  1. It's been a hectic week. Tuesday, Mom A had an appointment in Mitchell to see if she needs cataract surgery (she does). Since neither she nor Dad A should be driving in a town of more than a thousand people any more, we left Monday afternoon (they live four hours away), took her to the appointment, and came home Wednesday morning. Thursday morning, we found out that Mrs. A's mom needed surgery to clear a clogged artery in her neck. So, Thursday afternoon, we drove to Sioux Falls, getting back late last night.

Luckily, I've learned to always work ahead when I can. Tomorrow's worship is ready to go. On the other hand, I've done nothing for next week, and for a variety of reasons will get nothing done this weekend. Plus, I have to be gone all day Thursday for a seminary which will almost certainly prove to be worthless, and I have a wedding Saturday.

Mrs. A and I both know how lucky we are to still have our parents in our lives at our ages (and their ages). I also know there are people reading this who have lost parents and wish they had my problems. Still, having elderly parents with health problems, and being the sibling who is best suited, by proximity and/or temperament, to help them deal with those problems, is not always a lot of fun. We treasure the moments we have with them, but we're not looking forward to the road we're headed down.

    1. i know it's been said here before, but both your parents and your community (well, ours too) are lucky to have you. best of luck with the crazy days ahead.

  2. I was all set to write this one out about the wild party of seven-year-olds staying overnight here last night, but they ran me ragged. Skim had a blast, though, and loved her dolphin cake (looked like a dolphin...wasn't made out of one).

  3. Iowa lost to Central Michigan when the Hawkeyes allowed nine points in the final minutes. Not allowing Central Michigan to tie the game with a two-point conversion probably cost Iowa the game. Central Michigan had to attempt an onside kick and recovered it before moving into field goal range to win it. If the game had been tied, Central Michigan would have undoubtedly kicked it off and Iowa would have had time to go down the field to kick its own field goal. At the very least the game would have gone into OT.

    1. the funniest thing about that onside kick is that the Iowa people ran away from the ball allowing an easy recovery. the C Michigan kicker's fg attempt was maybe 15 feet off the ground, but made it over the crossbar.

    1. Ski-U-Mah! That's only on the Big Ten Network? I figured a night game would be on a network or at least one of the four letters. They're sounding good so far against a real school.

      1. yep, only on Big10Net.

the analyst dude for this game sound like he just came off a surf board, or a professional Rex Hudler imitator.

  4. Pat Neshek gave up a game-tying HR to the Yankees as the A's blew a four-run lead in extras and lost in 14 innings.

  5. The free beer at the wedding reception I'm at is Michelob Golden Light. Even when it's free it ain't worth the price.

    1. A friend of mine who bought some of my black IPA offered a drink to a friend, and he said he didn't like it. "Coors Light for me all the way, baby!"

My friend yanked it away and told him he wasn't worthy.

  6. I had to work today, but I came home to the lawn already mowed. I've also been informed that she is taking the boys to a party tomorrow. Now I have nothing to do on my one day off and the Vikings are on FOX on the early game, my favorite team, the Raiders, are on CBS for the late game and the Twins are playing a doubleheader. It's going to be a good day.

  7. here are your unbeaten teams in the Big Ten

    Minnesota
    Northwestern
    Ohio St. *

*Ohio St. is not bowl eligible this year.
