Friday Music Day: March 16, 2012

I sure have been scarce around here, eh?
I had given up on following through the TWolves gamelogs weeks ago, but now I'm backlogged on Cups of Coffee.
I haven't watch NBB's music video week and I've probably written less than ten LTEs for the week.
Well, I'm still alive! Just busy. Baby and Work, mostly.

I'll put a random ten here later... but you should share yours first.

    1. Ah, "Little Lion Man." I'm so conflicted about Mumford. On the one hand, I don't hate them entirely. On the other hand, I do.

      1. I really disliked them when they first came out, but I think that was backlash against the hype. I've come around a bit more recently.

          1. I feel like a lot of their lyrics are just lazy. It's faux poetry, and badly written at that. I often find myself enjoying their music before it hits me that it's one of theirs, and then I feel bad for having liked it.

              1. Sounds like? Sure. Is? Sadly, I don't think so.

And I think that sums up my feelings about Mumford. They've brought all the intellectual heft and integrity of rock into bluegrass.

    1. I'm such a Cheap Trick Live at Budokan geek, that I have Budokan I (which everyone has) and II and then put the songs in order of the actual concert on my Ipod.

      1. Live at Budokan was on sale at my local record store on vinyl for $7.50 or $10 last summer. I ended up passing, regretting it, and going back. Of course in the 2-3 days someone else picked it up

      2. I came across it at my local library. Its an album I always wanted to listen to, but never wanted to pay the $15 Amazon was asking. So I picked it up and it was great and ripped it on my computer. A year later, I ended up buying it (as I do with most stuff I sample from the library) for $3 at a record store in Mankato.
I love that cover of 'Aint That A Shame'

    1. also, it looks like i found a pretty good deal on an old 120GB ipod. no more ipod austerity measures!

      1. I've been thinking about getting a used giant classic iPod. I've realized that neither Apple nor their competitors care about me and want to make a 64GB nano.

    2. Philosofette (and I) swear by "Shankhill Butchers" as one of the best Halloween songs ever.

  6. Hey, lookie here! I remembered to grab a random 10 before I left home this morning!

    "Salvation is Created" - Chesnokov

      1. My musical tastes range more towards "all-inclusive" than "good." Honestly, this random ten was taken from a computer that has only a limited selection of my music on it (sizable, but not the entire library by any stretch). It ended up a little tilted, but I'm not particularly embarrassed by anything on the list, so that's good.

        1. I'm with you on this. I'd never classify my taste in music as 'good'. My stuff ranges from mid-90's CCM to J-Pop to Guitar Rock to an alarmingly large collection of Video Game Music. My random 10s are usually culled from a specific playlist of stuff that I listen to a little more often, as putting up a bunch of stuff that I never listen to isn't really that interesting, and I don't have the guts to do one of MagUidir's annual purges.

  7. Last weekend, I bought a two 1/8" stereo-cable Y-splitters at Radio Shack: MM->F and M->FF. I've now got it set up at work that both my computer's audio and my iPod's audio both go to my computer screen's good speakers and some little crappy speakers that I also used to use. Quadrophenic sound!

This list started on my commute. Sounded good enough that I figured I'd use it today

    1. Bonnie “Prince” Billy “Where Is the Puzzle?” Lie Down in the Light*
    2. Steve Reich “Come Out (Ken Ishii Remix)”* Reich Remixed
    3. Sonic Youth “Starfield Road”* Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star
    4. James Blackshaw “Boo, Forever” Holly EP
    5. Tristen* “Wicked Heart” Charlatans at the Garden Gate

    6. Neko Case “Don't Forget Me” Middle Cyclone*
    7. Meat Puppets “Amazing” Lollipop
    8. Zola Jesus “Lick the Palm of the Burning Handshake”* Conatus
    9. Meat Puppets “Town” Lollipop
    T. Bobby Bare Jr. “A Storm — A Tree — My Mother's Head” A Storm — A Tree — My Mother's Head

    B. Scout Niblett “Kiss (with Will Oldham)”* This Fool Can Die Now

    *Notes:
    1. At first I didn't dig it that much (the first song sounds weird), but this is probably my favorite album from Will Oldham, and this my favorite song from it. And now I'm worrying that he'll never release another album to challenge its place in my heart.

    2. By far the best remix on this remix collection. Most did little for me, but this one always grabs me, even though it isn't Reichian, it samples long segments of “Come Out” and applies a stripped-down bass and percussion to it (mostly a ringing cymbal crash). It's intriguing and teases at some of the results of Reich's early vocal phase work while creating a new piece. A good balance of reverence for the original and an attempt to make something new and good out of it.** I haven't listened to that much of what Ishii has done (one album and two EPs: he makes some decent techno, but it's not phenomenal by any means), but I haven't heard anything near this good from.

    3. In concert, if "Bull in the Heather" is ever played, they'll follow up with this. It's like they're really parts 1 and 2 of the same song.

    5. Tristen in Opening for Justin Townes Earle at the Varsity Theater on Monday, May 7. I'm very interested in going. She's not the greatest, but her songs have really grown on me. Plus, I find her Twitter avatar to be really attractive.

    6. After seeing her name listed in a bunch of Lydia Loveless reviews, and upon seeing this CD at the library, I figured I'd check her out. First, I don't see the LL comparison: is it because they both have red hair? Second, this album hasn't really done much for me. Third, I can't seem to get the final bonus track of 32 minutes of crickets off my iPod.

