Today's my brother's birthday. He's had the best and worst year of his life this year. Cheers, Nick.

The Nation Has Problems: Vol. 5
About Last Month
Both of these problems can be boiled down to well known combinatorial identities. However, if you're not familiar with them, they can still be tricky problems. Before reading the solutions, you should make sure you are familiar with binomial coefficients. I will use the notation C(n,k) here. This is also the same number of ways to pick k distinct objects from n things and hence is often said as "n choose k".

The goods start 21 seconds in.
While I do like country music probably more than anyone here, the genre doesn't typically hold my favorite songs. Thus, the whole week will not be about drinkin' and cheatin'. I do apologize. However, we will start with country and a soulful, personal song from somebody you've never heard of (and frankly, neither have I). This song was remade by Brad Paisley, and while Brad's voice is technically more proficient, it never feels like he lived the lyrics.
Hope you enjoy it, and hope to see you the rest of the week.

There do not appear to be any players with connections to the Minnesota Twins born on this day. The closest we come is Johnnie Seale, a pitcher drafted by the former Washington Senators in 1958, but he was out of the organization before the team moved to Minnesota.
November 14, 2011: Inefficiency
I just found out my company placed me - just ten days before the biggest day of the year - in one of the only two departments I'm not qualified to be in. I'm just dreading going in. I don't want to be the guy who customers see right through, knowing he can't help them.
November 13, 2011: Sick Kid
It's me and Sour Cream today. She's so stuffed up that she sounds like she's breathing through a respirator.
