Friday Music Day: May 3, 2013

May already? I've wasted March and April/This Spring/This Year/My Life.
Oh hey, as the Hitman pointed out to me, there's a New Colin Stetson album out! New History Warfare Vol. 3: To See More Light. Four tracks have Justin Vernon of Bon Iver singing on them and so far I haven't liked that much on passing listens, but I did closely listen to the subtitle track and it is absolutely fantastic, a 15-minute epic with all of the comparisons to Beowulf and Gilgamesh and Faith No More that description entails.

What does your music playing device or service serve up for you today?

  5. Dang, forgot my I-pod today. I'll do one of these later I hope. Also Andrew, I've been really digging the new Yeah Yeah Yeah album.

  6. OK, I've still got my iPod on shuffle and an instrumental droney noisey song I didn't recognize came up and I thought "This is great! Locust? Aaron Dilloway?" iPod says "Cherry on Top" by The Knife, from Shaking the Habitual. Well done, Dreijers!

    1. Well that goes for the first movement. Then it became out-of-tune harpsichord with vox and I'm not so much into it.

  7. I've been exploring the "newer" music of Italian prog band PFM (Premiata Forneria Marconi*) and liked this track

*they took their name from the bakery that they practiced above; interestingly Google Translate gives the translation of their name as "PFM" in English

*** Dessa is releasing a new album this summer

    1. I own exactly one of these songs on CD: Boogie Down Productions.
The live album format disappointed me, in pretty much the same way that many future hip-hop shows would.

    2. Dessa is releasing a new album this summer

I like the new song. She debuted another song at the show I was at in March, and it sounded... different. I'm always excited for new Dessa material, though.

    1. I lost the second half of Mermaid Ave Vol. II when my computer crashed. I really should get around to recovering/reacquiring that.

    2. WOYIAMK is my second favorite from that album behind "California Stars"

      1. Tough for me to argue choose a favorite, I love "Eisler On The Go" and "Ingrid Bergman" as well.

Demdike Stare is at it again, releasing short EPs that will eventually be collected into what I can only assume will be a quintuple album containing 8 hours of really spooky techno.

    Testpressing#001

    Testpressing#002

While I'm talking techno, I thought both this remix by Lucy, and the original by Eomac were pretty good.

    Eomac - Spoock (Lucy remix)

Eomac - Spoock. The track takes a while to warm up, but it gets good, I promise.

    1. I'll have to check out the Testpressing stuff, as I've been into Demdike quite a bit lately.

I heard 'The Weight of Culture' by Demdike Stare (they're releasing a lot of new music this year) a few weeks ago. It's a 40+ minute mixtape type thing with a lot of their spooky dark ambient with weird almost poppy electro mixed in occasionally. I'd say it's jarring, but it's more akin to the world's creepiest radio station floating in and out of signal. Come to think of it, that sounds like a good idea for an actual album - does anyone know if it's been done before?

Speaking of creepy, Excavations by The Haxan Cloak scratches that itch pretty solidly. It's ultradark ambient with almost industrial sounding undertones. Linds heard it, said it sounded like if the Saw soundtrack went off the deep end, and left the room saying I had the worst taste in music ever.

      1. Listened to the first half of Excavations. This is something I will keep. I won't be playing it for the wife anytime soon, on your advice.

  11. Grimes fans and others:
I was cleaning out my emails and came across my note to myself to check Brainwashed's 2012 Readers Poll.
I did today and came across a link to this Star Tribune article, but without any context. The woman's name, age, and province of origin all match Grimes. So that's gotta be her, eh?

  12. If anyone else is watching The Sundance Channel's Rectify, you were probably wondering who played that gloriously loud and messy tune that closed the second episode. It was these guys.

    1. Off the awesomely titled album "Wait Long By the River and the Bodies of Your Enemies Will Float By"

Thanks for this E-6, I wasn't wondering, but I guess I should have been.

      1. Are you watching the show, or were you just familiar with the band? So far it's rather slow-paced, but I kinda like that. And somebody has some excellent musical taste, as Bon Iver and Sharon Van Etten songs were expertly used in the pilot. (Incidentally, I bought The Drones record yesterday, and listened to it back to back last night. I may have to find more of their stuff.)

    1. Nice - also, enjoyed your banter yesterday/last night. Couple things: 1. No apology is necessary...ever, and 2. I miss having JI JIM on the team as we don't see much of Mona Lisa around here any more and that's a damn shame.

  13. 1. "You Cheated Me" - Martha Wainwright
    2. "Fake Palindromes" - Andrew Bird
    3. "Zero" - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
    4. "On The Radio" - Regina Spektor

    9. "I Am A Man Of Constant Sorrow" - Soggy Bottom Boys*
    10. "Stairway To Heaven" - Led Zepplin
B: "Sweet Child Of Mine" - Guns 'n' Roses

    *Not a real band.

      1. I just came out Tuesday and I really haven't had time to check it out. I did pick up the e.p. earlier this month that was recorded about the same time and was a little disappointed. I'm guessing there will be some amazing songs and some clunkers. That's pretty much par for the course. I could make one amazing album out of the three GBV released in 2012.
