  1. I'm guessing the Olympics will make this a sparsely-attended affair. The ceremonies won't air here for a while, though, so I'm around until then, I guess.

      1. I like giant things, I like parades and I love theater. So, despite the fact that most opening ceremonies are ridiculous, I'll pay attention. Plus, I suspect England will bring it.

        1. I suspect England will bring it.

In Canadia, that would be England will giver.

  2. Indigenous persons' broadcast had Mauer below Konerko in BA, even though he was listed at being .002 higher.

      1. I'm thinking Konerko might have been higher at the start of the night, but then made an out in his first plate appearance tonight. Then, they just might not have updated the order of their graphic. That's just wild speculation, though.

        1. From now on, you should just assume it's about .100. That way, you can be pleasantly surprised every time you look at it!

    1. I already took the under of 1 HR this season for Revere. The over is still open.

      1. Shouldn't it be 0.5 HR? Nobody is going to assume he'll hit two at this point.

    1. We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition:
And gentlemen in England now a-bed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.

        1. Didna know, but (from th' Wik:) Saint Crispin's Day falls on 25 October and is the feast day of the Christian saints Crispin and Crispinian (also known as Crispinus and Crispianus, though this spelling has fallen out of favour), twins who were martyred.

          So us in the 70's.

    1. Yup. I remarked the same to the Milkmaid half an hour ago. They're so easy to avoid with the way we receive our entertainment these days.

To go on a little rant here, why are political ads allowed to attack us when we're in the middle of something we watch as a diversion? Why is this considered an acceptable arena for enraging non-discourse?

    2. not to step too much into the forbidden zone, but Im pretty annoyed about the political commercials that the local cable company runs during the Twins games

    3. Try living in Iowa. The Straw Poll was August 13th LAST YEAR. Factoring in about 6 weeks' worth of ads (conservatively) before that, I'm coming up on 60 straight weeks of political ads.

    4. Here in Illinois, I haven't seen any. This state might be in the bag. Just guessin'.

    1. Well, the double steal erases the mistake, I guess.

Then the passed ball makes it so they would have advanced anyway. Oh well.

  3. Tomlin is not pitching inside to Willingham. If he does, the ball will go 500 feet

  4. The Cleveland feed just did a "Browns fan for life" plug, and for a minute I wondered "What do they have to do with the St. Louis Browns?" That's how much I'm ready for football.

    1. It would be awesome for someone to do a documentary about the hapless St. Louis Browns. About the only thing I know about them is that they went a World Series during the World War II years

  5. Woah! Where'd this come from? Too bad for Diamond. One more out and I would have actually considered the possibility of a Perfecto since he would be facing the bottom of the order in the sixth. Oh, well. I'd settle for a shutout.

  6. I left to get gas for my car ride back to Iowa tomorrow and it was 3-0. I logged back on expecting the worst. Instead it's 8-0. Why can't this happen to me more often.

    1. The Twins have an insanely good record when they lead after one inning, so when they led by three after one inning, I totally expected the W.

  7. Section in right field trying to start the wave. Thankfully it hasn't left the outfield.

  8. Bert on the video board saying he likes watching athletes go about and do their thing.

  9. I'm happy they show OBP and SLG, but it's a little weird showing it in AVG/SLG/OBP order is a little strange.

  10. NBC's Olympic teaser worked on me, I admit. Skim's now interested in it too, which should prove fun over the next few weeks.

It also made me want to visit London (or move there), which isn't so great considering my financial situation. I've still never once been out of this country. That's just not okay with me.

    1. London is a very diverse city, both in terms of the populace as well as the differences from neighborhood to neighborhood. The nice parts of London are very nice, the rough parts are very rough (as with any major international city). I've been to both parts, and some parts in between. London was my first experience abroad besides Niagara Falls as a kid. It's not a bad place to get a taste of international travel since there's no language barrier.

      1. Yes, I've been London a couple of times and loved it. I haven't been since I was in the New Year's parade in 1998 and am getting the urge to go back. Of course, I also love going to exotic/obscure places (I'm off the Amazon next week), so I can't complain too much about not visiting more frequently.

