FMD June the first: An invitation

I would have mentioned this last week, but it seems that hall passes are difficult to procure within X months of the birth of one's Xth child:

Ha Ha Tonka tomorrow night at Triple Rock!
Opening for Langhorne Slim. If I haven't bought you tickets before, I will tomorrow night. Or a CD or T-Shirt etc.

Lydia Loveless Tuesday night at the 400 Bar!
Either opening for or Co-Headlining with Scott H. Biram, who's pretty badass himself. ("The Dirty Old One-Man Band". Also, "The H. Stands for 'F--- You!'") I can probably extend my ticket offer to this show too.

Algonad, I know you said you were interested in the HHT/Langhorne show a month or so ago. Anyone else interested let me know below.

And then share your random tens.

  1. I saw Ha Ha Tonka on an episode of Anthony Bourdain No Reservations. They seemed like a cool bunch of people.

    * I dont listen to a whole lot of new music, but I came across this song the other week while I was fliiping around chanels and VH1 was playing the video and I was instantly hooked on it.
** Harry Nilsson and Mariah Carey had huge hits with this song, but I love the Badfinger version.

  2. I saw something about Ha Ha Tonka's show the other day and told Sheenie - hey, free show if you want to go. AMR's got you covered! Unfortunately, don't think we'll be able to make it.

    B. Bonnie “Prince” Billy “Lie Down in the Light” Lie Down in the Light*

    *Notes:
    6. Lykke fleshed out her sound so well that after listening to this album, her first, Youth Novels is almost painful in how amateurish and demo-quality it is at points. Some artists ruin their previous albums by repeating the formula in ways that shows the seams. She ruined her previous by blowing it out of the water.

    8. "... is you." But you could probably figure that out.

    T. I still believe this is an expertly crafted pop song. Vanessa Williams has been replaced as the theme song of all opposite-sex best friends that want to change the type of relationship. I haven't followed Ms. Swift's output much before or after this point. I'd be curious if someone told me she's on a great pop song run, but for some reason, I doubt that's the case.

    B. I'm now pretty certain that this is my favorite album from Will Oldham. I'm still hoping that his current 2-album turn away from songs with hooks is at its end.

    1. 1. HHT: What time do you think they'll be on? - I have to work & I'm not sure when I'll be done.
      2. Lydia: Softball - could definitely try to make the show after though.

  4. O.k. Usually this is the point where I make a smart ass comment about Taylor Swift, but I do have to agree that she does have a couple of quality pop songs. This being one of them.

It also reminds me of something I think I read on twitter: "What if Adele and Taylor Swift are just really bad girlfriends?"

Oh and I may be up for Lydia Loveless on Tuesday. I'll let you know early next week.

    1. So I assume that Taylor Swift has had some breakup singles since "U B-Long 2 Me".
Were they any good? Which songs were they?

I'm a bit swamped, but I liked this one...anything else from Under the Bushes Under the Stars I should check out?

      1. Huh, Acorns and Orioles not one of my faves. You might want to check out Cut Out Witch, The Official Ironman Rally Song, Your Name is Wild from that album.

But I'm going to warn you right now Corn. This is how it starts. You hear a GBV song that is intriguing and then start to seek out other good songs (let's face it there's a lot of GBV chaff) from that album. Then you start getting full albums, then you find out there's like 3 different versions of the songs you like and you have to get those too. Then the live stuff and demos. Oh, there's a DVD of that famous concert in Chicago, I gotta see that. Robert Pollard has solo stuff? Better check it out. Pretty soon your whole musical life is taken over by GBV. As someone who's gone down that road, I'm just warning you. It's a road well traveled, but it's hard to turn back.

        1. Thanks for the warning. I only asked because you're such a fan and it's the first time I was familiar with everything else on your weekly list. I listened to it and found myself, as you say, "intrigued". I figured with a catalogue of 6 bazillion songs, I should seek out your recommendation...I'll be careful!

