Game 23: A Pelfrey-less Tuesday

This is my first ever game log without the starting pitcher being Mike Pelfrey who single handedly made the Marlins look like a competent offense last week.

Of course, my first Pelf-less night comes with a Verlander start.

Game 23:
Vance Worley (0-3, 6.38 ERA) vs. Justin Verlander (2-2, 1.95 ERA)

I was able to watch Worley's last start thanks to the magic of a national broadcast, and I feel less concerned about his early struggles compared to Pelfrey's. That said, I'm still not expecting much overall from this game. A good Worley start will probably go un-rewarded unless the Twins can be patient tonight and drive Verlander's pitch count up to get to the soft underbelly of the Tigers bullpen. Fortunately, the Twins have recent history on their side as they've already lost the first game of a Tigers series, just like last time!

Prediction: Hicks hits his frist home run off of Verlander as revenge for making him look terrible in the first game of the season.

    1. Hicks could should be a defensive replacement at some point- hopefully Verlander has already been knocked out of the game by then, though.

    2. That does put a wrinkle in my prediction. Let's see what else I can be wrong about tonight!

    1. Listening to the Twins batters talk about Verlander, they sounded beaten before they took the field. Given the team Gardy put out there, I wonder if he was thinking that we aren't going to win this one anyway, so we might as well give a couple guys a day off and see what Ramirez looks like in center and what Escobar looks like at second.

  1. Consuela looked like he swung through some pretty hittable fastballs in that AB.

  2. Dick just Gordo'd a flyball that was caught about 40 feet in front of the fence.

  3. ooh oohhh

Could be a big story brewing here. Niklas Backstrom left the ice during warmups #mnwild

  4. I am happy to see Marco Scandella recalled for the playoffs. He's inconsistent, but I think his ceiling is much higher than Falk's (or retreads like Brett Clark).

  5. Last weekend's Half Marathon in Cheshire had police w/ dogs sniffing around the beginning of the race. A new standard?

    1. Could just be perception, but in the games I watched this weekend Joe looked like he scalded the ball but just couldn't get anything to fall.

His LD% is 26% so far this year, 5% above his career. His BABIP is .333, 12 points below his career BABIP of .345. K% is up and BB% is down. Pretty weird year so far for the overpaid sissy.

  6. Good news, guys! I got news today that this paper was accepted into Graphs and Combinatorics. I don't really recommend reading it--it's sort of a mess of notation. The ideas in the paper are much simpler to understand than reading the paper itself. I'm even having a hard time remembering what we did!

    1. Nice.

I had a math professor at UMD who had done some work on tiling the plane in 4 colors (can you do it). I never got his Erdos number tho.

      Congrats BTW!

            1. Whilst in college, met Matiyasevich at a conference in Thunder Bay. He solved Hilbert's 10th problem (a Diophantine equation). I had taken some Russian but the dialogue was limited.

      1. It's about sub-hypercubes of sub-hypercubes of a hypercube! Does that clear things up?

        1. Well, of course, it is. Anyone can see that. I meant I didn't understand all the technical details.

          1. I'm actually taking some time to figure out the technical details, too! Even though I wrote it!

Much of the stuff in this paper is a generalization of works of other mathematicians. Some of those proofs were hard and required some study to understand, so now I have to re-figure out what the point of these things were.

    1. Yeah, I will be spending all summer trying to think up excuses for avoiding my 10-year HS reunion in October.

      1. You should have planned ahead earlier by making sure no one would think to invite you ten years down the road. That's what I did and it worked like a charm.

        1. I thought I had done that effectively, but somehow I got to be facebook friends with people who are friends with the people who are apparently organizing the whole deal. Joining facebook was obviously my first mistake.

        1. I just ignored the invitation to mine a few years ago. Telling them to piss off probably would have been more satisfying.

        1. Thirty-six for me. My school was so small they don't have class reunions, they just have all-school reunions every five years. The next one will be in 2015. I'm already making plans not to go.

          1. heh.

As I think I mentioned, my 30th was two years ago. First one I had been to, and it was a lot of fun.

  7. I bought a keyboard yesterday, and taught myself this in a few hours. It's not perfect, but I'm very proud of myself so far. I've always struggled with music.

This seems like the right time to share.

  8. So I'm sitting here supposedly watching a pre-Annual Conference briefing on the computer. The audio was out for the first fifteen minutes, and the stream freezes up about every thirty seconds. Apparently, our conference is not particularly technologically advanced.

  9. Anyone else see Encarnacion's homer for TOR yet? I feel like you should get an extra run or something for hitting it up there.

    1. Winning pitcher was Todd Van Poppel. There's someone I haven't thought about for a while.

  10. now this is a hockey game. still though, can they get it out of their zone for more than 20 seconds please? my heart can't take it...

    1. I hope that the Wild decide that this shows they can play with and take it to Chicago. There is always the chance that this was their best effort, but it would be a shame to peak this early in the post-season.

      1. I wonder how different the outcome would have been is Pominville is playing instead of being out with a concussion

    2. That's the only way the Wild will have a chance in this series is to play games like tonight. Perfectly executed except for getting the second goal.

      1. it should be noted that harding had an amazing game off the bench (and, in conjunction with that, suter earned his paycheck this game).

  11. The Wild will have to settle for winning in five games! And the Twins will have to settle for 150-12!
