      1. They already avoided the estate tax since George died in the right year. Capital gains taxes are nothing comparatively.

  1. Verlander blows the no-hitter (and the shutout) on the third pitch of the game today.

  2. Paging AMR -

In New Ulm, strong winds damaged dozens of vehicles at the Kohls-Weelborg Chevrolet dealership around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. General manager Doug Schablin said the storm hit without warning and that the rain and wind "turned everything white."
Schablin said the wind blew out the windows of 70 vehicles and bent flagpoles at the dealership to the ground.* The National Weather Service says winds in New Ulm were clocked at 75 miles per hour.

    *emphasis mine

    1. Those same winds made their way to Mankato, though they'd lost some velocity by the time they hit us. There were some pretty memorable gusts.

  3. Miguel Sano is 0-for-19 after a walk and two strikeouts today. He did steal home in a four-run first inning. The runner at first ran and the catcher threw to second even though it was Ball 4. Sano scored uncontested. Rosario has a home run. Beloit leads 6-2.

      1. Yes. The runs in the box under the pitchers and hitters don't add up to the linescore. New Britain actually won 6-4 in 8 1/2 innings.

    1. It's been adjusted since I first linked to it, but not quite fixed. Originally, it had New Britain winning 13-7 in 10 innings at home, which of course is impossible.

        1. This reminded me of when the Twins scored five runs in extra innings at home. Always wondered (I think it was GH who pondered it first) what the record is for most runs scored by a home team in an extra inning. I suppose this also will get added to the "blog post to write, someday" list, after record of teams with as many errors as hits.

  4. I sent off a job application on Monday. Today they called me to schedule an interview, which I'll have next Thursday. I also pretty much won my trial today (no final order, but the relief we were requesting was granted, with a follow up in a few weeks). And Aquinas pooped in the potty for the first time. It's been a pretty good day.

  5. There are 6 players in the AL with OBA of .400 or better (that have enough PAs to qualify). The Twins have two of those players. Also, guess which two Twins are on the leaderboard for defensive rWAR.

    Spoiler SelectShow
      1. I like being able to edit a comment, but wish it gave one the ability to correct a poorly formatted spoiler.

          1. Ah, true. Let me rephrase: I wish it gave one the ability to very lazily correct spoilers. But that's pretty low on my wish list.

  6. Reusse does his thing. Cole DeVries folks:

"He's always been a confident kid, too. I don't see Cole as someone who will be rattled by this. He'll throw it over and take his shot."

    *He's a Twin already!

    1. Don't Lebron and Durant play small forward, so wouldn't Love essentially be the NBA's best power forward?

  7. I know at least a few of you fellas frequent Canis Hoopus, but today their equivalent of the CoC is a fun one - lots of Souhan bashing and a couple of cool infographics.

  8. Maybe this is why Joe Benson has been so terrible this year:

    Seth Stohs ‏@SethTweets
Paul Molitor announces on @1500espn that Joe Benson likely to have surgery on hamate bone. (David Ortiz, Matt LeCroy, others have had it)

    1. Wait... Didn't the Twins start a policy where all injury announcements would be made by their training staff? Did Paul Molitor join their training staff?

      1. Actually, TR said he was going to make all announcements for major league players. Don't know of a policy for minor leaguers. This would help explain Benson's awful start. I would hate to think he's in New Britain because he was too injured to perform well enough in Rochester to keep his spot on their roster.

        1. I know it was only for the major leaguers. Still, Molitor announcing it on the radio seems odd somehow.

          1. Yeah, I suspect that wasn't how they intended to make the announcement, although I don't suppose it matters a whole lot.

      1. Willingham ate Doumit.

::pokes anyone nearby to look at what he did::

        Eh? See? Eh?

    1. Plus, after leaving the Giants
Heh, nice way of saying he was released because they hated him so much.

      1. To accept this premise, you also have to say that the Twins didn't make out on that trade.

    2. Wow. Blair Reynolds' stupidity is harshing the buzz of my otherwise awesome day.

      1. Considering how awesome your day has been, this should be like a bug hitting the windshield.

    3. "While Mauer has had a great career so far, with three batting titles and a American League MVP Award, I can't help but wonder if the team would have been more successful with Pierzynski instead of Mauer."

      Haha, okay.

    4. The only way this makes any sense is that the guy wrote it in jest to make people realize just how stupid the Mauer hate really is. From 2005-11 A.J. averaged 522 PAs, Mauer 541. Mauer has a 134 OPS+ and A.J. 90. But he would rather have A.J. Than Mauer plus Joe Nathan, Francisco Liriano and Boof Bonser. And nevermind that Twins pitchers have had better ERAs with Mauer catching than otherwise in basically every year of his career.