Spoons, traveling abroad is very enjoyable and (if you can swing it financially) will really help your daughters by learning more and cultures throughout the world. It is a perfect icebreaker (not that you need one with your personality) whenever meeting a new person.

        1. Yeah, my personality is pretty loud. I'll be fine in any place where English is spoken, I suspect.

I just have to get somewhere. If I die young, my greatest regret will be seeing so little of the world. At least I've seen a lot of America.

          1. Eh, I've done just fine in places where English isn't spoken. I usually freshen up on the local language to know enough to let people know that I'm not an American jackass, but still manage to communicate in English, pointing, gibberish with great success. Normally, the locals are just happy that I made an effort.

              1. Just go to the library, check out a Frommer's guide for wherever you are going (do this several months in advance) and you will have a great headstart. Using the Italy guide a few years ago for our honeymoon, I was able to learn about four or five completely out of the way restaurants that were easily the best meals we ate (and we didn't eat a single bad meal on the trip). Plus, I found out about a couple of really interested tours that needed reservations months in advance (like Nero's Palace, and St. Peter's Crypt).

        2. Philosofette studied abroad in London. She loved it. I visited for a week and it easily became my second favorite city outside the U.S. (I studied in Athens and Rome, and Rome takes the cake). I can't recommend it enough.

          1. My number one regret in life is not studying abroad. In hindsight, I think I would have been in heaven spending a year either in Cape Town or Buenos Aires.

                    1. That's cool. It just seemed an appropriate time to make the recall to my "basically true" story.

    2. My dream vacation would probably be to New Zealand. I'm hoping I get that chance in the next 5 years or so.

      1. I've actually been in Canadian waters, for about 15 minutes. It was just north of Minnesota, though.

When we were in Washington, traveling much didn't even enter our heads. Washington was supposed to be a very short stop, not the three and a half years it became.

        1. WashingtonMankato was supposed to be a very short stop, not the three and a half years it becameit's becoming.

          FTFMe

          1. I was there for eight years. I'll probably never forgive myself for that.

I met the Milkmaid in the sixth one, though, so I can forgive myself for that much.

        2. Yeah, Washington is a big enough state that you would have had to make an effort to go over the border.

Also, the thing about driving across a border is that you have to go a considerable distance for anything to really seem foreign. Vancouver is the only Canadian/foreign city I've been to, and it wasn't any more exotic to me than Chicago.

  11. the last time a Twins player hit a Grand Slam was Rene Tosoni (remember him!) against the Royals on Sept 27, 2011.

    1. Cleveland radio fellas were quite complimentary of Lexi's defense on that Brantley grounder.

    2. Parker Hageman had an article about Casilla's hitting over at TwinsDaily today, he added this tweet

      Parker Hageman ‏@OverTheBaggy
The disappointing part of Casilla's inability to hit is that his 2B defense has been great by both UZR (6.0, 2nd) & +/- (+10, 5th) ratings.

      1. Wow, I had no idea he had gotten that good. I still thought of him as average.

  12. I need a twitter handle. I'd like it to not be "MagUidhir" or anything related to that as it's going to be out there and I'd like to keep it separate from here. Unfortunately my email is taken, so I need some other suggestions.

  13. I've been watching the Opening Ceremonies. Which I freaking love. They're absurd and emotional and "historic" and silly fun.

I see the Twins are doing well though. Someone should have mentioned to our offense that Scott Diamond was pitching so they could have taken the night off...

    1. Yeah, save the runs for Blackburn starts. Not that Nick couldn't give up more than 10 runs, but let's see him work for the L, at least.

  14. Alright, time for me to get some sleep so I can get up and run at 6 AM tomorrow!

  15. I think Revere's arm is better than Damon's. Nice to know it is just second worst in the league.

  16. That was pretty awesome. This game log was made better by the 'enthusiasm waning' tag.

  17. It would've been nice to save a few runs for today, but of course it doesn't work like that. We're still on track for 104-58!
