  1. morning English soccer, Ryder Cup, college football games and baseball games throughout the afternoon and evening. today is a good sports day.

  2. So, I see that although five of fourteen teams are going to the playoffs, not a single AL team has clinched a playoff spot yet. I wonder if there's a way to calculate how unlikely that is*.

    * - there obviously is, but I imagine it's too much work to essentially get to "pretty damned unlikely"

    1. Tampa Bay's run differential is 99 runs better than the Orioles, but they'll likely miss the playoffs. That's insane.

    1. All the games are flyover cities except LA, which is not popular at all because the team is helmed by Scioscia whom everyone hates. Makes sense that the country is basically split in thirds for them. Oh, and Bert's not part of the announcing team today.

    2. That was actually a nice thing.we were going to have to yet down to the cities by eleven before to get to the game on time. Now we can take our time.

    1. Quite a score. Personally I've never been a fan of Pierre-Auguste, but I'd be happy to stumble across one and quickly sell it. Then I'd turn around and buy a Bonnard. If Impressionism were jazz, Degas would be Miles Davis. Renoir would be Kenny G. (Pierre Bonard would be someone like Eric Dolphy.)

  3. Harking back to a discussion a few weeks ago, here's the story about how GW helped cause the student-debt crisis. Stephen Joel Trachtenberg has always been the definition of a seven letter word starting with a and ending with e (and I'm not talking awesome).

    1. The way Trachtenberg saw it, selling George Washington over the other schools was like selling one brand of vodka over another. Vodka, he points out, is a colorless, odorless liquid that varies little by maker. He realized the same was true among national private universities: It was as simple as raising the price and upgrading the packaging to create the illusion of quality. Trachtenberg gambled that prospective students would see costly tuition as a sign of quality, and he was right. “People equate price with the value of their education,” he says.

That's both hilarious, and sad. Fancy liberal arts education as Veblen good? Maaaaybe.

I also find it interesting that he quadrupled the endowment while also doubling the real sticker price of tuition.

  4. if you like offensive football, flip over to FX in 20 minutes and watch the second half of West Virginia/Baylor. its 35-35 at the half. Gino Smith has 4 TD passes and 2 incompletes (26-28!!!)

          1. 6 INC, 8 TD pases. Welcome to the Big 12, West Virginia.

There was about 1500 yard of offense in the game

West Virigina scored 70, but didnt cover the -12

    1. A friend of mine and I were recently discussing our favorite Norm Peterson entrance lines. Mine has always been, "Stop me at one, Coach. Nah, make it one-thirty."

      1. 'its a dog-eat-dog world, and Im wearing Milkbone underwear'

Parks and Rec on NBC is probably the closest thing to Cheers that is on the air right now. As noted in the article, Micheal Schur is a huge Cheers fan.

    2. great article, a lot of things I didn't know about the cast.

My favorite line from the show:

Diane: Do you know what the difference is between you and a fat-brained ass?
      Sam: No, I don't.
      Diane: The fat-brained ass would!