        2. Do they have anything similar to "Hold On Hope?" Because that song is one of my favorites, but I haven't really liked much else of what I've heard.

          1. Dude, that's like asking if the Replacements have any songs like Merry Go Round

            1. As embarrassing as it is to admit this, I am not familiar enough with the Replacements' catalog to understand if this is an emphatic yes or no. Though I love the heck out of Merry Go Round.

  7. I think it will work but I will need to check on the homefront. I will let you know.

  8. I saw HHT when they were in Des Moines in October. They put on a pretty good show. I recommend going if you can swing it.

    Notes:
    4. Aww yeah. I was really hoping the next song would be rap or something.
    5. It wasn't.
    6. A leftover from my high school christian music days. This one still stands up.
    8. Yup, song/artist/album all of the same name. A side project of the guy from Belle and Sebastian apparently. I don't know anything else from it, but this one is a little sugary confection.
B2: I may have had this one on a previous list, but this is exactly the kind of track bonuses are made for.

    1. Heh, I'm glad you made the footnote on 6. I would've missed it. You just made me listen to the entirety of the Take Me To Your Leader CD. It was mostly terrible ('Breakfast' and one or two others excepted) but holy cow was it nostalgic.

      1. If I recall correctly, a lot of the music on that one runs together and is a little too raw to really be considered good. But I remember being impressed by their lyrics. Overall, I'm surprised at how much Christian music I've kept in my library over the years. There really was some pretty excellent stuff. I have no idea if anyone is putting out anything good anymore, but back in the late '90's there were some darn good Christian bands.

        1. Well, Lydia Loveless has "Jesus Was a Wino"

My wife has some real Christian (as a genre) artists she likes for the Counting Crows/Sarah Maclachlan-type sounds. If you're interested, I could get some names.

      1. like mags said: basically, you don't embed it. just straight paste the link, and then add the "v" where noted above.

        1. Yeah, sean has a plugin installed that recognizes the v when you add it to the URL that takes care of all the technical mumbo-jumbo for you.

Edit: And don't bold the "v". I just did that so it stood out.

    1. Hey, I put that one up here once! It also made my summer mix. I'll post that list later today if I get a shot.

        3 oz Absolut Boo
        2 oz bile extract
        16 Advil (crushed)

Mix all ingredients in a pitcher full of ice, shake violently, then strain into a dirty Collins glass. Garnish with 2 Alka Selzer tablets. Add bitters to taste.

            1. You can still use is a) in the traditional sense, b) ironically, particularly in reference to JEO MAURE!, or c) in the phrase "absolutely boo", coined by Hawk Harelson, which means... well, it's not entirely clear, but he was certainly upset.

I guess you could use it to try to scare people too.

                1. EDIT: oh wait, you were taking the literary highroad. i was thinking about video games. college boy.

  13. The entire score of Les Miserables. The upcoming Tom Hooper directed trailer was just released yesterday and I can't help myself. Best musical ever.

    20. Everloving - Moby
    21. Stack-a-Lee - Dr. John

    1. Ah! Andrew in Drag! Good choice.

I may have added something by Japandroids as well, but I can't remember if they were on a previous mix.

      1. That song is like a virus for me. I heard it once and I don't know if I've gone a day without singing it since.

  15. I went on a mini-spending spree and bought Beach House' Bloom, Sigur Rós' Valtari, and Dizzee Rascal's Boy in da Corner (I thought I already had it, but I guess not).

    Valtari
is a ton more ambient than any of the stuff they've put out recently. It feels like a true followup to ( ). Since ( ) is one of my favorite CDs ever, this is a good thing to me (the more upbeat stuff worked better on Jonsi's solo album, anyway).

I've gone from being fairly cold on Beach House to loving just about everything about them over the past 5 months, and I'm not sure why. I listened to Teen Dream a bunch of times when it came out, and it didn't do anything for me, then suddenly, it did. Bloom is more of the same, but that's hardly a bad thing.
