May 3, 2013: Prioritizing

If I'm going to try to sleep, why does Netflix have to have Battle Royale sitting there, just begging me to see it again despite its clear flaws? Oh well.

  1. the Royals were snowed out yesterday. I dont see dozens of articles saying that the Royals should have built a roof on the stadium or why are they playing baseball in a place that can get bad weather when they should have been playing in the dome at Tampa.

  2. I'm not seeing the search box at the top of the page any more. Did something happen to it, or am I just not seeing well?

    1. Top-right, I have a magnifying glass. Click that and the search space opens up.

    2. Yep, I removed it along with the entire block above the header image. I wasn't sure if anyone was using it, but it would be simple to add it back. However, it would be toward/at the bottom of the page instead.

      1. Now that AMR showed me how to find it, there's no need to add it back on my account.

            1. I talked with my folks this morning. Still ~30 inches of ice on their lake, and grampaS says he has to wear his snowshoes to take the garbage out or pick up the mail. Yikes.

        1. Three months of the best weather in the world started early this year.

          1. I'll tell you what, if I had the money to winter elsewhere, I'd consider doing summers here. This is damn near perfect.

  3. While I'm happy that the Warriors have moved on to the second round, I have to say that I'm bummed that it was at the expense of the Nuggets.

          1. I don't know what Kobe has given his mother in the past, but my guess is that he's gonna end up settling with her, giving her a bunch of cash in exchange for his mementos.

As I've said before, I've softened on Kobe a little. That doesn't mean I like him, but I'm a little closer to neutral* than I was before.

            *The whole Colorado thing notwithstanding.

            1. The Colorado thing was...something. Everyone seemingly had a strong feeling on Kobe's innocence or guilt, which conveniently had everything to do with how much they liked him as a baller. I did think it was telling, though, that the girl's friends came forward and said that it wasn't the first time she had consensual sex and then accused the man of raping her.

A girl I know from college made that same claim after consensual sex and essentially ruined the life of one of my close friends and nearly drove him to suicide. Years later she came forward and told us all that she felt so stupid about what she'd done that she concocted the entire story. It was tough to be moved by her admission years after she'd done irreparable damage to both her friendships and his (and, most importantly, the friendship they had with one another).

This is way off the rails now, but the situation I know colors the way I view Kobe's situation. I can all too easily believe either scenario, which sort of makes me disgusted with the world.

              1. I have spoken with some criminal defense attorneys who told me (paraphrasing): "Give me a domestic assault or a sexual assault over a DWI any day of the week because there are always two sides to those cases."

Also, spooky, if you have not read Atonement I suggest you run to the nearest library right now. Easily one of my favorite books of all time.

                1. The movie was good (actually, really good as a book adaption), but the book was just HOLY COWS amazingly good. McEwan just wowed me as a writer by shifting into the middle section of that book (which is probably the best, most visceral passage I've ever read about being at the front lines) after telling the story of that day at the estate. I've convinced numerous other people to read it, and every single one has thanked me afterwards.

                  1. I've heard fantastic things about the writing. I just was so angry at the plot and resolution that it blocked out everything good about the movie.

                    1. But you have to agree that, to get a reaction that strong, the material was incredibly good.

                    2. Eh. Not really. That's part of what got to me.

                    3. Ok fine, but you would have given it a gold if Margaret wrote it!

                    4. It inflamed my sense of injustice. That's 50% of what it was going for, so I'll give it credit for that. But the other 50% - the name of the game, so to speak - wasn't accomplished. But it is entirely possible I'd feel differently about the book than the movie.

    1. I'm with all that - it's been fun to see the Nuggets improve without Carmelo as a drag on the defense. I really like Steph Curry, though.

    1. "Psych" is alright I guess.

More relevant to "Psych" - I've always thought Spurs'* manager AVB looked a bit like Shawn Spencer (James Roday)

*That's Tottenham Hotspur, not San Antonio.

      1. I knew it, I was just waiting (and waiting, and waiting) for the pictures.

  4. 50 years ago today... Bull Connor unleashed the dogs and turned on the hoses.

    1. Willingham was a catcher? I think you have him confused with Doumit.

Looks it up... Willingham did catch 15 games in the majors. Huh.

      1. He caught 180 games in the minors, and it was his primary position from 2003-2005.

    2. So far, he gets 1.11 ground balls to every fly ball and the AL average is .77.

That seems a rather confusing way to say he has a ~51% groundball rate. Actually, confusing and possibly misleading. Are line drives included in the denominator? I would guess no (they aren't fly balls), meaning the most important type of ball in play is being excluded. That said, it is strangely difficult to get an actual percentage for minor league players for some reason, despite the component numbers being widely available.

      1. Yes, line drives are included as flyballs. All these stats are taken straight from B-Ref and presented how they do it.

      2. it is strangely difficult to get an actual percentage for minor league players for some reason, despite the component numbers being widely available.

I got Gibson's groundball ratio from his page on the MiLB website.

        1. B-R has the numbers for each component for each game, but when you sum them up, it gives the GB/FB ratio, which isn't as useful. Plus, as already mentioned, the ratio other sites give isn't very intuitive. Everywhere else in baseball it's a percentage of some sort. The groundball percentage stabilizes quickly enough, but only FG reports it. Hence, strangely difficult (and a source of irritation for me).

        1. Yeah, I had exactly 51% from FanGraphs, but the ratio came out differently. Classifying balls is difficult and every method in use has known issues, so I quickly edited it to be about 51%. Eventually the sample size will increase enough such that different recording methods will be closer.

  5. My mother updated her Book of F page on February 14th with the following:

OK up to now I have been okay with winter but the weather has been pretty bad lately and I hope it shapes up soon

  6. I cant believe the high school softball team is going ahead with their game today. Spent the last couple of hours grooming the field and I could see my breath and its about a 20 mph wind from the North Pole.
I am guessing since they have missed so many games already, if it aint raining they are playing.

      1. the field is in perfect condition. Didnt get any snow/rain the other day (missed by about 30 miles to the east), and just about everyday we've been out with the drag. Its just buttass cold.

  7. NBA Players with four or more MVPs:

    1. Kareem
    2. Jordan
    3. Wilt
    4. Russell

On Sunday, LBJ joins that list. He's an all-timer.

    1. I recall reading that James should have four straight now and the prior offseason might have helped Rose win.

      1. LBJ has been the PER leader six straight seasons. He's been the Win Shares leader for five straight.

  8. Bustered! Posey with a solo donger leading off the bottom of the 9th to beat the Dodgers, on a full count.

Punto got rung up in the top of the inning on a backdoor slider. And almost thrown out for arguing.
