    5. Do I prefer the cover or the original? Well, which one is playing this moment? I do need to praise Flava Flav's work on the original. Fantastic hype-man emphasis of points without stealing the scene. Actually focuses and claustrophobizes the whole thing.
    8. Probably my least-favorite song on the album, a rewriting of Joan Osbourne's "One of Us".
    E. Some Oldham junkies aren't fond of the overproduced re-recordings of this album, but some are just great, and give the song a different take. This one is one of my favorite reimaginings, with a David Berman's bass voice straining and rising as it intones the final repeated lines with Billy: "I am no more a workhorse. I am a racing horse. I am your favorite horse." Sounds like Eeyore (a workmule?) finally caring.

    1. In reading "Our Band Could Be Your Life", the author talks a lot about the influence REM had on the music scene of the day. Maybe it's because of my age wherein REM has always existed and I can't compare things to pre-REM, but they just have never resonated with me at all.

      1. pfft. Next you are going to tell me that you've never utilized Roxy Music's Avalon as make-out soundtrack music.

      1. I'm not either. There's a couple of their other songs I dig too though, so I'm starting to wonder if I should check them out more. Seems like a lot of effort though.

      1. Almost every single one of their songs that I've heard has grown on me. But they all needed to.

Zack likes this. I was almost so happy I cried when they played "Fluffy" from 12GCC the second time I saw them. What a great album.

      1. i originally ended up with that CD from a friend i eventually lost touch with (sorry, sarah!). it must have been one of the originals because it had the muhammad ali speech at the end. i think i lost that disc in a car break-in and it took me FOREVER to find another original copy of that song. the internets came through eventually.

        1. My copy of the CD came without the clip, it's a horrible and jarring cut where the sample was supposed to be. The download I had of the album before that had it so I was really confused. I bought this on vinyl recently, and while I haven't had a chance to put it on my turntable, I want to say that one DOES have the sample. I hope so.
