January 29, 2013: The Real World

Back to work after four days hanging with my best friend. I already can't wait for my next couple of days off so I can continue the job search with my full attention.

    1. Comments Section Gem:

      Der Kaiser Says:
Gotta think he stays if it’s named something other than “Sports On Earth.”
It’s like they sat around and tried to come up with a title more pretentious than Grantland.

    2. I'd pay a subscription to an independent site if Joe Pos chose to go the Andrew Sullivan route, but I don't read anything else on Sports on Earth (a man only has so much time.) I suppose the question is: how many times can Joe Posnanski leave publications before that's his only recourse, and why wasn't Sports on Earth a good fit?

      1. There was a comment on HBT talking about his departure from SI:

Wow. I have a few friends at SI, who tell me it was (is?) an open secret that Posnanski did not “leave for other opportunities” so much as he was…well, fired. Management was not thrilled about his handling of the Paterno situation, which they felt reflected badly on their publication (as well as Posnanski himself). One wonders if his departure from SportsOnEarth is of a similar character. Seems kind of odd that he’d abandon such a supposedly great opportunity after six months. Whatever the real story is, I’d say it reflects badly on Posnanski.

Like the commenter, I have to wonder why he left Sports on Earth so soon.

        1. SportsOnEarth treated Pos as its star attraction, so I doubt they would suddenly fire him. If this becomes a pattern for him, it would reflect badly, but If NBC threw him a whole bunch of money to switch, I would think that would be difficult to turn down.

        2. I think that the publication of his Paterno book was a CLM*. I suppose the publisher saw dollar signs, but did it do well? I don't think so, although I hear that a movie will be made (Pacino as Paterno -- I'm so old that I can remember when Pacino was like a god), so I guess he will get paid.

For as good a columnist as he is, his Big Red Machine book sucked and I haven't read the Paterno book (and won't!), but he's severely tarnished his reputation.

        3. I don't buy that SI was going to fire him. They put up with Reilly for years. They aren't going to suddenly care about hard hitting journalism.

    1. I should write some notebooks about how great a person I am and what drugs I'm giving to major-leaguers.
Given the context, I hardly find this to be "evidence".
      And, are roiders really "drug-addled"?

    1. Walking to the bus this morning was an adventure. Thankfully, only the few inches of snow from the weekend, it was easy enough to walk on that instead.

    2. speaking of weather, Chicago broke its daily high temp record at 7am and was 65 degrees at noon.
they are expecting its biggest rainfall in 10 months, but its going to fall on frozen ground.
      crazy

      1. we'll take any moisture we can get right now. we recently broke 355 days of >1" snow cover (a stunning 1.1", and that disappeared quickly), and now this crap.

    1. I saw the second half. Banham is really good. Their big girl (Riche?) had a terrible game inside. Bad hands, slow feet. And they did not take care of the ball down the stretch after having come all the way back from a double-digit deficit to take a lead at 82-81.

Overall, it was a very entertaining game. 52-41 at the half? That is a lot of offense.

    1. Yay! Congrats! I've come to expect CdL meta-stories from you for life-changing events... but I guess the picture is good too. Great name.

  1. For those who didn't know, USA v. Canada in men's soccer is tonight at 9/8 Central on ESPN2. This is just a friendly. It's a tune up for the CONCACAF hexagonal. Next Wednesday is the first game of the last round of WC qualifying.

  2. Adding to a day of fantastic baby news (again, congrats Beau!), my sister is pregnant with her second child. Her first child has several issues, the most significant of which is hypoplastic left-heart syndrome. Essentially, he was born with only half a heart. It did seem to potentially be tied to some genetic factors, though that's not really certain. Anyway, the good news is that baby #2 has a 4-chambered heart. Sometimes the standard model is the way to go.
