October 25, 2012: More Wit and Wisdom

I'll keep watching just because it's baseball. It's still the greatest game in the world. The winter is long, and there will be quite enough months without baseball as it is. I'm not going to stop watching the games while there are still games to watch. 8/20/11

This is where I live: yesterday, I saw a kid riding his bike to football practice. He was wearing his shoulder pads, his jersey, blue jeans, and a cowboy hat. 8/23/11

Not that I would ever wish misfortune on anyone, but it would be interesting to see what, if anything, Mr. Souhan would say if he was sick or injured and couldn't write his column for a few weeks. 9/5/11

I listened to about three minutes of Skip Bayless and Stephen A. Smith filling in for Mike and Mike this morning. I feel considerably dumber for the experience. 9/5/11

An advantage to our local country station having a small playlist is that Kid Rock doesn't seem to be on it. 9/8/11

A friend of mine said that if Tony Romo keeps playing like he is the Vikings will trade for him. I said, "Not until he's a few years older." 9/12/11

Who was the guy in the booth with Gordo today? Are the Twins so bad that they can't even get their broadcasters to come to the games now? 9/19/11

If he does well, Bill Smith will probably trade him for $5,000.00, who's a proven closer. 9/24/11

Drew Butera tripled? Were the Indians using a six-man infield or something? 9/24/11

The Twins have never lost a game on my birthday, either! Of course, I was born in December. 10/18/11

Agreed. Pretty much every time I give in to temptation and join a political discussion, I regret it. There are exceptions, of course, but most people (at least most people I hear discussing politics) aren't interested in hearing what I think. They're just interested in telling me what they think. So, if I just take a deep breath and keep my mouth shut, we're all happier. 10/20/11

I hope they don't own the phrase "Happy Birthday", too. If they do, I'm getting everyone here in big trouble! 12/3/11

Thank you for the birthday wishes. I'm not sure what a fifty-three-year-old is supposed to feel like, but I really don't feel fifty-three. I feel more like a thirty-year-old with a long memory.
I have a wonderful family, a loving wife, good friends, good health, a great community to live in, and am able to make a living doing things I love to do. There's not much more a man can ask from life than that. I don't know why I've been blessed this way--it's sure not because I deserve it--but I am very thankful for it.

  1. I recorded three quarters of an inch of rain in my rain gauge last night. I cant remember the last time Ive had that much rain in my gauge. If I were to take a stab...probably early June?

    1. It's pretty great that over 40% of the entries didn't get a single DS correct. I'm surprised I did well because I used my preseason predictions rather than following my gut on which teams I would have actually picked a few weeks ago using my gut.

  2. I met several baseball fans today. A dude wandered into Ulster University's printmaking studio with a texas rangers hat on and we had a great talk about how an Irish dude becomes a ranger's fan, and a colleague told me that he's a rabid cubs fan. Crazy.

      1. I taught at the Belfast campus today, and then drank my dinner at John Hewitt's pub.

[edit] and yes, I'm living in Bangor.

              1. That close to Victoria Square there is a chance. We got caught in the rain coming back from the Titanic stuff on the other side of the Lagan, so we ducked into a bar. It may have been Bittle's, but I'm not sure.

                1. That day it was raining like nobody's business, so we decided to bar hop our way around town in between downpours. Rebuilding our steps best I can, we got caught in McHugh's, Rockies (a Canadian bar in The Odessey), somewhere on the way back towards town square (possibly Bittle's), The Crown (dang, what crap luck), and somewhere further south on the Dublin Road on our way back to the Queen's area.

  3. I showed Linds a gif of the Delmon throw last night, and she laughed aloud and said "I'm so glad he doesn't play for the Twins anymore".

Seriously, that wasn't quite as good as the Manny B Manny and Raul Ibanez gifs (and probably not even as good as the Pretty Dancing Princess Delmon from earlier this year), but it's solid comedy.

    1. I laughed and laughed as I watched that over and over. I'll cut Delmon some slack and point out that throwing is not a typical weakness for him, other than maybe throwing to the wrong base. That was just bad timing for a rare bad throw.

    1. I think Doug Martin ran the ball more times that game than he did his entire career at Boise St.