      1. I looked at some of his previous articles. He's been grinding this ax for a while. I think someone should send him an invite to the WGOM. If he's really a devoted Twins fan, maybe he'd be interested? And then he'd learn something.

    5. is 'Blair Reynolds' Jim Souhan's pen name? good golly

While Mauer has had a great career so far, with three batting titles and a American League MVP Award, I can't help but wonder if the team would have been more successful with Pierzynski instead of Mauer.

    6. I've always kind of liked A. J., but "the best catcher the franchise every had"? Leaving Mauer aside, he totally Battey'd Earl Battey.

      1. Bingo.

I always liked Anthony John when he was our problem. buuut

Joe Mauer is 13th all-time on the franchise rWAR list
        Earl Battey is 32nd
Butch Wynegar is tied for 41st
Brian Harper is tied for 49th
Anthony John's 8.5 rWAR with the Twins does not place him in the top 50 for the franchise, and presumably places him 5th among Twins' catchers, ahead of the likes of Phil Roof, George Mitterwald and Glenn Borgmann.

        1. Yep. The Twins soon might actually be able to have the best and worst catchers in franchise history on the active roster.

          1. so the Big Pussy is soon to be worth the rWAR of the next three Twins' catchers careers combined.

another way to put it is that he's worth about four A.J.'s. Yea. Sounds about right.

            1. If you take all of the (non-Mauer) catchers who had a positive rWAR with the Twins, Mauer has been worth about half of their combined total.

    7. I went back and read the rest of the article. My head hurts. This guy was paid money to write this.

Mauer is a better individual player than Pierzynski. No question. But if Mauer had never come into the picture, the Twins and their fans would hold their former catcher in higher regard. Pierzynski is a career .285 hitter with 680 RBIs and nearly 500 extra-base hits. Plus, he has only been on the disabled list one time. In my opinion, some decent numbers and durability are better than great numbers and a penchant for winding up in the training room.

If Mauer never came along, Matt Lecroy and AJ could have split time (or Mike Redmond). The Twins could have traded AJ went Wilson Ramos came along. AJ could have slipped on the Metrodome's turf and ripped up his knee. The Twins could have let him walk way in Free Agency.

  9. Up and down day here for Gary Cooper.

I've been approved to be a mentor at my job, which shows that I have some credibility with management, and it comes with a modest but reasonable stipend.

An hour later I learned that for the first time in my career, I've been reported to Adult Protection. I took a client out for lunch at his request (we both paid independently) and then he wanted me to pick up some gum for him. I did so, which took approximately 90 seconds. The foster care where he's staying apparently has a safety contract (which I've never seen, but his previous case manager had) where he can't be left alone at all in the community. This was never relayed to me, and he really wasn't alone, as I could see him the entire time I was in the store. He had more alone time in the bathroom at the coffee shop.

Nothing will likely come of it, but ugh.

    1. I had a similar experience as an undergrad. I worked as a weekend staff member in a group home and had a guy wander off to smoke a cigarette. I had two other dudes to watch, and nearly had a heart attack trying to find the third. It all worked out in the end, but I feel your pain.

    2. For what it's worth - and hopefully it's totally worthless because this shouldn't turn into a thing, given the unreasonableness of the complaint - I have some familiarity with licensing cases.

      1. Good to know, but no, there's no way this turns into anything. I've had Adult Protection refuse to investigate obvious cases of financial exploitation; they're not going to care I went into Walgreen's to get some gum.

        But thanks. Good to know.

    1. If you've managed to hook up with my UCLA boy and you've enjoyed each other's company, that's payment right there.

  10. the Orioles are trying to become the 2005 Twins. Last week, they signed Lew Ford to a minor league deal. Today, they signed JC effin Romero to a minor league deal.

  11. Today's lineup:

    1. Denard Span, CF
    2. Ben Revere, RF
    3. Joe Mauer, DH
    4. Josh Wilingham, LF
    5. Justin Morneau, 1B
    6. Brian Dozier, SS
    7. Alexi Casilla, 2B
    8. Drew Butera, C
    9. Jamey Carroll, 3B

    Also, from LEN3:

Just found out that Snoop Dogg is throwing out the first pitch tonight, fo' shizzle.

  12. Justin Morneau is officially on the block in the Half Bakef league.

  13. Is there anyone who'd be interested in some home brew equipment? Knowing the sellers, I assume it's quality stuff. They're moving across the country, so not taking it with them. It's located in St. Peter, probably a reasonable price... I can put you in touch with 'em.
