Ortiz flies out, Gregg taunts him a bit, and Ortiz charges the mound. Benches (and bullpens?) clear. After the dust settles and ejections are made, Showalter (correctly) appeals to the umps that Reddick abandoned his base during the kerfuffle* and therefore was out. I was very curious to see how it made the boxscore:

   Was there an actual throw? Did Adam Jones get a free Outfield Assist? I know catchers get assigned all sorts of putouts, so that really doesn't bother me.

   *barely a fight or a mêlée, more than a confrontation.

   1. I could see how Reddick could get an assist, being the last to touch the live ball prior to throwing it in to the pitcher (assuming no other infielder touched the ball, which I doubt), but usually with an appeal the pitcher throws to the base where the appeal is made. Unless even that isn't required in this circumstance.

   2. I didnt know about/never thought about the players leaving base during a fight rule

      that said, the BoSox are whiny little babies. 'oh no, they were TRYING to throw inside on us when we are winning by 8. HOW DARE THEY! Please

      1. I knew it was a rule, but I never thought that it would be applied during a quarrel*. I've typically only thought of it in context of "if you think you're out and you leave base like you're out, you are out, even if you never were called out."

         *a disagreement, yeah an argument.

            1. Rhubarb is a vegetable, eaten as a fruit.

               1. It's also one of the words inexperienced background actors are asked to use onstage when there's hubbub in a crowded scene.

         2. Usually these will happen in dead ball situations (HBP). If the runner abandons his effort while the ball is dead, there can be no penalty.

            Here is as good a place as any to state the reason I'm not around any more is because I am working as an umpire in upstate NY.

            1. Are you in that Compton-based umpiring school?! Hell, it's dangerous to be an umpire anywhere, let alone Compton.

               If not, where are you umpiring? At what level? How hard is it to judge the placement of a good breaking ball?

               1. It seems that the Compton umpire school is in Compton, CA, so I doubt he's at that one.

                  1. Oh. I always wondered why a school full of fat people was sitting in a city where you're constantly running from gunfire.

                     1. I bet the fat part happens after they leave because they no longer have to run around so much.

                        1. The bulletproof vests under the chest protectors are not very slimming, though

               2. A good breaking ball? Not that bad. A good knuckle? Extremely difficult. Luckily i've only seen two. The back door breaking balls can be difficult at times, since you will notice umpires line up on the inside corner.

            2. It hadn't dawned on me that if he would have touched home before joining the scrum, he would have scored.
               Maybe he should be out for running out of baseline or interference or anything. (I still don't understand why it's an 8-2 putout.)

               1. That's an interesting way to score. Tie game, bottom of the ninth with a runner on third (or maybe even second), and a fly out too short for the runner to score. Instigate a bench clearing and then the runner goes home during the confusion and touches home plate, making sure the home umpire sees him score.

                  1. just make sure no one calls time beforehand. I can't believe time hadn't been called prior in the the Indians/Sox game

                     1. That's confusing to me as well. He must have darted off 3rd darn quick.

                  2. I'd assume that in that instance, the ump would try to suss out that it was orchestrated to allow the run to score, and put him back on base somewhere. (A walk-off brawl is an abomination and I believe something like that would fall into ump's discretion, which I know they have some of.)

                     1. so how do we program that discretion into the robots?

                        1. There has to be a human top ump that covers things like this and determining when Gardy has said the robo-ump equivalent to the magic words. ("Go Defrag yourself"?)

               2. Hola would not be out for running out of the baseline. That is only applicable when a play is being made on him.

                  1. Please come back often, I have tons of questions about this type of baseball legalese.

                     Jones must have made a throw to the infield quickly, Reddick at least needed to be held.
                     The NESN broadcast did not really show what happens to the runner or the ball, turning instead to the dispute.

   3. Heh. Yeah, I just watched this. Ortiz and Gregg are both definitely getting suspended for this. They both also need to work on their MMA skills.

      1. Ortiz needs to work on making sure his teammates get to the brawl quicker so he doesn't look like a pansy.

2. Crashed on my couch around 9:30, which I think was right after the Twins took the lead (damn was that a slow game to whatever point it was when I fell asleep).

   I just woke up and pulled up mlb.com for the highlights and I let it keep playing through to the Thursday night highlights. So I saw all of Mauer's assists and put-outs at 1B. Maybe I've never paid this kind of attention to 1B defense before, but it sure looks like he has a lot of catcher in him how he shows the 1B ump (Brian Gorman) that he has the ball after each put-out.

4. I went mountain biking last night along the Minnesota River bottoms and had a nice head-over-handlebars wipeout. A couple of minor scrapes and wounded pride. I wake up this morning and have a bump on my thigh just above the knee about the size of a golf ball.

   1. I did an over-the-top on on our snowmobile back in the day that left a fist-sized goose egg on the middle of my right chin. Thank God it happened in cold weather, although you have to go indoors (and allow feeling back) eventually.

      1. You have right and left chins? Even for double chins, that's not normal. 🙂

         1. I sure do! It does all my spell checking for me, too.

   1. Oh, that's awesome. For a while I wondered what was so spectacular about it, but then I got there.

      1. I love how it doesn't shout it, but there's no mistaking the point.

   2. I did not realize that Reyes had such a phenomenal season.
      (No cable means no cable means that other than teams the Twins faced during interleague, the NL is dead to me.)

      1. I watch a fair share of NL games, but I rarely bother with the Mets unless they're playing the Rockies, so I didn't know he was crushing it to that extent either. Up to now, he's been a little overrated in my eyes what with an unimpressive OBP.

8. Just posted a little trade package that arrived yesterday. It had a few recent Killebrew cards in it, and I absolutely love the photo in the Upper Deck card on the top left.

9. The Cap'n just hit a homerun to left field for his 3,000th hit. You will be told of this 5,000 times in the next 5 days.

   1. Oh, gawd. I will not visit any sports-related sites besides this one for the next five days. Or years.

      1. It can still be redeemed if Jeter goes like 0-22 in a playoff series loss to the Twins

      2. I doubt the SSS will dwell on it much.

10. I passed my exam. Needed 97 out of 150 questions correct. I spent 90 minutes of the test period agonizing over my answers, and only changed one of them. I got 134.
