Minor Details: Games of 8/9

Two position players are the best pitchers for Rochester.  Kennys Vargas and Taylor Rogers lead Fort Myers to victory.  A pair of relievers make starts at the lower levels.

NORFOLK 11, ROCHESTER 2 IN NORFOLK

Batting stars:  Eric Fryer was 1-for-2 with a walk.  Deibinson Romero was 0-for-1 with three walks and scored once.

Pitching stars:  Jermaine Mitchell pitched two shutout innings, giving up no hits and one walk.  Brian Dinkelman pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Tim Alderson pitched three shutout innings, giving up one hit and no walks with one strikeout.  Xavier Avery was 3-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in three.  Chris Dickerson was 3-for-5, scoring twice and driving in one.

Key inning:  The first.  Rochester got on the board when Darin Mastroianni walked, stole second, and scored on a pair of ground outs.  In the bottom of the inning, the Tides struck for five.  Ex-Twin Jason Pridie hit an RBI single, Eric Thames hit a two-run double, and Avery had a two-run single.

Prospect watch:  Mastroianni was 0-for-3 with a walk and scored once.  Eduardo Escobar was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Chris Parmelee was 0-for-3 with an RBI.  Josmil Pinto was 0-for-2 with an RBI.  Aaron Hicks was 1-for-4.  P. J. Walters started and pitched two innings, giving up seven runs on nine hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

READING 6, NEW BRITAIN 5 IN READING

Batting stars:  Miguel Sano was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Jordan Parraz was 2-for-4.

Pitching stars:  Daniel Turpen struck out two in 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up no runs and no hits.  Blake Martin pitched a perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  Anthony Hewitt was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.  Jim Murphy was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Key inning:  The eighth.  The Rock Cats trailed 6-3.  Eddie Rosario led off with a double.  That was followed by strikeouts by Wilkin Ramirez and Sano, with the Ramirez strikeout resulting in ejections to both Ramirez and manager Jeff Smith.  Daniel Ortiz hit an RBI single to make it 6-4.  Nate Hanson walked and Reynaldo Rodriguez singled to make it 6-5 with the tying run on second, but Parraz grounded out to end the threat.

Prospect watch:  Rosario was 1-for-4 with a walk and a double, scoring twice.  Ramirez was 0-for-4.

FORT MYERS 7, CHARLOTTE 3 IN FORT MYERS

Batting stars:  Kennys Vargas was 4-for-5 with two runs and four RBIs.  Matt Koch was 3-for-5 with a double.

Pitching star:  Taylor Rogers struck out seven in 6.1 innings, giving up one run on four hits and three walks.

Opposition stars:  Hector Guevara was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.  Jonathan Quinonez was 2-for-4.

Key inning:  The third.  The Miracle led 1-0.  Byron Buxton singled and stole second.  Dalton Hicks walked.  Vargas singled in a run and another run scored on an infield out to make it 3-0.

Prospect watch:  Buxton was 1-for-5 with a run scored.  Hicks was 0-for-3 with two walks.  Mike Kvasnicka was 0-for-3 with an RBI.  Aderlin Mejia was 1-for-4.

CEDAR RAPIDS 7, BELOIT 4 IN BELOIT

Batting stars:  Max Kepler was 2-for-4 with a hit-by-pitch and a two-run homer (his sixth), scoring three times.  Adam Brett Walker II was 2-for-5 with a two-run homer, his twenty-fifth.  Travis Harrison was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.

Pitching stars:  Mason Melotakis struck out two in 2.1 scoreless innings of relief, giving up one hit and one walk.  Dallas Gallant struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up one hit and no walks.  Madison Boer pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Ryan Mathews was 2-for-4 with two doubles.  Ryan Delgado was 2-for-3 with a walk, a double, and an RBI.  Sam Roberts was 2-for-4 and scored once.

Key inning:  The seventh.  The Kernels led 3-2.  Kepler was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Walker II followed with a two-run homer to make the score 5-2.

Prospect watch:  Tim Shibuya started for the first time all season, pitching two shutout innings before tiring in the third.  For the game, he gave up two runs on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts in 2.2 innings.

BURLINGTON 4, ELIZABETHTON 3 IN BURLINGTON

Batting stars:  Logan Wade was 2-for-3 with a walk and scored once.  Zach Granite was 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI.

Pitching star:  Ethan Mildren pitched a perfect inning.

Opposition star:  Chris Sweeney was 1-for-2 with a walk and a home run, scoring twice.

Key inning:  The seventh.  The score was tied at three.  Sweeney walked, Kevin Kuntz was hit by a pitch, a bunt moved both runners into scoring position, and a fielder's choice brought home the go-ahead run.

Prospect watch:  Zach Larson, making his Appalachian League debut, was 0-for-2 with a walk and a hit-by-pitch and scored once.  Kuo Hua Lo made his first start of the year and pitched four innings, giving up two runs on three hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

GCL RED SOX 3, GCL TWINS 2 AT TWINS

Batting stars:  Chad Christensen was 2-for-4 with a double.  Rick Schwarz was 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI.

Pitching stars:  Kohl Stewart struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up no hits and one walk.  Brandon Easton pitched as scoreless inning, giving up no hits and one walk.  Miguel Gonzalez struck out all three batters he faced.

Opposition stars:  Randy Perez pitched 5.1 scoreless innings of relief, allowing three hits and one walk with two strikeouts.  Wendell Rijo was 2-for-4 with a double and scored once.  Aneudis Peralta was 2-for-4 and scored once.

Key inning:  The third.  The Red Sox trailed 2-1.  Rijo opened the inning with a double, went to third on a single by Peralta, and scored on a single by Mike Myers to tie the game.  With two out, Nick Longhi singled to score the go-ahead run.

Prospect watch:  Amaurys Minier was 1-for-4.  Alex Meyer, on a rehab assignment, started and struck out five in 1.2 innings, giving up one run on three hits and a walk.

DSL TWINS AT DSL GIANTS

The Giants were leading 4-2 when the game was suspended with two out in the bottom of the fourth.  So far, the teams have combined for five hits and twelve walks, with Twins pitchers issuing eight of the walks.

    1. Too bad there were no reached-base on strikeouts. Gotta go for that ultra-rare K/9 over 30!
