  1. Sounders-specific notes: I'll be attending the USOC final tomorrow night, hoping for the three-peat. Going back to USL, the Sounders have 5 consecutive USOC semifinal appearances and 3 consecutive finals appearances. The draw against Communicaciones in the CCL ensured that the Sounders advance out of their group into the quarterfinals, which won't be until early March. (Hoping Keller will stick around for that, he was slated to retire.) Despite the win at New England (with the Sounders playing mostly reserves), LA's win over RSL essentially ensures that they'll take the Supporter's Shield, leaving the Sounders in 2nd or 3rd. (Probably 2nd since RSL lost.)

  2. Everton's Jack Rodwell got a straight red and the automatic three match ban for this tackle on Luis Suarez in the Merseyside derby:

Rodwell's three match ban has been recinded on appeal, which is one of the only instances of that happening I can remember.

    1. That's a pretty interesting situation. I can see a red card as deserved (especially from the ref's point of view at full speed), but I can also see where Rodwell tried to pull out of the tackle and it makes sense to lift the automatic three-match ban. I wish MLS had an automatic three-match ban for serious foul play and violent conduct red cards.

      1. I'm not sure where Atkinson is standing, but if he's behind Rodwell that looks a lot worse than from this angle. I wish that EPL/UEFA was more proactive in using video, both during play and after the fact. Rugby is a great at using video quickly and un-obtrusively during the match, and regularly review video of incidents to hand out bans. Also, I agree the MLS should take a harder stance against back tackles/violent conduct. There have been some horrendous incidents resulting in some bad injuries this year.
