  1. just got the "ugly year" banner. Genius.

also, it's so cold that I will have to put a long-sleeve shirt on to work on my fence today.

    1. That is awesome, especially for a Deadspin story. Yes, they've managed to lower my expectations greatly in the last couple years.

      1. I haven't check the site regularly since Will left. A friend of mine, an alum of said school, posted it to her internet page bringing it to my attention.

      2. They've got good and they've got bad. Hard-hitting investigative journalism plus TMZ-style embarrassing cell-phone pics.

  2. The dumbass next to me at the Eagan ice rink watched his two year old drop all his goldfish crackers on the aisle, pick them up, put them in the bowl and keep eating them. All the while he's got a bag of crackers in his hand.

    1. "SodaStream has a product that could be wildly disruptive to the soda industry, if successful not so ridiculously overpriced."

FTFThem. Seriously. Charged water dispensers and fancy-schmanzy soda syrups have been around for a long time.

    2. CBS also forced CNET to change their Best of CES award due to bring in litigation with the, Dish.

    1. But if people checked things out first, they wouldn't be able to be outrageously outraged, which seems to be what many of the people on facebook live for.

      1. Are you suggesting that pop cans don't sit unpackaged in warehouses so that rats can urinate on the tops?

    2. we had an older gentleman at work that would send out all the same emails that are floating around. after awhile it'd just reply with the snopes link refuting it.

    3. Same. I had to lean on one of my cousins using that site for a good couple of years before she finally started using it and realized that MySpace chain letters might not be the #1 source of hard news.

  3. i officially ate it for the first time last night. i usually have at least one good fall per year, and i certainly met that quota (ice covered by freshly fallen snow). the thigh took a meaty, direct hit. it seriously took me about 20 minutes of agony to get up the stairs last night. i'm shocked that i've (eventually) been able to move around today.

  4. Off to see Soundgarden for the first time in 17 years. (Lolla '96, Des Moines IA, with Metallica and Waylon Jennings.)

  5. have fun!
my favorite Soundgarden song alternates between 'Burden in My Hand' and 'Black Hole Sun'

      1. I love listening to it on my mp3 player and the ear bud on. towards the end when Chris Cornell is repeating 'Black Hole Sun', the vocals shift from left to center to right ear.

  6. people get up in arms about the Baseball Hall of Fame voting, but at least they make their votes public.
    Strib story

Carter is only the third receiver from the 1990s to get into the Hall of Fame. Every other decade going back to the '50s has had at least four and as many as seven. So it's possible that Buffalo's Andre Reed and Tim Brown also will join Carter in the Hall of Fame soon.

The committee spent a looong time discussing the receivers again this year. I can't repeat anything that's said in the room, but it was a struggle for everyone as they tried to determine again in their heads how to prioritize Carter, Reed and Brown.

In the end, the committee eliminated Brown in the cut from 15 modern-era finalists to 10. Reed was eliminated in the cut from 10 to five.

    1. Peter King is a HoF voter. The baseball HoF has nothing on the football HoF in terms of dysfunction.

      1. I might have felt that way a while back, but I'm going to have to be persuaded a little these days. In terms of the actual facility and exhibits, the baseball HOF is much better, even though the busts are very cool.

    2. How many punters per decade?

I'm a little disappointed that Carter got in. He was the only player that I felt was clearly being shafted and now I don't have that to draw on when I make fun of the NFL HOF.

Good for Carter though, easily deserved. The HOF is less of a farce with him in it.

      1. hello, Ray Guy hasn't been shafted (to echo your first line)???

[edit: that link to a NYT piece actually downplays Guy's credibility; interesting, if somewhat selective look at stats]

        1. looking at the NFL 75th Anniversary Team, its looks like Guy and Billy 'White Shoes' Johnson are the only people selected that are not in the HoF

        2. I just don't feel confident enough that Guy deserves to be there that I can complain hard enough.
I'd vote for him but I'm also pretty ignorant of football history.
