Minor Details: Games of June 25

A good day of rehab for Aaron Hicks wasn't enough.  Max Kepler wins it for Cedar Rapids.  We're almost caught up now.

INDIANAPOLIS 5, ROCHESTER 3 IN INDIANAPOLIS

Batting stars:  Aaron Hicks, on the first day of a rehab assignment, was 3-for-4 with an RBI.  Jeff Clement was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer, his twelfth.

Pitching star:  Cody Eppley pitched a perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  Kris Johnson pitched seven innings, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks.  Lucas May was 2-for-4 and scored once.  Andrew Lambo was 1-for-3 with a walk and a two-run homer.

Key inning:  The sixth.  The Indians led 3-0.  With one out, May singled and Chase D'Arnaud hit a two-run homer to put the game out of reach.

Prospect watch:  Logan Darnell, making his AAA debut, pitched 2.2 innings before leaving with a blister.  He gave up one run on two hits and three walks while striking out two.

NEW BRITAIN AT ALTOONA

The game was suspended in the second inning with New Britain leading 3-0 on a three-run homer by Curt Smith.

PALM BEACH 5, FORT MYERS 4 IN PALM BEACH

Batting stars:  Mike Kvasnicka was 2-for-3 with a walk and a two-run homer, his third.  Jhon Goncalves was 1-for-3 with a walk and a double and scored once.

Pitching stars:  Ryan O'Rourke pitched three shutout innings, giving up three hits and a walk.  Jose Gonzalez struck out one in a perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  Anthony Garcia was 3-for-4 with a double and a homer.  David Popkins was 3-for-4 with two doubles and scored once.  Travis Miller struck out three in two shutout innings, allowing a hit and a walk.

Key inning:  The ninth.  The Miracle trailed 5-4.  Kvasnicka led off with a single and was replaced by Candido Pimentel.  A bunt moved the tying run to second and a passed ball put him on third with one out.  Jonathan Murphy and Byron Buxton each grounded out to end the game.

Prospect watch:  Buxton, in his high-A debut, was 1-for-5 with an RBI.  Aderlin Mejia was 0-for-3 with an RBI.  Kennys Vargas was 1-for-4.

CEDAR RAPIDS 6, BURLINGTON 4 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Batting stars:  Max Kepler was 2-for-4 with a double and a two-run homer (his first), scoring twice.  J. D. Williams was 1-for-2 with a walk and scored once.

Pitching star:  Kaleb Merck retired all seven batters he faced, striking out three of them.

Opposition stars:  Brandon Love pitched five shutout innings of relief, allowing one hit and one walk.  Andrew Ray was 2-for-4 with a triple and a home run, driving in three.

Key inning:  The seventh.  The Kernels trailed 4-0.  Kepler led off with a double, but had only advanced to third with two out.  Michael Quesada had an RBI single, followed by two walks that loaded the bases.  Jorge Polanco unloaded them with a three-run triple to tie the score.  Cedar Rapids got two more in the eighth on a Kepler homer to win the game.

Prospect watch:  Dalton Hicks was 1-for-4 with a double.

ELIZABETHTON 8, GREENEVILLE 4 IN GREENEVILLE

Batting stars:  Rory Rhodes was 3-for-5 with a double, scoring twice and driving in one.  Mitch Garver was 2-for-5 with a double and a triple, scoring once and driving in one.  Zach Granite was 2-for-3 with a walk and a triple, scoring twice and driving in one.

Pitching star:  Tanner Mendonca struck out three in three shutout innings, giving up two hits and three walks.

Opposition stars:  Edwin Gomez was 2-for-4 with a triple and a home run, scoring twice and driving in three.  Ricky Gingras was 2-for-4 with a double and scored once.

Key inning:  The seventh.  The Twins led 3-2.  A walk, a single, and a wild pitch put runners on second and third with one out.  Romy Jimenez singled in one run, an error produced another, and a Javier Pimentel single brought in a third to give Elizabethton a 6-2 lead.

GCL TWINS 6, GCL RAYS 5 AT GCL TWINS

Batting stars:  Joel Polanco was 2-for-4 with a triple, scoring once and driving in two.  Will Hurt was 2-for-2 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Chad Christensen was 2-for-5 and scored once.

Pitching star:  Jose Abreu pitched 2.2 scoreless innings, giving up one hit and one walk.

Opposition stars:  Starter Freddy Alvarez struck out four in three shutout innings, allowing no hits and two walks.  Hector Montes was 2-for-3 with a walk and scored twice.  Jose Paez was 2-for-5 with a triple, scoring once and driving in three.

Key inning:  The eighth.  With the score tied at four, Jorge Fernandez hit a home run to give the Twins the lead.  Polanco singled, was bunted to second, went to third on a Jonatan Hinojosa single, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Adonis Pacheco.

Prospect watch:  Amaurys Minier was 1-for-5 and scored once.

DSL WHITE SOX 4, TWINS 1 AT TWINS

Batting star:  Carlos Martinez was 1-for-3 with a triple and a walk and scored once.

Pitching stars:  Alexis Tapia pitched 4.1 scoreless innings, giving up two hits and no walks.  Robener Cabrera pitched a scoreless inning, giving up only a hit batsman.

Opposition stars:  Jhoan Quijada pitched five shutout innings, allowing two hits and two walks.  Jaider Rocha struck out three in three shutout innings, allowing no hits and three walks.  Roger Ramos was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.

Key inning:  The first.  Johan Cruz singled, went to second on a ground out, and scored on a Robert Del Rosario single.  The White Sox scored single runs in each of the first four innings.

  2. Since Kepler was the star of the game, I'm supposing that is why he isn't listed in the prospect watch. I hope that you will keep an eye on him for us otherwise.

    1. Correct. If someone is listed as one of the "stars" he's not listed again in prospect watch. Which, of course, means that if you're listed in prospect watch, you probably didn't have that great a game, although you may have done all right and just been overshadowed. One of the things that makes doing this more fun this year is that, at almost every level, we've actually got a couple of prospects worth watching.