    8. Unfortunate title.

    B. When doing late-night feedings for the baby, I put in one earbud and listen to my iPod. This came on last night. I haven't heard it in months. One of my favorite songs ever... I want to share. This is one of the few songs where EAR is happy to hear Oldham's voice; Niblett's drives her nuts. "Nails on a Chalkboard." I disagree. You can decide, here's the video:
    httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0uDlvl7jNn8

    1. I am a fan of Neko Case's solo work (she's also a member of The New Pornographers). In particular I would recommend the album Fox Confessor Brings the Flood. I can say though that I don't know the song of which you speak and that artsy thing that leads to a track of crickets is just obnoxious.

      1. Although I've stated my disdain for The New Pornographers, it doesn't extend to Neko Case. She is both quite fetching and a lovely singer.

        1. When I saw the New Pornographers a few years ago, it was one of the tours without Neko & Dan Behar. There was some other girl (who looked nothing at all like Ms. Case) in the band instead. That didn't stop some jack ass behind me from yelling "NEEEEKOOOOOO! NEEEEEEEEEEEEEKOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" all night.

      2. I really like the song "Behind the House", but I've had trouble really getting into most of her other solo stuff. It's probably lack of effort on my part, as the times when I listened to Middle Cyclone or Fox Confessor Brings the Flood, I could tell right away that the reason I wasn't getting into it had more to do with the mood I was in at the time than the music itself.

        1. I can totally see that. Fox Confessor is definitely a "specific mood" album for me. It's absolutely perfect when I'm in the right mood, but otherwise it's just kind of background, at best.

  8. 1. Windmills of Your Mind -- Dusty Springfield
    2. Look What You've Done Fro Me -- Al Green
    3. Act of the Apostle II -- Belle and Sebastian
    4. Ocean Size -- Jane's Addiction
    5. Little Mascara -- The Replacements
    6. 7 Strokes to Heaven's Edge (demo)
    7. Don't Dictate -- The Penetration
    8. Fathers & Sins -- The Magnolias**
    9. Get Back -- The Beatles
    10. From Me to You -- The Beatles

Bonus: I Invented the Moonwalk (demo) -- Guided By Voices

** This is a great anti Hank Williams Jr. song. With the chorus basically Die, Junior Die.

    1. 1. Windmills of Your Mind -- Dusty Springfield
Reminds me I need to dig out my Dusty in Memphis album. I have been meaning to since I saw Adele preform the song 'Rolling In the Deep' at the Grammys. To me, it sounds like a song from the Dusty Springfield catalog.

      1. Definitely dig it out. It's one of those "foundational albums" that everyone should be familiar with regardless of musical tastes.

        1. Yes!

"You're gonna wish you - never had met me." the background vocals encapsulate the song's anger better than the lead does (not that the lead doesn't do a great job in that song, too... I'm quite a fan of "Rolling in the Deep", as well as most of that CD).

    2. You ever hear Bobby Bare Jr's cover of "Ocean Size"? I love it.
BBJ could quit writing music and become the world's greatest cover artist. (Until Prince follows that career path.)
This is the only link I can find with a sound sample.

  9. Here we go:

    01. The Knife - "Still Light" from Silent Shout
    02. Cold Cave - "Life Magazine" from Love Comes Close
    03. Sonic Youth - "Dude Ranch Nurse" from Sonic Nurse
    04. SPVCXGHXSTPVRRP - "Stoner Gang!" from BLVCKLVND RVDIX 66.6 (1991)
    05. Harlem - "Irresistable" from Free Drugs 😉
    06. Nirvana - "Big Long Now" from Incesticide
    07. UGK ft. T.I. - "Hit the Block" from Underground Kingz
    08. Lil B - "I'm the Devil" from 6 Kiss
    09. Lil Boosie ft. Lil Phat & KT - "Do It Again" from Incarcerated
    10. HEALTH - "Before Tigers" from Get Color

BT. Clipd Beaks - "Black Glass" from Hoarse Lords

Clipd Beaks are from Minneapolis originally but now reside in Oakland. They're really awesome. It's really noisy & psychedelic if you're into that sort of thing. "Black Glass" is probably my favorite song of their's, and maaaaaybe my favorite song from last decade. They just put their new EP up on Bandcamp, and you can listen to the whole thing if you're so inclined. I hope they come out this way to tour again, they were awesome when I saw them.

    1. I've said it before, but "Still Light" is the saddest song I know. Still crushes me.
I've meant to check Clipd Beaks before. I'll do that tonight.

      1. You are joaking, right. Because everyone HERE knows the saddest song.
        httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=REElUors1pQ

        1. What are the odds that the saddest song ever was an international hit? No, "Dancing Queen" is just the saddest song that almost everyone knows.

  10. I brought my iPod at the last minute, but accidentally messed up the database, save for three albums.

Deadbeat - Drawn and Quartered (really, really downbeat stuff... made for excellent listening on the plane trips)
Silver Swans - Forever (eh, not really my bag... I was unimpressed at first listen... and second... and third... by the time I got to the fifth, I was ready to listen to one of the other two for the eighth time)
Mind Spiders - Meltdown (my favorite of the three, at times sounding something akin to Jay Reatard, at others, a weird electronic rock band)

It's nice having access to the full library again.

  11. I know this video has been spun by the DJs (I believe Bootsy on WGOM that was) here before, but I felt like sharing it again.

    httpv://youtu.be/zQ1B0FoQhrU

You guys know me as not being on for hyperbole, but there is something about how this song makes me feel that I find extremely difficult to put into words without using "touch my soul" or something equally derivative.

  12. I saw this commercial for ASICS while watching college basketball and the song used is one of my favorite songs off The Features album Some Kind of Salvation. The song is called 'Temporary Blues'

    httpv://youtu.be/cnFLSLwFyn0

  13. More Sharon Van Etten. This one smolders before catching fire.
