2013 Game 15: Twins at Hosers

Like most of you, when this team lost five in a row to run their record to 4-7, I figured we'd seen .500 for the last time. Well, here we are again, after getting there with a tenth inning victory in unfriendly US Cellular Field. So, what are the chances we rise above .500?

Scott Diamond, who doesn't seem quite ready to go through the lineup three times yet, faces Gavin Floyd, who's been a thoroughly predictable pitcher for about four years now. He's having a bit of a disastrous season, but it looks to be due to bad luck (.404 BABIP; 25 percent of flies have been homers).

The last time the Twins went through a rough spell, I eventually tuned out. Yes, my life was a mess then, as I was tampering with stupid things at the time that took up most of what would have been my "focus," but I ignored baseball in every sense outside of checking the standings now and then to see that, yes, the Twins were still terrible and looked like they would be for the rest of eternity. I about gave up when they announced Butch Huskey as an important free agent signing, but as the fog in my brain cleared, the Twins started putting a decent product on the field again and thankfully, hooked me anew.

The last two years have been brutal, but - and here's my point, if it qualifies as one - I have elected not to tune out for more than a couple of days because of this community. So do I thank you for keeping me interested in baseball, or blame you for forcing me to watch bad baseball?

I choose the former. Cheers, Citizens!

  1. I thought Danks was too decent a pitcher to have moved to the outfield. Now I realize there's two of them!
DL'd pitcher John is 16 months older that outfielder Jordan.

      1. However you want to look at it, they should not go to each other for hitting advice.

              1. One of.

How about Carlos Baerga? I was somewhat tuned out, but he went from ubiquitous to "Huh, that guy's still playing?" in a very short timeframe. I'm not sure how good he really was, though.

                1. Yeah yeah.

Baerga had two really good seasons, but it feels more like early peak. Two more average seasons followed before becoming a replacement player.

For Dunn, I'm not sure he counts either. His defense is so horrendous that it negates any offensive value. Now that a team finally recognizes his terrible defense, he got old.

  2. I wonder if Ramirez wishes he had spent more time with his family now that Arcia is, uhh, not doing quite as good as his first game.

  3. Hawk Harrelson: '10 years ago, if the Twins would have spent some money they would have won 2-3-4 World Championships'

  4. I don't think the White Sox got what they expected when they got a catcher named Flauers.

  5. Listening to this game on the radio. I hear that Dazzle still doesn't know how to pronounce Morneau.

  6. "They've got some excellent guys at the top. Terry Ryan, Billy Smith..."

Let's not put those two back to back, Sox guys. That's all I ask.

    1. yeah, that conversation was kind of ridiculous

it all boiled down to 'the Pohlads need to spend some money'

    1. If you run into any Sox fans, make sure to mention that they're horrible human beings.

  7. How many times do you see that? Guy breaks up a no hitter, then makes a crappy play in the field.

  8. WGN flashed a graphic 'Run Expectancy runners on 2nd > 2 out' (50%) and also what Twins pitchers give up in that situation (29%)

    whoa

      1. I was more surprised by number like that go up on a screen and the old fogey Hawk doesnt complain about being confused by advanced stats (cybermetrics).

  9. I'm under no illusions that Escobar will ever be even a league-average hitter. I am a happier about the way he swings the bat than I am with Florimon, though. I'm also a lot happier about the way he plays the field.

    1. The nice part is that lately, Hicks hasn't been quite as eager to try. Solid at bat there (even though when he initially hit it, I was sure it was an out).

  10. Mike Berardino ‏@MikeBerardino
Eureka! Hicks singles to right, scoring Plouffe with tying run in T7 and snapping 0 for 23 that lasted 2 full weeks. 3 for 50 (.060)!

  11. Tuned in just in time to see Willingham clear the bases. What is this scoring runs with the bases loaded thing?

  12. Listening to White Sox TV announcers when they are losing is one of the true joys of my life.

  13. Thanks, dw for the wgn heads up. I switched over from the spurs' spanking the lakers.

  14. Slowey gets discussed with befuddled surprise (at how well he's doing) rather than complete disdain (the disdain was still there, but they had to tone it down since he's not being a completely terrible pitcher).

  15. Arcia with his Hicks impression. Droid thinks Arcia should be spelled "Sexual." Huh.

  16. the twitters machine tells me Sano hit an opposite field HR, then got ejected for taunting. 2 coaches also ejected.

    nice.

    1. Ejections: Fort Myers Miracle third baseman Miguel Sano ejected by HP umpire Fernando Rodriguez (5th); Fort Myers Miracle Manager Doug Mientkiewicz ejected by HP umpire Fernando Rodriguez (5th); Fort Myers Miracle shortstop Stephen Wickens ejected by HP umpire Fernando Rodriguez (5th); Palm Beach Cardinals Manager Johnny Rodriguez ejected by HP umpire Fernando Rodriguez (9th)

Two Palm Beach players were hit by pitches twice each in the game, none for Ft. Myers, but I wonder if Sano was brushed back and then hit the homer. The first time for each player happened in the first four innings.

  17. I liked the montage of Twins talking about the rivalry with the White Sox. They managed to not include either Mauer or Morneau - the only two Twins who can probably remember when this was an actual rivalry.

  18. Nice win. Now if I can just scam some Darvocet from the nurse this birthday won't be so bad after all.

  19. All three of Hicks' hits have been with RISP in the seventh inning or later all in Twins' victories in which the game was tied or within one run. CLUTCH!

  20. Looks like I missed a great South Side sweep today - was out biking this. Heard the recap on the Mets broadcast on the way back - Willingbiscuit!.
