  1. I know there has been a little fun had regarding the oral history format here as of late but here is another one from Vanity Fair. This one about recent topic of conversation, Freaks and Geeks.

  2. Lit. and film over the holiday break:

    Read:
Life of Pi (Y. Martel) 2002 Man Booker prize winner - fast, interesting survival story. Now also in the theatre.
Instanbul Passage (J. Kanon) - post-war intrigue in Istanbul - well crafted - plot kinda like Casablanca.
Sun Over Breda (A. Perez-Reverte) - another of the Captain Alatrise canon - Spanish/Dutch wars.

    Watched:
Mahler on the Couch (Adlon) - Quirky consultations between Gustav Mahler and Sigmund Freud regarding Mahler's wife's affair with Walter Gropius. 9 on 14 pt. NBB scale.
The Duel (Koshasvili) - Period rendition of Chekhov novella about listless civil servant Laevsky, his bored mistress Nadya, and a scientist who is so annoyed at their lifestyle that he challenges Laevsky to a duel. 9/14.

        1. I'm still game. I can't 100% confirm yet, though. I've got a work trip to Thailand that will be end of March/early April. I can let you know when I get that date nailed down.

    1. Busy all day yesterday, but in response to Beau - "Wooo!"
...especially with the latest injury to K-Lub.

  3. Why is it that no one in the media seems to remember that Ray Lewis was involved in killing someone?

    1. On the bright side, in addition to knowing what acts home runs erase, we also know what hitting people real hard absolves one of doing.

    2. I occasionally have to remind myself of that fact. the man is just so charismatic that it makes it difficult remember that at times.

    3. Pirate, I have been wondering the exact same thing. It would be one thing to soft-pedal it, or to make escuses, but it never even gets mentioned. The entire episode has just been dropped down the memory hole.

    4. This is the main reason I have an intense dislike of the Baltimore Ravens organization. That and Joe Flacco.

    5. To be fair, he only admitted to a charge of obstruction of justice. The only crime we know for sure was that he lied to protect his friends (and possibly cover up two murders). According to Wikipedia, he agreed to admit to this and testify against his friends in exchange for worse charges being dropped. Meanwhile, his friends he testified against were acquitted. So, all we can really say for sure is he was involved in a fight that resulted in the death of two men and his conviction of obstruction of justice.

        1. It is, but I have to wonder how many people would lie to protect their best friend if they accidentally killed someone. Of course, this ignores the fact that my best friend, for instance, would never, ever harm anyone other than to protect the people he loves.

      1. That's why I didn't say he "committed murder." He was still involved "in killing someone."

/former clerk for a public defender and brother of a criminal defense attorney

      2. He has six children by four women.

I know this isn't uncommon among gangsta athletes, but it's just more strike against in my book.

      1. the Mbakwe block, then monster dunk sorta turned the game, then Hollins went in for the kill.
