  1. I did my taxes before I left home, so that's one less thing for me to worry about. They called off my meetings for today, but it does me no good because there's a winter storm warning out and Interstate 90 is closed. So, I'll be hanging around the motel all day. The internet connection is kind of iffy--if it holds in there, Minor Details will show up at some point this morning.

    1. Got about an inch of ice plastered over everything before it snowed on top of it. There's a lot of broken down trees and the powerlines are really heavy. Sioux Falls may have gotten the worst of it- I know it's a little better down to the south, but it's still not good.

I drove home from work at 2:30 am after staying late to get everything started back up from a power outage (surprise!) and only saw two other vehicles. Driving 35 miles takes a long time when you can't go faster than 30 mph.

      1. Driving 35 miles takes a long time when you can’t go faster than 30 mph.

I'd guess that it takes more than an hour.

          1. This one is pretty easy. If you can use 60 mph, it's nice since it niftily* reduces to 1 mile per minute. In this case you're going 30 mph which is 1/2 of 60mph. So if you're going half as fast that means you're doing 1 mile every 2 minutes, and 35 miles at 1 mile every 2 minutes is 35*2 or 70.

*Shut up, that is so a word

              1. Oh, sorry. I didn't mean to insult anyone. Shame on me for assuming, but you wouldn't be the first artist I met that couldn't do that math (Much like I couldn't draw a turkey without tracing my hand).

        1. Luckily*, I had the newest Gleeman and the Geek podcast to listen to!

*definitely a word, though I may be stretching the definition a bit to use it here.

      2. As I look at the forecast, I might have been better off to chance it today than to try it tomorrow. Still, I pretty much have a rule that if there's a winter storm warning out, I'm not going anywhere. If it turns out I have to stay until Friday, well, I never seem to have too much trouble finding something to do.

  2. Ugh, I thought I had my taxes done two months ago. Through the bad faith of others, I'm still dealing with them and probably will be for another six months or so.

      1. Fortunately, it doesn't matter as much to me, but could make them very angry when they start receiving the forms they need to fill out. So one way or another, I'll at least get some sort of revenge.

  3. Thanks to a refinance and a lump-sum buyout of my vacation days, we owed this year. First time I've contributed to an IRA for a previous year, which dampened the pain somewhat.

    1. This is the first time in three years that we didn't owe, mostly because I had been an independent contractor previously. Unfortunately, we won't see any of the federal return due to owing back taxes and may not see the state either.

    2. I fall into the category of people who end up using taxes as forced savings. I'm perfectly happy with that. I suspect things will change once we buy a house or something.

      1. I fall into that category, too, and I kept up with it even after buying a house. (also, paying mortgage interest adds a nice deduction!)

          1. And I'm looking forward to hopefully screwing a family out of the child care deduction that they are now attempting to claim at the expense of our returns.

            1. we were at a home that was pretty cheap, but the lady would only go with cash and no receipts, which was the trade-off. now pete's at a different, more expensive, but receipt providing place. ch-ching!

(i'm not sure if that was the sound of the deduction or cash draining from our wallet)

                1. natch. i was just thinking of all the money i have to spend to get a small portion of it back. we're definitely maxing out that deduction.

          2. Oy, getting that statement from daycare showing the total we spent last year was painful. 2011 was actually worse because the jalapeno was in the infant room for most of that year. I'm trying not to think of what 2014 will look like. (Denial is a totally valid financial planning strategy, isn't it?)

  4. Trey earned his first win last night pitching for his Little League Farm (7-9 years) Rays team, which won 7-1. He was helped out by an A's team that couldn't hit coach's pitch for the most part, but a very young ump had a tiny strike zone. Trey ended up with 1 run allowed in 2 IP with 2 Ks. He had only one practice session as a pitcher and I had him throw one time to me at home. We didn't even know he was pitching until we got there because we had a kid that was going to pitch wasn't able to get to the game.

    1. Nice. Pretty amazing you've got ball games to go to already. My son doesn't have tryouts for two more weeks. I don't get your second sentence. Is it coach pitch or kid pitch? Kid pitch starts here at nine--too early in my opinion. The games move soooo sloooow.

      1. Kids pitch, but there aren't any walks. When you get to ball 4, the coach for the team that is hitting throws pitches for the batter to hit (the number depends on number of strikes on the batter). It's a really good way to ease kids into pitching.

        1. Really like those rules. My son's league allows for walks. That leads to some of the less-developed players standing at the plate with their bat on their shoulder just trying to get on base. Pretty painful to watch.

  5. My taxes were completed in early March. I did forget until the other day that I needed to complete my FAFSA prior to 4/15, but I did that yesterday.

  6. Usually I get a big federal return and use it to pay my State taxes. Now that my last kid is over 17 I didn't get the $1000 per kid tax reduction so I got a very modest federal return but still owe a bunch of State taxes. That hurt. Taxes forms are in electronically but not sending that check until Monday.

    1. don't you have kid(s) in college? American Opportunity Tax Credit, baby!

frankly, I was sure I was doing it wrong when I saw how much that was worth, given that we are paying the Boy's tuition out of 529 funds.

        1. found money for me, since I had assumed that we would not qualify for the credits (because already benefiting from the 529 sheltering).

See, it's all in the wrist the perspective!!!1111one1111!!!

  7. I discovered in the process of doing the College Board PROFILE and FAFSA that the Boy had to file this year. Ugh. Being the helicopter parent that I am (or just preferring that he not go to federal prison), I did his for him. Still gotta do his state form.

      1. Cody Zeller would be a stupid pick for the Wolves, but Bracey Wright was a different regime. This one has a thing for Syracuse.

      2. You guys are all crazy. Everyone knows Khan covets Michael Carter-Williams.

  8. The Twins have currently out-homered their opponents 6-2. They haven't out-homered their opponents for a full season since 2004. They also have allowed the fewest homers in the AL.

    1. And you can't really say it was the opponents faced either, since Baltimore was second in HR in the AL last year (214 v. NYY 245).

Then again, both the Tigers and Royals were below average (163 & 131 [resp.] vs. 179)

  9. So Champions League Semis are set: Bayern, Barca, Real, Dortmund.

I'd like to see the two German teams square up and two Spanish teams square up, then have one of each in the finals. Bayern v. Madrid would be a pretty cool finals match.

  10. quick someone: where is that image of "sean" sipping coffee after having done miraculous technical things in a snap?

  11. I see that the Rangers DFA's Julio Borbon. He would be a decent player to snag on waivers and platoon with the Maestro while Hicks gets a little more AAA seasoning. It's a shame that they probably can't drop Butera from the 40-man now that he's injured.

  12. So, apparently Whose Line Is It Anyway? is returning with a different host, but they're still going to trot out Stiles, Mochrie, and Brady. I love those guys, but I just don't know if I'll be able to take any more of them. When the same people work together for years, it feels less like improv and more like bad skits, as their jokes are often telegraphed. I was getting to the point with the last series where I even knew what they were going to say.

    1. I agree, but I do think regurgitating the same people might still be funnier and more fresh without Drew Carey as the lamest host imaginable.

      1. That's certainly possible. If Clive Anderson was hosting, I wouldn't care who they had up on stage.

  13. Looks like tomorrow's edition of Minor Details will be short. The Red Wings and the Kernels are both rained out.
