Friday Music Day: June 28, 2013

I made some music comments this week. To summarize:
Daft Punk album: Joy-Destroying
Scout Niblett's cover of "No Scrubs": Opinion contaminated by Daft Punk
Yeezus: Palate-Cleansing
Scout Niblett's cover of "Uptown Top Ranking": Great.
Miley Cyrus single: awful, but I can get past it.

More thoughts:
Scout Niblett's got some greatness in her, and some stretches on her albums that absolutely get lost and have nowhere to go. (Oddly reminds me of Regina Spektor, who she sounds nothing like.) So far, I've mostly needed a hook to get into her songs, like if it's a cover (two listed above, plus a take on Palace [Will Oldham]'s "Trudy Dies"), or a Will Oldham duet ("Kiss")

Yeezus: I don't really think this entirely works, especially lyrically. (Not only is there little coherence within the album, but single tracks are all over the place, except for anger. Which makes it feel more genuine.) I'm glad there's someone with big pop success who's willing to take big artistic risks like these. I betcha Alec Empire (Atari Teenage Riot) and Kevin Martin ("The Bug", "Techno Animal") are kicking themselves for not getting involved with this album. The beat for "Black Skinhead" is pretty fantastic; it's got the swing from "Gold Digger", the drums from "Love Lockdown". And if Miss Cyrus is singing (autotuning) "We like to party / dancin' with Miley" in her single, then Mr. West could be singing (autotuning) "When we tried our first Miley / and came out of our body". I could listen to this album a lot.

You can download Aaron Dilloway's Siena for free. Or just listen. I believe this is what the kids are calling "Noise". It'll probably be on a best-of-the-year list for me in about six months.

Some random tracks I listened to that appeal a lot to me:
Mikal Cronin "Shout it out"
Disclosure "When a Fire Starts to Burn" (Hadn't looked at the video before, ignore it.)

And two old songs that are great, just because:
Mylo "Need You Tonite" (feat. a Judie Tzuke sample)
Camp Lo "Luchini AKA This Is It"

    1. "Live at Budokan" was at my record store in DSM once for like $4 and I thought, "I'll come back for that tomorrow" because I didn't have any cash on me, but it was gone. I was a bit disappointed

      1. The original Live at Budokan was only a few songs from the actual show and not necessarily in the correct playing order (which is pretty common for "live" albums). Sometime in the 90's Cheap Trick released Live at Budokan II which included other songs from the show. (subsequently they released a CD with the whole show on a double disc).

What's really cool is that through the power of teh interwebz one can find the actual set list for the Budokan concert. Since I had Live at Budokan and Live II, I have been able to reconstruct the actual playing order of the show on my I-pod. I still call it Live at Budokan but it's quite different than that version you saw for $4 in DSM.

*A Chicago Hip-hop group from the late 90's that should not be forgotten, even if they only had the one album (well, they had a cassette-only album, which I do have as well). Their producers, the Opus, are still recording. Here's a better song than the one from my list.

Bonus Video because I found their new album at Best Buy last night for just $8 (Best Buy removing cd's from their stores looks to be a good thing for cheap guys like me):

    httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOwD6vs5g-k

      1. I can't confirm, but they completely removed all traces of the cd racks from my local store and it looked like they were moving that way with both CDs and DVDs in the store I was at last night. So based on that sample size, yes, they are doing that at all stores.

        1. On the bright side, people like you and me can lecture those damn kids on how great cds sound compared to digital and how they aren't real music fans unless they have a collection of "polycarbonates".

  9. I just listened to R.A.P. Music for the first time this past week. Good Lord, that's a good album.

I also went out and bought the new Sigur Ros CD. That is also an extremely good album. Everyone's talking about how much darker it is than their previous stuff, but that's only really true of about half the songs (particularly the opener 'Brennisteinn'). It's a talking point, but a better one would be how the drums are back. Rejoice! Sigur Ros is a percussive band again!

    * I'm not sure I even like this song. I know I don't like certain parts of it, I know I do like the bass line and the "Hold on, I'm calling" parts. I also know I like the cover.

    * ...??

    1. I guess that ten random-ones lists counts as well, but no extra points for degree of difficulty.

      1. Haha, I always do up the first entry, then copy/paste it ten times so that I don't have to keep bolding and italicizing. Usually, I remember to change the numbers.

    2. I just listened to R.A.P. Music for the first time this past week. Good Lord, that’s a good album.

Oh heck yes. I played this for my friend the first time last weekend on our daytrip to Minneapolis. I'm really fond of I Pledge Allegiance to the Grind II and Pl3dge, though they're not as good as R.A.P.. Still, "God in the Building" is probably the best thing Mike's ever done. What a song.

        1. I haven't had time yet, unfortunately. I downloaded Tuesday but I've been bombarded with crap to deal with since. I'm hoping to check it out tonight or tomorrow while I'm doing homework.

  12. No list today; the soundtrack of the moment is Grunty Baby Noises. But I do want to share an interview with Dessa by other Doomtree members. My favorite question is:

Q: At what age did you realize you were the most serious person in the room?

      1. Yes--Parts of Speech, which came out on Tuesday. I haven't heard anything from it yet, but I hope to rectify that situation soon.
